Andrew Luck and fans wanting their teams to tank

I was reading an article on ESPN about how Andrew Luck is a slam dunk and fans of many teams are actually rooting against their favorite teams in order to have a chance at getting him. Article is here

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/page/...pick-nfl-draft

Now regardless of how bad your favorite team is tanking is just flat out wrong. It sends the wrong message to not only your fans, but the players on the team as well as future free agents being willing to sign into that culture. In addition, no matter how much of a "sure thing" luck appears to be, we simply do not know. Case in point...

Here is why teams should NOT tank: Jeff George, Andre Ware, Dave Klinger, Rick Mirer, Heath Shuler, Trent Dilfer, Kerry Collins, Ryan Leaf, Tim Couch, Akili Smith, David Carr, Joey Harrington, Byron Leftwich, Alex Smith, Vince Young, and Matt Leinart were all TOP TEN picks since 1990....

Moving on, Aaron Rogers, Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Shaub, Tony Romo, Matt Hasselbeck, Brett Favre, and Kurt Warner could have realistically been had by ANYONE (Rogers being the only 1st rounder at 24th overall) since 1990 including teams who were in the Playoffs or even the Super Bowl the previous year.

The whole "Suck For Luck" thing is the reason that there have been murmurs about the NFL instituting a draft lottery, a la the NBA, to curtail tanking.

There used to be a system in place to prevent teams from tanking, that being the massive amount of money one had to spend on the top pick of the draft. With slotted rookie contracts, that's gone now. It will be an interesting trend to watch, to see if there is any substance to this topic.

You can make the case that Trent Dilfer and Kerry Colins have been solid QBs unfortunately not for the teams they were drafted by (well Dilfer did have some okay years in Tampa) David Carr was in a bad situation, no matter who was drafted by the Texans they'd have suffered a similar fate but yeah...I get your point and it kinda bugs me a little especially when it comes to the Colts fans. I mean can you imagine one bad season could potentially set the Colts up for another decade plus of excellence.

The other thing is this, no matter how prepared Andrew Luck may be the amount of pressure that's going to be on this kid's shoulders is going to be off the charts. There hasn't been a rookie QB since Matt Leinart/Vince Young that has gotten this kind of crazy hype and we both know what happened to both those guys.

I've heard that Luck is the best prospect since Manning, but Manning wasn't a slam dunk #1 pick himself. A lot of people had Leaf rated higher than Manning. If Leaf and Manning were equally strong prospects, and Luck is the best prospect since Leaf or Manning, then that doesn't really tell us a whole lot.

Tanking is bull****. If any of my teams ever blatantly tanked, I would cease to be a fan.

Eh, I was going to chime in on Kerry Collins as well. I think your stretching it with Trent Dilfer....... Kerry doesn't belong on that list. I really don't like Vince Young personally but I do believe he could be a decent starter somewhere. Unfortunately for him he will never get that chance.
