Damon Joins Philadelphia Outfield
The Phillies have added 36 year old outfielder Johnny Damon to their lineup this week. Damon is a talented veteran who still has a lot of good baseball left in him. Damon and the Phillies agreed to a 2-year deal this morning.
"Sadly, we can't have the same nine guys starting every single day, and therefore we need some type of bench. Ben Francisco is really the only reliable second string outfielder on the lineup, so I think this was a good move. We look forward to have Damon here, and hopefully he can help us to some more success." Phillies manager Charlie Manuel commented on the signing.
The move came after the Phillies ended yet another stint with Placido Polanco. Polanco lost his starting job very early in the year, and was having a terrible time at the plate. The Phillies, who have back up third baseman Greg Dobbs, thought that if they got rid of Polanco, they would be fine at third, and it would give them an oppurtunity to pick up an outfielder. Dobbs now officially starts at third for the Philles, while Juan Castro is a reliable source off the bench to play when needed.
As for Damon, he is expected to play tonight in Game 2 against Arizona, as starter Jayson Werth will take his first night off.
