Yes, I am gonna try to include a play of the game from now on, barring the dreaded replay glitch.

That Mariners team is very tough to pitch to, after that first game it is looking like I am going to have a rough series. Oh well, I look forward to hitting Johnson tonight.

Good stuff. I always enjoyed watching those A's teams of the late-80's.

Thanks!

I was not around to see the '89 A's but when I played with these rosters they stood out.

I love the combination of contact/speed (Rickey and David Henderson, Phillips) and power (McGwire, Parker, Canseco). Although I have been having a rough go of it lately, I am confident I can turn it around.

Athletics Win Pitching Duel

Mariners000001000190
Athletics100002000370

The Athletics beat the Mariners 3-1 on Saturday afternoon, evening up the series at one. Two aces, both looking to rebound off of a bad first start met in the game. Dave Stewart for the Athletics, and Randy Johnson for the Mariners. Only one could win, however, and Stewart pitched a gem, throwing 8 scorless innings before turning it over to closer Dennis Eckersley.

Dave Henderson earned the Player of The Game award, due to his 2 RBI single in the bottom of the 6th. Randy Johnson fell to 0-2 on the day, even though he pitched a great game. Manager Kurecki commented on the day:

"I think it is a great win. A huge confidence builder, if you will. Although these games may not seem important now, come september we could be looking back at this series saying how it changed the AL West race."

The rubber match of this series will be Sunday Afternoon at 1:05 PST. The Probables are
SEA: Chris Bosio (0-0, 2.84)
OAK: Mike Moore (0-1, 7.50)

PLAY OF THE GAME

Thanks. I like the videos too, so I will try to include them in every update I can. And yeah, Buhner killed me the first game.

Reminds me of when they used to have Buhner Haircut Night where everyone that came to the park and let them shave their head got in free. Boy, that was an ugly sight, looking out there at all those newly sheared pale heads!

Nice win, Whitesox. You're doing better than I am in my season (when I have gotten to play, that is).

Bad News Athletics

One of the 13 strikeouts for the A's

123456789RHE
Mariners100000100270
Athletics000000000052

The Athletics lost the rubber match on Sunday afternoon to the Mariners. It was a rather low scoring game, especially for the Athletics, who couldn't manage even 1 run. The Mariners got their first run on a Jay Buhner RBI single, and their second run on an RBI Walk from Catcher Chad Kreuter.

Mike Moore was pulled after the walk, and Todd Burns got out of a bases loaded, no out jam. The game got a little edgey in the 7th, as it seemed like Todd Burns retaliated by hitting Edgar Martinez, after Chris Bosio hit David Parker in the head earlier. Warnings were issued, and no further trouble arised.

The Athletics made 2 physical errors, on the day, and a few mental ones too. The defining play of the game consisted of Rickey Henderson taking a poor route to the Jay Buhner flyball, allowing the eventuall winning run to score. Manager kurecki spoke after the game.

"It's rediculous. Simpley Rediculous. These are grown men, grown men! They are getting paid all this money to not even care! Some of these errors--no the physical ones, those happen--the mental ones are bad. Mark McGwire Forgetting how many outs there are, and wasting an out. Rickey Henderson taking that bad route to the fly ball. This isn't a professional ball club! It's a little league team! There are gonna be some serious changes next week."

Starting Monday night, Boston comes to town, for three games. The probable starters for Monday nights game are:

Boston: Luis Tiant (0-1, 3.60)
Oakland: Bob Welch (0-0, 6.00)
