There's a new head coach for the Chargers in the SFL. Norv Turner got the boot, after missing the playoffs two years in a row.

New head coach d0r1en0 looks to turn things around.

Philip Rivers is coming off his worst season stat wise, but still managed to put up 4,000 plus passing yards. He's still in his prime and an elite QB.

Ryan Mathews is coming off a 1,000 yard season and a pro bowl appearance. His dark horse is injuries. Speaking of injury 1st play of his preseason he breaks his clavicle. Hopefully he's back by the time the league starts so I don't miss time with out him.

Gone is Vincent Jackson, but in return we try and shore up the receiving corps with a healthy Gates, Meachem, and Eddie Royal. Don't forget about 6'5 M80 Malcom Floyd.

In the draft we went defense. With the additions of LB "Supa" Melvin Ingram, DE Kendal Reyes, and SS Brandon Taylor. Also made a splash in free agency with OLB J. Johnson from the ravens.

The Chargers year in and year out have the parts to make some noise. Will this be the year?

Positions of need: SS it's been a revolving door here in SD. Need someone in the back field along side Eric weddle.

Left Tackle: McNiel is no longer with us. We need someone to protect his blind side.

Packers 41 Chargers 48

After having one of his worse seasons last year, Rivers started out this season on the right page.

Finishing the game with a passer rating of 154.3 while going 8-11 for 174 yards ZERO INTs & THREE TDs while only playing 16 downs. Another note was the fact that he kept his jersey clean. Not allowing the packets to get to him.

Ryan Mathews had 18 yards on 5 caries. An average of 3.6 yards while not the best, is a step in the right direction. Main thing: walked away uninjured. Will keep an eye on the number of plays he sees as to keep him healthy.

Speaking of healthy, Gates seems to be doing just fine. 6 receptions 160 yards, 4 TDs. With the likes of Gronk and Grahm he looks to remind people that he's still a threat anywhere on the field.

Defense: We feel we have a lot of play makers on this side of the field. We play as a unit, there are no individuals out here.

7 sacks (pause)
13 TFL
3 Int
Allowed 250 passing yards while giving up 198 on the ground. Stopping the run is one thing, but a team like GB we are glad our secondary held its own. The run is something we need to address.

Injuries:
SS Atari Bigby will miss the rest of the preseason although he should only be sidelined for about 2 weeks. We want him ready to go 100% when we open the season and will give our rookie from LSU Brandon Taylor more looks while he is out.

All in all it felt good to get the Win. There is a lot our team needs to work on. We look forward to this upcoming (pause) season.

Be on the lookout for the Chargers to make a move in FA at the WR position now that our #4 WR Vincent Brown is out for the season with a broken ankle. (pre-existing)

It's early into week two of the preseason. Chargers are making a FA move. Say hello to a new member of the team.

Name: TJ Houshmandzadeh

Birthdate: September 26, 1977

Position: WR

Height/Weight: 6'1"/199

College: Oregon State

Pros: Bengals, 74 starts in eight years.

Notable Stats: Five consecutive 900+ yard seasons

20 Word Scouting Report: Quick, powerful, excellent route runner, great body control, carves zones, shields defender, hard to press, good run after the catch

With are young prospect Brown being moved to IR this adds depth at the WR position in our Vertical Offense. Look for him to get the start in the slots in the upcoming weeks to get up to speed with the O.

One of our rookies we are real excited out this year, is our WR Chris Owusu.

Owusu's physical attributes are incredible; pure 4.3 speed with a 40"-plus vertical to match.

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1347761100.368691.jpg

He may be seen as a speed merchant, but a 6'0", near 200-pound frame who can bench press 225 pounds 19 times has plenty of strength to cope with physical corners in the NFL.

The thing to admire most about Owusu is that he reaches his top gear straight away and doesn't slow down until he completes his route. He can also go up and get the ball at its highest point in a similar fashion to a receiver much taller than he is.

He is a big play waiting to happen and he also is less raw in the route-running department than many receivers who were actually drafted in the 2012 NFL Draft.

To me, Owusu is a future starter in the NFL if he can stay injury-free because he has blistering speed, strength to beat the press, good route-running and a good pedigree from his time at Stanford.

A three-year starter in college, I really hope Owusu can have a long career with the Chargers in which he can showcase just how dynamic a talent he is.

Next week the Chargers look for more improvement as they take on the Vikings with their dominant run game with their all pro back Adrian Peterson. Also on the defensive side of the football can the Chargers protect Rivers against all pro pass rusher Jared Allen.
