I sure hope the reason Steve Young isn't in the game is because they couldn't snag him not because they overlooked him. HTF do you leave out one of the greatest Qbs in history who also holds the career rating record and ranks up there in many other areas? Lame. He's better than Montana. Only reason Joe had more success (aka SBs) is because the 80s 49ers team was stacked and no real free agency and no salary cap to deal with. Give Steve that 80s 9ers team and they'd probably have won the same or mroe rings.

Jim Brown not being in there...again, I'd like to hope it was some license issue not because they felt perhaps the greatest RB in history wasn't worth it.

This game will have to be totally amazing for me to buy it with my man Steve not in there.

Sheesh

I think most people would view Montana as a bigger catch for the game than Steve Young. No offense to Young, who was a great QB, but Montana was the most technically sound West Coast offense QB ever to run that offense.

And, lets not forget, there were some OTHER loaded teams in the 1980s/early 1990s as well. Bears, Giants, Redskins, Eagles (except in the playoffs.) The NFC was VERY stacked in the time of Montana.

Young had to worry about the Cowboys and a two year stint by the Packers.

I think its a wash...

4 SB > 1 SB, and that one Young SB was against a VERY inferior opponent. Montana faced 81 Bengals, 84 Dolphins (who were favored), 88 Bengals (who he had to come from behind to beat), and the 89 Broncos.

Granted, the 89 Broncos laid down in the big show, but none of Joe's four SB opponents were quite the "lucky to be there's" that the 94 Chargers were.

Also, Rice gave an interview recently, said he'd take Montana as his QB above everyone else.

But seriously- how many games did you watch Montana play? You were born the year he was drafted by the 9ers. So I can see you might be a bit biased towards young, as he was big in your mid teens. You were age 2, 4, 8, and 9 when Montana took home trophies.

Feelin' ya. I wanted to drive to three rivers and strangle Tim McKyer and Neil O Donnell.

People remember that last play (the incompletion to Barry Foster from the three) - but I also say that if it wasn't for McKyer's terribly blown coverage, we never would have had to have been in that position.

But Spank, look at it this way... we (we being the Steelers) weren't going to beat the Niners in the big show with our pedestrian offense at that time

I had gone back to Pittsburgh to visit that weekend (I live in the DC area now) and don't know that I've ever seen the city that depressed. Granted, it's that loss plus the Denver and New England losses that made the Super Bowl XXL win that much sweeter, but those were some really depressing times.

Interesting how a Super Bowl win can transform how people like Cohwer or Steve Young are viewed. Kinda unfortunate too, when you look at QBs like Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, Fran Tarkenton, etc. that made it there but didn't win. Either way, it shouldn't be expected that the game will have all of the "legends" - most of the players on the list can't be called NFL greats. But they bring name recognition/some sense of notoriety to the game. Plus, if it's successful it gives them a hook for future games, or at the very least DLC

As depressed as I was in January of 1995 (that game)-
NOTING tops late January of 1996 (SB XXX) for sheer depression.

We had a chance in that game. Levon Kirkland dominated that game starting at about the 2nd quarter on through the game, and stuffing Emmit repeatedly.

But then...

..argh..

Far too painful to recollect.
