Re: Never Daunted: An Indiana Hoosiers Dynasty (NCAA 14)

Hunting Badgers

Madison, WI- Indiana hit the road for the first time in the 2018 campaign against the Wisconsin Badgers at Camp Randall Stadium. IU was victorious in Madison last season, and hoped for a repeat showing.

In what has become signature Hoosier style, Indiana took the game’s opening drive downfield slowly and methodically. IU’s Jon Manning finished the drive by scrambling his way into the endzone to put the Hoosiers out front early.

As it turns out, that would be all the scoring the Hoosiers would need. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves.

Wisconsin couldn’t put anything together on their first possession, and punted back to the Hoosiers. After trading punts, IU found themselves back on offense. The Hoosier possession would ultimately lead to Manning keeping the ball on an option play to score his second rushing touchdown from 4 yards out. Michael Keenan would add a touchdown just before the half, and the Hoosiers went into halftime up 21-0.

After a pair of three-and-outs to open the second half, Wisconsin was finally able to put a drive together, though they’d be stopped in the redzone by the Hoosier defense, settling for a field goal. IU would add on another touchdown courtesy of Michael Keenan, which would be the game’s final score. Indiana wins, 28-3.

“We just played our game,” said coach Pate afterward. “We controlled the ball, took care of it, and really suffocated them on defense. We played according to our gameplan, and we won the game.”

IU QB Jon Manning went 18 of 25 throwing for 207 yards and one interception. Manning didn’t have any passing scores, but picked up two touchdowns rushing. Michael Keenan also had a pair of touchdowns, to go with 108 yards on 24 carries.

Wisconsin was never able to really get their offense going. Badger QB Matt Foster turned in a disappointing effort, amassing only 29 yards through the air on just 4 completions. He also threw two interceptions. Wisconsin’s Clint Miranda carried the Wisconsin offense with 87 yards rushing and 20 yards receiving.

Indiana returns to the Hoosier state for their next matchup, though they’ll be playing in hostile territory, as they prepare for the Old Oaken Bucket game against rival Purdue. Purdue stunned the Hoosiers a season ago, winning 20-16 in Bloomington. Kickoff in West Lafayette is scheduled for 6:00 PM.

Game Notes
The similarities between this year's Oaken Bucket game and last year's are scary. Indiana is ranked in the top five and is undefeated, the heavy favorite. Purdue is having a poor start to the season, and are looking for something to feel good about. And you can be sure Indiana hasn't forgotten about last year's game. Purdue pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the year, winning 20-16. Now, the Hoosiers have a chance at revenge.
Keys to victory
Indiana- Focus. As Purdue showed last year, anybody can beat anybody on any given Saturday. Indiana has to keep their eyes on the task at hand, and play their game.
Purdue- Pray? Seriously though, Purdue is going to need to play their best game of the year if they want to shock the world for the second year in a row.
Prediction- Indiana 33, Purdue 10. Indiana has had 364 days to think about what happened last year. Add that to the fact that this is already a big rivalry against a hated opponent, and the Hoosiers should be fired up enough to bring home the Old Oaken Bucket.
Of course, that's what everyone thought last year, too...

Re: Never Daunted: An Indiana Hoosiers Dynasty (NCAA 14)

Avenged!

West Lafayette, IN- As the saying goes, it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. Indiana proved that saying true when they invaded enemy territory for the Battle for the Old Oaken Bucket Saturday night at Purdue’s Ross-Ade Stadium.

IU forced a quick Purdue punt on the first drive of the game, and were looking to strike early in the first. Indiana was able to advance into the redzone, but that’s when Purdue’s defense stiffened, and the Hoosiers settled for a field goal.

After trading punts and then trading interceptions, Indiana was able to get Michael Keenan into the endzone right before halftime, and Indiana went into the locker room up 10-0.

The third quarter was much of the same. Indiana tacked on another field goal, but weren’t able to put any more points on the board. Purdue would have their biggest drive of the game, and looked to make a game of it before being intercepted in the endzone to kill the drive.

The Hoosiers were able to pull away in the final quarter, first with Keenan’s second touchdown of the game, and then with a Nate Cross touchdown run to put the game on ice. Purdue’s biggest completed pass of the quarter was to an IU defender, and the Boilers couldn’t put together another decent drive or stop the Hoosiers offense, as Indiana gets some long awaited payback, winning 27-0.

“I thought they did a great job of putting pressure on us,” said coach Pate. “There were times it felt like we were playing with three guys on the offensive line, and their d-line had 20.

“I think when we shifted to running the ball more in the second half, that’s when we were able to find some breathing room.”

After Purdue’s defense shut down the Hoosiers last season, IU returned the favor, allowing Purdue to pick up only 119 offensive yards on their way to a shutout.

Michael Keenan scored two touchdowns for IU, along with 131 yards on 29 carries. Quarterback Jon Manning turned in a modest 10 of 21 for 124 yards and two interceptions.

Manning’s counterpart didn’t fare any better, as Purdue’s Cameron James, who was replacing injured QB Sean Perry, went 12 for 22 with only 49 yards, no touchdowns, and three picks, two of which came from IU’s Joe Moyer.

Indiana looks to capture another piece of hardware next week, as they travel to East Lansing’s Spartan Stadium to do battle for the Old Brass Spittoon with Michigan State. Kickoff in that one is scheduled for 8:00 PM.

IU's Joe Moyer with one of this two interceptions.
