I dont think the Habs one would've been fair as he never had a proper season up to then to really do anything. They did get rid of some of his assistants, like special teams guys (PP/PK failed big time to end the season and carried into the playoffs).
But this year, no excuses. Trotz would be a great choice. I think they apparently had interest in Boudreau, but that was as an assistant, and he obviously took a better job than that.
But Trotz taking a head coaching job if the Leafs paid him enough, and probably bringing in his own guys or just other people for other stuff, that could be a good option.
They definitely could use a coach who has been there, done that. Especially someone who has learned from many first round exits himself early on in his career.
