All-Time Wrestling Draft Results and Discussion (Poll Included)

so, i was sitting around on the boards one day when i came up with an idea: why not take 5 respected members of the wrestling forums, open up the past 31 years of wrestling and hold a draft?

the rules:
  • 5 owners.
  • 30 rounds - 25 have to be wrestlers, 5 miscellaneous (wrestlers, valets/managers, bookers, etc.)
  • performers have to have debuted after 1970 and had to have spent a significant or notable time in north america.
  • each performer picked is to be assigned a 5 year window by his owner that represents him (i.e. flair '82-'87, hogan '86-'91, etc.)
  • only individuals are to be selected; tag teams and stables have to have each member picked to be awarded. if you are attempting to make a tag team, the partners years must overlap (i.e. no selecting hbk '93-'98 and jannetty '87-'92 and trying to claim them as the rockers)
  • no duplicates.
  • create your own organization.

all companies are to be judged on the following criteria:
  • backstage/locker room chemistry
  • work-rate/in-ring ability
  • money-making/drawing power
  • entertainment value/promo power
  • longevity/potential

participants were advised to consider talent, attitude, ego, and potential, amongst other things when selecting a roster. that is to say, you should know that selecting 12 ego-maniacal headcases that feel they have to main event is probably detrimental to the organization.

each organization is allotted 2-3 singles titles and a tag title. they were told to organize their rosters into divisions based on title contention and then compile a ten-match card for their big annual pay-per-view, as well as provide a company mission statement that outlines the vision.

Where Wrestling Matters Mission Statement
This organization is bringing what everyone comes to watch, some entertainment, but mostly wrestling. You are not tuning in to hear about soap operas and elaborate storylines. You are here to watch wrestling in its simplistic form. People do not like each other, or a person was brutally assaulted and it’s time to settle things in the ring. The world’s best come to compete here at WWM, and only the best should apply. If you are looking for a heavy drama storyline driven company, I suggest you go elsewhere. If you are looking for men to step into the ring and prove who the best in the world truly is, then you have come to the right place.
Every one of these guys are among the best workers and most entertaining men on the planet. They won’t tell you about vitamins, their million dollar watches, or about the people’s champions. You may get a rare abduction from the hands of the Brothers of Destruction, or get freaked out by the freak Goldust, but in the end, you are here to watch high quality, faced paced, bone breaking action.

My Dream Card
10. Bret Hart vs Jericho for the WWM Championship, Iron Man Match
9. Cody Rhodes vs DDP
8. Rock N Roll Express vs Midnight Rockers Tag Titles
7. Kevin Nash vs Sheamus
6. Undertaker vs Kane Hell in a Cell
5. Scott Hall vs Bryan Danielson for the WWM North American Championship
4. Umaga vs Goldust
3. Owen Hart vs Dolph Ziggler
2. Kerry Von Erich vs Lex Luger
1. Rey Mysterio vs Jushin Lyger vs Evan Bourne for the High Flyers Championship in a Ladder Match

FULLY LOADED WRESTLING

Mission statement
My approach to the draft was quite simple, really. The goal was to load my roster with both in-ring ability and a mix of star power from around the world. My top picks might not be as marketable as the rest of the guys, but they make up for it in pretty much all other aspects we are shooting for here. By adding big name international wrestlers such as The Great Muta and Ultimo Dragon (Japan) along with Eddie Guerrero and Konnan (Mexico) I believe I have helped my bottom line. Simply put, my fed has a little something for everyone. I have tremendous in-ring competitors, super heavyweights, high flyers, international superstars, stiff workers for the smarks and a thriving tag team division. Lest we forget that my television broadcasts will have the best production values with the duo of Monsoon and Heenan on commentary to go along with Okerlund and Finkel doing their thing. I truly believe that I have the most diverse group out of all of us and that I have enough wrestling, sports entertainment and production values to put me ahead of the rest.

Faces
Sting
Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat
Jake "The Snake" Roberts
Eddie Guerrero
Mick Foley
Sid Vicious
Greg "The Hammer" Valentine
Bam Bam Bigelow
Lowi Ki
Ultimo Dragon
Demolition
Strike Force
The Hardy Boyz

Heels
Ric Flair
The Great Muta
"Ravishing" Rick Rude
Konnan
Stan Hansen
JBL
Larry Zbyszko
King Kong Bundy
Money Inc.
Brian Pillman & Shelton Benjamin
Virgil

1- FLW Heavyweight Championship match:

Ric Flair (c) w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan vs. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat

GM Note: These two guys are the only wrestlers to ever have THREE 5 star matches with one another and you should expect nothing but a fourth one here.

-

2- Singles match:

Sting vs. The Great Muta

GM Note: Another duo that had some classic matches back in their heyday. I believe putting Muta in such a high profile, main event match will bring in good money from Japan.

-

3- FLW North American Championship match:

"Ravishing" Rick Rude (c) w/ Bobby "The Brain" Heenan vs. Jake "The Snake" Roberts

GM Note: Yet another duo that had a classic feud back in the day. Rude is perfect as the arrogant heel that everyone loves to hate with all the mid card babyfaces chasing him for his title.

-

4- FLW Tag Team Championship match:

Demolition (c) vs. Money Inc. w/ Virgil

GM Note: One of the most popular tag teams of all time and one of the most hated. It would have been a natural feud had these two teams peaked at the same time.

-

5- Hell In A Cell match:

Mick Foley vs. Stan Hansen

GM Note: Now for some sports entertainment! One of the stiffest workers and most hated heels ever takes on the guy who can take the worst beating in the most brutal match type out there. Profit!

-

6- Singles match:

Eddie Guerrero vs. Konnan

GM Note: Latin America would be pumped for this dream match on the grandest stage featuring Latino Heat and the Mexican equivalent of Hulk Hogan. I can already feel how heavy the money bags are.

-

7- Triple Threat Tag Team TLC match for a future Tag Team Championship match:

Strike Force vs. The Hardy Boyz vs. Brian Pillman & Shelton Benjamin

GM Note: Pillman and Benjamin seemed to be a natural fit to tag up and compete with two other super athletic teams in one of the most exciting match types there is. This contest has excitement written all over it.

-

8- No Disqualification match:

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. King Kong Bundy

GM Note: The classic, super heavyweight bout. Bam Bam will work this one as the face and you just know Gorilla will drop his famous line of, "The irresistible force meeting the immovable object."

-

9- Tag Team match:

Sid Vicious & Greg "The Hammer" Valentine vs. JBL & Larry Zbyszko

GM Note: A babyface Sid powerbombing a super heel JBL would get a nice pop while two of the stiffest workers of all time beat the living crap out of each other outside the ring.

-

10- Singles match:

Low Ki vs. Ultimo Dragon

GM Note: After assessing all of my talent, I couldn't think of a better opening bout. Give these two amazing in-ring performers 15 minutes at the start of the show and they will not let you down.

mission statement

once hart and flair went first, austin was the obvious pick. however, once i got hogan, i knew that i didn't need to get another guy who was a draw, because they inherently elevate whoever they're facing, anyway. i also knew that, essentially, i couldn't gain and more fans since i already have the two most popular wrestlers of all-time in my organization. there are no fans that i won't reach with those two, and for the stragglers from the iwc that won't latch onto austin or hogan, i reel them in with my grappling specialists.

i have the casual fans (austin, hogan, piper, lesnar), i have the diehard wrestling guys (angle, benoit, vader) and everything in between. i have tag teams, entertainers, workers, technicians, brawlwers, stiff guys, big men, monsters. it will be impossible to watch my show and not be entertained. most of my guys are incredibly effective as faces or heels, and they all work together pretty well, so i could elevate almost anyone and they wouldn't seem out of place against the top dogs.

but in the end, i think i have the most profitable organization with the widest reach in terms of fan bases and future potential. the fued combinations are endless, and i could manufacture a variety of pushes, factions and moments just based on my performers and the mind of paul heyman (who i won't let anywhere near my money).

Vision for my brand
Basically, I wanted as well rounded a brand as I could possibly get. I wanted a solid blend of main event level guys, mid-card level guys, "special" division guys (cruiserweight/X-Division, and a few ladies to wrestle, as well.
I wanted to try to recreate what I consider the golden era of televised wrestling - 1995-2002. I drafted people for in ring ability, marketability, shock value, "holy ****" value (during matches), sex appeal. I wanted a powerful and marketable tag team division. It's great to have countless solo competitors, but when you have great tag teams, it adds a special flavor to your product.
I chose Eric Bischoff to run my company because I feel like he was a visionary in the wrestling industry. Based on the years I chose him, I won't have to worry about him running the company into the ground. Also, he gives me a guy who will be ultra competitive with the other guys' companies; maybe even stealing some of their superstars (you better keep Samoa Joe happy, 15hunter! haha) Also, he gives me a capable commentator for my matches.
I wanted Michael Buffer from his WCW days for one reason, as well - he gives me an aspect that no one else has. How sick is it going to sound to hear him say "HE IS...THE HEARTBREAK KID. HE IS...THE SHOWSTOPPER...HE IS..THE MAIN EVENT...HE...IS...SHAWN MICHAELS!" Couldn't pass that up! (and if you say you didn't read that in Michael Buffer's voice, you're lying!)
I drafted my 3 divas (Lita, Trish, & Kelly Kelly) for different reasons. I want all 3 for sex appeal, but Lita & Trish can put on some great filler matches in the ring, as well. Kelly Kelly? Well, I got her for one damn reason...every show will have her Expose'! (sometimes, more than once! )

Mission Statement

Vince McMahon said it best. It's allllll about the mahneyyyy. With my roster, I have unbelievable draws. Be it megadraws in Randy Savage, The Rock, Edge, Cena, Ultimate Warrior and the McMahons, to international fans with Del Rio, Bulldog, Yokozuna, and Finlay, to fans all around who just love high quality wrestling.

I wanted versatility in my guys. So many can be very strong heels and faces and that really opens up the potential for booking. I also wanted an edge. With an influx of some of history's craziest characters to many members of the old ECW, my show would be a must-watch each and every week.

From feuds that existed between my guys to feuds that would be very entertaining to watch given the specific performers in my federation, there would be no shortage of intrigue, faces, and heels.

All in all, I believe I have a complete organization. One that would make tons of money and provide a great product to satisify those who want fantastic sports entertainment and those who want top-notch wrestling.

I would have a World Championship belt, an intercontinential belt, and a US belt. Each belt would be a classy design, and the champion would ALWAYS be introduced last. Even though the following is broken down, I feel that there could be so much crossover between main eventers, IC guys, US guys. So many of the guys I have could hang in either "division", as evidenced by the card to follow. And as I said, so many guys can either be heels or faces depending on what's going on. Generally though....

World Championship Contenders
Randy Savage w/ Miss Elizabeth (face)
The Rock (heel)
Edge (heel)
John Cena (face)
Ultimate Warrior (face)
Bob Backlund
Iron Sheik

IC Contenders
Mr. Perfect
Honky Tonk Man
British Bulldog
Shane Douglas w/ Francine
Tommy Dreamer w/ Beulah
Don Muraco
Jeff Jarrett
Giant
Yokozuna
Sgt. Slaughter

US Title:
The Sandman
Taz
The Miz
Dean Malenko
Zack Ryder
Alberto Del Rio
Fit Finlay
Ken Shamrock

Lots of drama and possibilities with Vince, Shane, and Steph in the fold too. Stables, managing, hell even some wrestling if need be.

"Matrixmania I"
1. The Miz v. Zack Ryder
2. Mr. Perfect v. Taz (Round 1 of IC Title Tourney)
3. Honky Tonk Man v. Ultimate Warrior (Round 1 of IC Title Tourney)
4. Tommy Dreamer, The Sandman, and Beulah v. Dean Malenko, Shane Douglas, and Francine in a 6-man ECW match.
5. Iron Sheik v. Bob Backlund
6. Giant v. Yokozuna
7. Ken Shamrock v. Alberto Del Rio v. Jeff Jarrett for the vacant US title
8. Finals of IC Title Tourney
9. Randy Savage v. Edge for the vacant World Championship
10. The Rock v. John Cena

Re: all-time wrestling draft results...

This is great! I'd of taken you up on the offer to join, but only started watching wrestling around 97 and it was strictly WWE.

You should add a poll where we can vote on the best draft/ company.

Re: all-time wrestling draft results...

Just so I can head people off at the pass: Yes, I chose Bret Hart first. For my vision for my company and considering backstage politics, ability to work in the ring and be a general, and ability to draw world wide, plus him being my favorite wrestler of all time, it was and easy choice for me. It wasn't strictly about the money with me, and I do believe my roster reflects that.

All that being said, looking at the other organizations then once I put my card together, I realized how truly overmatched my company would be financially. I have some really good draws, like Jericho, Bret, Undertaker and others, but the sheer star power, like that of every one of the other companies, would out draw me.

Still, I would not trade my roster for the world. All it would take is some good booking, provided by Jim Cornette, and some solid promo work from high quality managers like Paul Bearer, Jimmy Hart, AAE, and Vicki, and some high quality wrestling and I believe I could sustain a really high quality wrestling company.

My entire basis for my organization was early 90's WWE, semi realistic fighting.

Re: all-time wrestling draft results...

Wow, until reading some of the other guys' tag team divisions, I didn't know we could create our own tag teams, as well as use the ones we drafted. I would have had some serious tag teams that I could create. Just imagine ECW Rob Van Dam teamed with CM Punk.

EDIT - glad I'm not the only one that went with the tournament idea for one of my titles. I wasn't sure how you guys felt about having wrestlers compete in multiple matches in one night.

I would definitely team some guys up too if there was a full fledged federation going on. Possibilities are endless. Perfect/Taz, Tonk/Jarrett, etc.

Re: All-Time Wrestling Draft Results and Discussion (Poll Included)

To be fair, the teaming of Benjamin and Pillman is the only one I intend to be permanent in my organization. The match between Sid/Valentine and JBL/Zbyszko is a one off type deal just so I could get everyone on the card for my big event.
