Yankees Get Teixeira
Posted on December 23, 2008 at 04:49 PM.
From ESPN.com

Free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira has reached agreement with the New York Yankees on an eight-year contract worth more than $170 million, two sources involved in the negotiations tell ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.

The Yankees swooped in on the 28-year-old Teixeira on Tuesday when it was believed the Boston Red Sox or the Washington Nationals were the likeliest to be his future employer. The Red Sox's offer was believed to be in the range of $170 million, and the Nationals reached out with an offer perhaps greater than that of Boston.

it is rediculous how much they have spent... they should be ashamed of themselves

Why should the Yankees be ashamed about making money and spending it on getting good players? They are doing what we all wished every team would do.

with a nation reeling from economic problems and families struggling to put food on their table, you have a baseball team spending huge amounts of money on baseball players.... and then asking for help to finish their stadium

As far as signing free agents, they're playing by the rules. With respect to the stadium funding, it's the government's fault for giving them the money for their stadium. If the government handed you a bunch of money, you wouldn't take it?

That said, I bet that the Yankees miss the playoffs again in '09. Just because you spend a bunch of money on free agents doesn't mean that you will be successful. The Yankees teams that won four championships in five years didn't do it with big-name, overpriced free agents. They won with solid players who did the little things that it takes to win. Working the count, smart at-bats, good baserunning, strong pitching, etc. Their middle relief situation is still a mess and Mariano isn't getting any younger.

yes they are playing by the rules its just irretating that they are throwing money around like nothing, while people in america is loosing their jobs and foreclosing on their homes. i am not one of them, i am fortunate but, its like they are throwing it in our face... no im not a red sox fan i bleed cubbie blue.

I beg the question; are the Yankees just not supposed to spend money because no other team will? Are they not supposed to get better because it might hurt someone's feelings?

no but do they really need to buy everyone possible? how did they do in the playoffs last year with all their talent? o yea they watched from their million dollar homes.... you cant buy the series... look at tampa they just play hard and have a very low budget... i wouldn't mind a salary cap... worked for the nfl.... it gives everyone a fair shot at talent

Charles Barkley voice- "This is Terrible Ernie, jus Terrible."

Can't wait to see another year of someone else winning the title other than the Yanks.

Haha, I can hear Barkley now. "Trbl, Ernie. Jus trbl."

I'll use this opportunity to once again argue that baseball needs a salary cap. Doesn't hurt to dream.

Sure, the goverment is fault for handing out the initial billion. But then the Yanks went back to the city of NY and asked for close to 500 Million MORE. That's where I have a problem. Spend whatever you want on Freeagents, but don't ask the taxpayers of nyc (me) to fund your bull**** unnecessary stadium right before you hand out over 400 million in guaranteed money. It's borrowing money from your parents to buy a house and then blowing that money on strippers and blow.
But don't worry everyone, the financial crisis will hit the Yanks next year. All the suites and advertising was all paid for well in advance and came before the Lehman Bros fall and everything subsequent. Next year, these companies would be spending on stuff like that. Atleast one can dream.
