Books About Football/Being a Good Coach

Are there any books out there that teach you football? Like not the basics, but how to coach? I'm planning to become a high school teacher (yes school sucked but you'll miss it very quickly) and would love to volunteer in the school's athletic clubs. Ive been a football fan all my life and I know the basics and what not; but how can I learn more? Zone Coverage vs Man Coverage, when to use which, the A, B, C, etc. gap, which hole to blitz for which situation, how to read Zone coverages as a quarterback, etc. Then books about coaching, teaching safety, teamwork, practice drills, etc. There has to be books published?

Don't know if anyone has any specific ones they like but your best bet is probably to hit Amazon.com or head to Barnes and Nobles... there should be plenty out there.

Gonna cost you some money but Bill Walsh "Finding The Winning Edge" is an amazingly insightful book in regards to coaching.

Re: Books About Football/Being a Good Coach

On coaching, not so much, but you should defiantly pick up "The Games That Changed The Game", "The Essential Smart Football". There are numerous books about the game, but these provide insight into what things work and didn't work. Coaching at the HS level it's about being creative and building a scheme to fit your talents. I coached in HS for 5 years working my way up from position coach to offensive coordinator. In those years I ran a triple option run attack, a 3 and 4 wide spread passing attack and lastly an shot-gun spread attack because your talent and players will change.

That said, you want to focus on technique more than "scheme". Build the fundamentals, with your position coaches and that will make the installing of your schemes so much easier. Be exact, if a route is suppose to be broken off at 7 yards don't accept it being done at 6 or 8, drill 7 into their heads, same things with zone drops and leverage techniques. Proper use of hands and hand placement is another big thing to stress. Drill execution into them and it will be there when the moment gets too big.

This is a great 'basics of football' book and will teach you how to watch your practices and games at least
