The Official 2020-2021 Season Talk Thread

    Season starts January 13th 2021!

Hockey is back! For some teams, it will have been 10 months since they've last played!

The Canadian (North) division will be fun. Going to be lots of hate in those games. I would expect Ottawa to miss the playoffs but any of the other teams could win the division. It will be a full meltdown in the other two Canadian cities that miss the playoffs -- and that will be half the fun.

I'd say Leafs,Oilers,Flames and Jets make it.

Wouldn't call Habs missing it a meltdown, they got lucky to even make playoffs with the expanded expanded format last season.

Canucks is a diff story though.

So I just saw the proposed season would be divisional games only, so 8 games against each team for 3 of the 4 divisions. Then the playoffs will also be divisional 1v4 & 2v3 (which I prefer but that's my late 80s/90s youth bias). If familiarity breeds contempt, there will be plenty of bad blood come playoff time.

          My guess at playoff teams:
          Leafs,Oilers,Jets,Flames for North
          Caps,Pens,Bruins,Flyers for East
          Lightning,Stars,Preds,Canes for Central
Knights,Blues,Avs for West (its anyone's guess at the 4 seed)

What are your guess at top scorers this season with the new format?
Will McDavid and Draisaitl still be favourites or will McKinnon be the favourite due to the division he is in. What do you think?
One thing is for certain though and that is that this won't be decided on even terms so to speak.

McDavid will score a natural hat trick vs the Leafs at some point in the year.

Given strength of divisions, I think MacKinnon will finish with most points.

              Matthews finishes with most goals.

What's the over/under on how many games get wiped out by COVID? I imagine playoffs will be decided on points per game. Hockey doesn't have the luxury of playing condensed (seven inning) double headers like baseball or play once a week like the NFL where you can move around the schedule.

I get that the taxi squads are there to help fill in voids created by COVID positive players that need to sit out but the amount of injuries we're going to see as a result of the quick training camps, no exhibition games, nine month layoffs for some of these teams, and ridiculously condensed 58-game schedule will be mind boggling. I know these guys are in great shape but still it's going to be a challenging environment to play in.

NHL could just schedule more back to backs if needed. We don't know what the schedule looks like yet, but I'd imagine they could have a "bye week" where any postponed games could be made up.

Or use the point percentage should teams be unable to make up games.

It's a 115 day season with 56 games there. That's a game every other day. Under extreme circumstances they probably could make a team have a 3 game in 4 day stretch. Since you're playing the same 6-7 teams, theres definitely times where you probably could do the 3 games in 4 day stretch and play the same team in 2 of those dates, maybe all 3 dates depending how many MLB styled series the NHL schedules.

                    At NHL.com:
The West already has been hailed as extraordinarily difficult by Vegas Golden Knights coach Peter DeBoer

Am I missing something? Anaheim, Kings and San Jose hasn't exactly been fantastic the last seasons. Minnesota didn't impress me too much during the playoffs.

If I was Vegas and got to wish for a division to be put in, that one would definitely be it. The one with most sail through potential.

Or as I said, am I missing something?

^Everyone praises everyone in hockey with cliches

Devils,Caps both announced their helmet ads. They replaced the team logo on the helmet with ads. It's only for this season to bring in extra money. I could see it becoming permanent in the future, but hopefully not as big as the one this season is.

Seems like many will be the teams arena sponsor getting to advertise on their helmet instead.

                      Key dates for this season:

If everything goes according to plan, July could be a fun month. Stanley Cup Finals, Expansion Draft, Entry Draft AND Free Agency.

Lots, especially if the UK variant is already in North America.
The NBA couldn't even make it 24 hours without having to postpone a game.

The good news is that we should know inside the first 4-6 weeks of the season how this is going to go, so it should be easier to make schedule adjustments. Also hope for an early Canadian spring.

                          Schedule is out!

Many times we see teams play each other two or even 3 games straight.

I cant wait for the season to start. Playing the same few teams all the time will be fun.

I wouldn't get too excited yet. Still seems like there is a lot to work through.

Hopefully it all gets resolved. Non playoff teams are reporting to camp next week. Players are already starting to head back to their teams city for training camp.

Hopefully it doesn't end up like a Jays situation for an entire division where you go through camp, do everything you do, only to find out at the end that you can't play at your home.
