All-Time Roster Neutralized Stats Project

I've started a project with the intent of using Neutralized Stats from Baseball-Reference to create a universal scale for batters and pitchers across all eras to use as a blueprint for all-time roster player ratings.

This spreadsheet creates ratings based off each player's three best qualifying seasons (I go by OPS for batters and I use a formula for pitchers to determine those three seasons). This is an attempt at creating a "peak" version of any given historical player. If a player doesn't have three qualifying seasons (20 G for Pitchers or 300 AB for Batters), their career neutralized stat line is used.

To create ratings, you just need to copy and paste the player's standard and neutralized stats (1984 AL for Pitchers and 1993 AL for Batters - both 4.42 R/G) in the appropriate boxes in the BatterCalc and PitcherCalc sections, then sort by either pitcher rating or OPS in descending order. You can then find their "Three Best Seasons" and "Career" stat lines in the middle, which are automatically generated.

Finalized Player Ratings are shaded in teal in the Batters and Pitchers sheets. They are all percentiles based on the entire pool of players, so the more players that are added, the more accurate the numbers become.

I have over 4300 historical players added so far. I only recently added a stamina rating based on IP/G from pitchers' three seasons or career numbers, so more and more pitchers will have their stat lines updated with Stamina ratings as I go year-by-year (I started in 2019 and have added each pitcher with at least 20 games in a season, and I'm now in 2006. I have plenty of other pitchers from throughout history already, but this is how I'm being thorough).

You can view the ratings that I have so far below:

This is very cool.

What does 4+C+P stand for in the Batters tab?

That’s sorta my equivalent to an overall rating (or really, percentile) for a batter based on those 4 categories (contact, power, vision, and discipline), but weighted with contact and power counting twice as much (so the average of CON, CON, POW, POW, VIS, DIS).

Re: All-Time Roster Neutralized Stats Project

Very cool. Are you considering putting an all-time roster out there based on these ratings?

Re: All-Time Roster Neutralized Stats Project

I just linked an updated file in the OP that features neutralized three-year-peak statlines for 5,810 players throughout MLB history, including all pitchers to have had at least 20 appearances for the following franchises:

Athletics
Yankees
Angels
Rangers
Astros
Mets
Padres
Brewers
Nationals
Royals
Blue Jays
Mariners
Rockies
Marlins
Diamondbacks
Rays

I'm focusing just on pitchers right now and will move on to batters afterward.
