Army Forces Capmbell to Give Up Football

DETROIT (AP) -- Caleb Campbell will not get a chance to play for the Detroit Lions because of a change in military policy.
Campbell was a seventh-round draft pick for the Lions in April. At the time, Army policy would have allowed the West Point graduate to serve as a recruiter if he made the team.
But a subsequent Department of Defense policy has superseded the 2005 Army policy.
In a letter to Lions president Matt Millen dated Wednesday, U.S. Army Lt. Col. Jonathan P. Liba wrote that Campbell has been ordered to give up professional football for "full-time traditional military duties."
Liba wrote that 2nd Lt. Campbell may ask to be released from his active duty obligations in May 2010.
Liba said Campbell was allowed to enter the draft "in good faith."
Ok I see why this should affect new Grads, but this just doesn't seem fair.

Thumbs down Re: Army Forces Capmbell to Give Up Football

Yeah, there's definitely some BS going on here with the Army changing rules on the fly like that. Why let Caleb Campbell become elgible for the draft in the first place if doing so would exploit a loophole in the policy that needed to be addressed? But to keep things in perspective, Campbell is 7th round pick who wasn't guaranteed to make the roster. However, the Lions wanted to try him at strongside linebacker which is a really thin position on the team right now as far as depth is concerned, so who knows.

Did he have to make the 53 man roster, or would a practice squad job have kept him around? Not that it matters now, this kid is getting screwed. He should try to fight this in Court.

Being a practice squad player would've kept Campbell around, but he actually had a good shot of making the final roster as a backup SLB here.

What's strange is that Roger Goodell found it appropriate to intervene in the Brett Favre situation, yet hasn't made a peep about what's going on here. What is his stance on this one?

That's because he has bigger issues to worry about such as making sure the Peace sign you make with your fingers isn't a sign for "Whaddup Blood" and making sure Current NFL players don't own vineyards. He's also done a good job of making sure that former players are disabled due to their injuries they received while playing aren't taken care of.
