Re: HORRIBLE CALL(Skins/Cards)

I saw the play.

If they were calling it for hitting the player late, then I agree with you. How can it be late if the QB hasn't thrown the ball downfield yet? There were 10 more seconds of the play left.

If they called it for the hit to the head, then I get it. He did wallop him in the head. But that's not what the ref said.

Re: HORRIBLE CALL(Skins/Cards)

My guesses as to what the call was (I don't remember what the ref said it was):

A) hit to the head, which has to be called
B) one of those rarely-called instances of a player being away from the ball and not making any intention to get back into the play, i.e. Warren Sapp's hit on Chad Clifton during an interception return or something a few years back

Didn't see anything wrong with the call personally.

Re: HORRIBLE CALL(Skins/Cards)

this all started when warren sapp hit dude from green bay and dislocated like everything below dude's waist. (can't remember who dude was). anyway, the call was bs, if you watch the replay campbell was in the process of throwing and getting hit when in the background you see him hit the guy, jesus. it is a call that if the ref wanted to he could probably make on every play, much like holding...

Re: HORRIBLE CALL(Skins/Cards)

This sounds like a case where the ref has to let the players sort it out. If it's legal by the book, don't call it. Let the defender decide if he was the victim of a cheap shot and deliver his own form of justice. Stuff like this goes on all the time, particularly in the trenches. Chop blocking is legal, yet if you try launching at the knees of a DT, chances are the next down he's going to try a trick of his own.

I think it was Chad Clifton.

Either way, it was a bad call. Cardinal's coaches should be upset with their player. The QB is scrambling in a 17-17 play and he's not chasing the ball.

24-17, but your point is still valid. Still baffles me that unnecessary roughness, a penalty normally reserved for players taking shots after the whistle gets called during the middle of a play.

Also, I caught the Phins/Pats call on Sportscenter, and while I agree that wasn't a very good call either, it was consistent. Think about it, if defenders are getting flagged for hitting the QB even a half of a second after he releases the ball, then the moment he's in the grasp, he should be ruled down. Hell, they might as well just give the QB's flags and ban hitting them altogether.

Re: HORRIBLE CALL(Skins/Cards)

It was basically a reaction to the letter the Herr Goodell sent out to the teams, players and officials about protecting players from unnecessary hits and injuries. Heyer did everything right. Play to the whistle, head on a swivel He just happened to hit the guy in the head and the ref saw it and threw the flag. I agree that it wasn't the best of calls and it took 7 points off the board in a close ball game. It's just one of those things.
