Toronto Raptors Roster Rundown: Player Reports, Depth Chart, Predictions and more
_________________________________________________
By Brandon Walker
October 12th, 2021

The Raptors finished last season 12th in the Eastern Conference just a year after winning 53 games and 2nd in the East. It was obviously a disappointing season but when you take into consideration the circumstances the team played under you can understand the poor season. With the travel restrictions in Canada at the time, the Toronto Raptors became the Tampa Bay Raptors as they played all their home games in the sunny state of Florida. As if that wasn't enough already, they had multiple key players go down to COVID during the year which hurt them in the long run. This offseason they're were big changes with Kyle Lowry being moved in a sign and trade to the Miami Heat in exchange for Goran Dragic and Precious Achiuwa. Lowry has been the heart and soul of this team since 2013 and will go down as one of, if not the greatest Raptor of all time. It'll definitely be weird not having him on the roster for the first time in 8 years. With some new faces coming to Toronto, let's go player by player on the roster and give a short scouting report about each one.

Point Guards

Goran Dragic - 6'3 190lbs 35 Years Old | 13.4 PPG 3.4 RPG 4.4 APG
One half of the Lowry sign and trade is Slovenian point guard Goran Dragic. The former Miami Heat already got off to a rocky start with the Raptors after comments he made to the media saying Toronto is not where he wants to be. He has since rescinded said comments but it’s already made an impact on Raps fans. If the Raptors choose to keep the 35 year old he could be a nice facilitator for the team and replace Lowry as the go-to ball handler. It seems more likely that a trade will be made revolving around Dragic early in the season.

Malachi Flynn - 6'1 175lbs 23 Years Old | 7.5 PPG 2.5 RPG 2.9 APG
Heading into his sophomore season, Malachi Flynn will look to take on a big role with the team after a great end to last season that saw him win rookie of the month honours in April. He’s a pesky defender and a good playmaker who can be a nice player off the bench for the Raps this season. He could turn into a key rotational piece for years to come

Shooting Guards

Fred VanVleet - 6'1 197lbs 27 Years Old | 19.6 PPG 4.2 RPG 6.3 APG
To start the season Freddie will be the number one option for the Raptors which could either work out or the more likely option, he struggles to get buckets. VanVleet is a great player but he’s not who you want as your teams first option. With a Dragic trade looking more and more likely, VanVleet could see a lot of minutes at the one this year. He’s signed for 3 more years with a player option in year three. He’s proven he can be a big contributor on a championship team and the Raptors will need to him to be great this season to contend come playoff time

Gary Trent Jr. - 6'5 209lbs 22 Years Old | 15.3 PPG 2.6 RPG 1.4 APG
Acquired in the Norman Powell trade last year, Gary Trent Jr. is just 22 years old and if he develops the way the Raps hope he can turn into one of the best shooting guards in the Eastern Conference. He averaged 16 points a game while with the Raps and although his defense is not great whatsoever he has the time and people around him to take some big steps in the right direction in Toronto. This could be a breakout year for the former Trailblazer

Svi Mykhailiuk - 6'7 205lbs 24 Years Old | 8.5 PPG 2.5 RPG 1.7 APG
Rather then sign with the team that originally drafted him in the Lakers, Mykhailiuk decided to head north of the border and join the Raptors. He’s a sharpshooter who will be relied on for his scoring ability and with the amount of versatility Toronto has defensively, Svi’s defensive liabilities should be well hidden

Small Forwards

OG Anunoby - 6'7 232lbs 24 Years Old | 15.9 PPG 5.5 RPG 2.2 APG
OG is expected to have a breakout season for the Raptors this year. He averaged 16 points a game last season and I wouldn't be surprised to see him reach 20 this season. He's great on the defensive end, is athletic and can shoot the 3 ball. He could be a reason the Raptors become a contender again in the East if he takes a big step this season and becomes one of their best players.

Scottie Barnes - 6'7 225lbs 20 Years Old | Florida State
A majority of Raptors fans were not happy when they heard Scottie Barnes name at the 4th overall pick and were expecting Jalen Suggs to be selected. So it wasn't the most warming of welcomes by the fans but with the way Barnes has handled the media and answered questions about playing in Toronto, this kid will become a fan favourite soon enough. He has the potential to be a stellar defensive player

Isaac Bonga - 6'8 180lbs 21 Years Old | 2.0 PPG 1.6 RPG 0.6 APG
After two irrelevant seasons in Washington the German native is coming to Toronto to try and become an NBA regular. He's still got to add some weight to his frame because being only 180lbs at that height is not good enough. He's still only 21 years old and can still develop into a rotational piece for an NBA team, be it in Toronto or somewhere else.

Dalano Banton - 6'9 204lbs 21 Years Old | Nebraska
The hometown kid is definitely going to be a long term project but he has the raw potential to become a nice piece for the Raptors. He’s already a fan favourite and the first Canadian ever drafted by the Raptors. He has guard skills at the height of 6'9 which is something that could be huge for any team. Don’t expect him to be a contributor anytime soon however, he still has a long way to go.

Power Forwards

Pascal Siakam - 6'9 230lbs, 27 Years Old | 21.4 PPG 7.2 RPG 4.5 APG
While he won't play for the first few weeks of the season, Spicy P is the backbone of this team now with the departure of Kyle Lowry this offseason. Siakam had an alright season last year but he wasn't an all star and while his field goal percentage was relatively similar to the year prior, his three point percentage dipped from 36% to just under 30% on almost 2 less attempts per game. That's something he'll need to bounce back from to regain that all star status as a player. They're were trade rumours all offseason surrounding Pascal but those have since died down and barring a complete collapse this year, Siakam should finish the season as a Toronto Raptor

Chris Boucher - 6'9 200lbs 28 Years Old | 13.6 PPG 6.7 RPG 1.0 APG
One of 5 Undrafted players on the Raptors roster, Boucher was an amazing gem for Toronto and he's now a a great bench option at the power forward position. He's got a big wingspan and can defend a lot of different positions. He can knock down the 3 and while he doesn't grab a lot of rebounds, can finish on the inside. He's on the last year of his contract and will need to be re-signed this offseason. Depending on his play this season he could be looking at a nice payday by the Summer

Yuta Watanabe - 6'9 215lbs 27 Years Old | 4.4 PPG 3.2 RPG 0.8 APG
He's third on the depth chart at the 4 but with Siakam out to start the season he will get backup minutes and will have a chance to prove himself to coach Nick Nurse that he deserves those minutes. He has a high motor and is a great locker room guy. He's known around the league as the guy Anthony Edwards dunked on but to the Raptors he's a player who can play rotational minutes and provide good defense and 3 point shooting.

Centres

Khem Birch - 6'9 233lbs 29 Years Old | 7.2 PPG 5.8 RPG 1.3 APG
It's looking like Nick Nurse will be running a platoon of Achiuwa and Birch at centre as neither player has shown they are the clear starter. Birch will likely have the upper hand due to playing on the team last season and fitting in well. Both will get an opportunity to take minutes away from each other but will probably start with even minutes on opening night. Birch is yet another player on Toronto who plays really good defense which is a theme of this team. It's up to him and his play this season to decide his minutes allocation throughout the year

Precious Achiwua - 6'8 225lbs 22 Years Old | 5.0 PPG 3.4 RPG 0.5 APG
One half of the return for Kyle Lowry, The Memphis alum will share minutes with Birch this season. Precious has the potential to take over the starting minutes this season and is looked at as the big man of the future for the Raptors. He's a good rebounder despite being only 6'8 and can score pretty well on the inside as well as providing good defense under the rim. He's apart of the future here in the Toronto.

Freddie Gillespie - 6'9 245lbs 24 Years Old | 5.6 PPG 4.8 RPG 0.4 APG
Played 20 games with the Raps last season and will be the 3rd string off the bench at the centre position. Probably won't get many minutes unless injuries become a concern. Provides good defense and rebounding but is only 6'9. The Raptors don't have a centre over 6'9 and it could be something they look into acquiring this season.

Season Outlook
With everything back to normal for the Raptors this season and finally being back at home in the Scotiabank Arena, expect this team to be competing for a playoff or play in spot. They will feel the loss of Lowry but they should win more games then they did last season. They will have to get buckets from places they wouldn't expect to start the season with Spicy P out but once he's back they will be able to compete with most of the teams in the East. I see them winning around 40-45 games and finishing as a 7-9 seed, good enough for a play-in spot.
Season Prediction - 43-39, 3rd in the Atlantic Division

Raptors win 107-98 in Season Opener vs Beal and the Wizards
Kaitlyn Dambry | @Dambry_K
October 20th, 2021

TORONTO- In the Season Opener the Toronto Raptors take on the Washington Wizards in game one of the 82 game season. The Raptors are without their best player in Pascal Siakam as he still recovers from a shoulder injury. The Raptors will have a different looking lineup and one that won’t have Lowry for the first time in what feels like forever. For the Wizards, they shipped off Russell Westbrook to LA this offseason and boosted their depth with the likes of Kuzma, Harrell and KCP. They also went out and signed Former Brooklyn Net Spencer Dinwiddie to replace the hole left by Westbrook at the point guard position. Both teams have different looking rosters and it should be interesting to see how this one plays out.

Throughout the first quarter it was back and forth basketball with both teams getting buckets. Beal was the catalyst offensively for the Wizards and was the only player who looked like he had any confidence in his scoring ability for Washington. The 1st quarter ended with the Raptors up 1 by a score of 28 to 27. The Raps gameplay for the 2nd quarter was simple. Lock up Bradley Beal. And that they did as they kept his scoring to a minimum and with nobody else on the Wizards taking initiative, the Raps ended up allowing only 16 points in the quarter while scoring 29 of their own. VanVleet should get props for being able to hinder Beal’s scoring in the quarter as it was a big reason for Toronto getting the “W” tonight. At Halftime Beal was easily the best player on the court but with not much help and the Raptors getting their buckets the point lead was 11 for Toronto. The Raps had 6 blocks in the first half alone and they came from their centres Khem Birch and Precious Achiuwa who had some monster blocks in the paint.

The Wizards found themselves down by 11 at halftime due to a lack of offense from players not named Bradley Beal

After the break the game continued right where it left off with the Wizards unable to continually get buckets. Beal was still getting his but he had little to no help from his teammates which was almost sad to watch. In the last 5 or so minutes of the quarter the Raps were running a lineup of Flynn-Mykhailiuk-Barnes-Watanabe-Gillespie. In that time Scottie Barnes scored his first bucket as an NBA player and as a Toronto Raptor. He got a pick near the three point line and drove right past Beal to lay it up and lay it in over the All-Star. The Raptors lead was even bigger heading into the 4th quarter as they led just short of 20 points with 19.

Scottie Barnes scores his first basket in the NBA with a drive past Beal

The 4th quarter was where it almost all fell apart for the Raptors. It started off good for the Raptors as they kept the big lead until about the 9 minute mark of the quarter when Nick Nurse decided to put the deep bench players on the court. The Wizards started to score time and time again and even when Nurse put the starters back in it didn’t stop the continuation of buckets from Washington. They went on a 14-4 run to bring the game to within 1 point. Beal was the main advocacy for the run as the Raptors just couldn’t seem to stop him without fouling. Nurse called a key timeout and it looked like he said to settle down and calm yourselves. It worked as the Raptors started to regain a lead. It was a tight game down to the final minute or so before the Wizards offense dried up and they couldn’t get clutch buckets down the stretch. The Raptors were able to secure a 107-98 point victory in a game that shouldn’t have been as close as it ended up being.

Fred VanVleet scores on an insane MJ like layup that had the crowd going crazy

After the game Goran Dragic was interviewed by David Aldridge and had this to say about how the game transpired:

David Aldridge: Goran, you guys had a big lead going into the 3rd and even 4 minutes into the 4th quarter, what happened in that 4th quarter that led to Washington going on that big run?

Goran Dragic: We just played poor defensively and thought the game was already over. We let them get back into it and it almost cost us tonight. Luckily we have a great group of guys who were able to realize what was happening and take back control of the play and get the win.

DA: How did you think you played in your first game as a Raptor?

GD: It wasn’t my best performance shooting the ball but I felt I did a good job of finding guys off the pick and roll and with guys like Precious and Birchy they find ways to get open and I found them a good amount of times tonight.

DA: At 35 years old and on the final year of your contract, what’s next for you and is this somewhere you can see yourself playing long term

GD: I know I made some comments in the media that were taken out of context and misconstrued but this city, this country has very passionate fans that care about their team and their players. It’s too early to talk about contracts and all that but I’m just gonna enjoy my time here in Toronto and not take it for granted.

DA: Alright thanks for your time Goran

GD: Thanks David

The Raps will take on Luka and the Dallas Mavericks in their 2nd game of the season in 3 days

Not sure if it's showing up that way for you, but all of your images are showing broken links for me. You put a lot of effort into your posts, so I want to ensure the pictures show up properly.

I like the depth in the posts! But images are not showing up for me either... try to use an image hosting site (Imgur has been the cream of the crop this past few years.)
