May 30th, 2015: Royals @ Cubs
Chicago (AP)-
The Royals can hit.... The Royals can hit.... The Royals can hit.... I won't continue with that but as you might imagine, The Royals can hit. The Royals walked away from game two of the series with 18, that is not a typo 18 hits. They looked just like the team that were the AL Champs last year. Hitting the ball well all throughout the lineup. The Royals also had a quality pitching performance from Chris Young who kept the Cubs off balance and benefited by some good defensive positioning to keep the Cubs from being too strong for him to handle. The game got away from Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks as he could not make it through 5 innings and was pulled from the game after giving up double digit hit numbers. The Cubs look to win their first series since May 8th with game 3 tomorrow.

May 31st, 2015: Royals @ Cubs
Chicago (AP)-
This game was the epitome of the Cubs month of May. The Cubs took the lead early, had a quality pitching performance from their Ace starter but couldn't score enough runs to keep the lead. Lester gave up a home run to tie the game in the 6th inning and the Cubs waste, not one, not two, but three chances to score the winning run after that happened with men on base each inning but failure to even make contact in those situations. In the 12th inning after scoreless frames from both bullpens, the Royals and Christian Colon were able to knock a double into left field that would score the lead run and take the lead. The next pitch got by David Ross and was called a Wild Pitch with two outs, no big deal. The next pitch was a ground ball to Kris Bryant who threw the ball over Anthony Rizzo. So just how the month has gone, two Cubs mental mistakes allowed a second run to score. Then, just as the month has gone, the Cubs got a runner on in Junior Lake, and followed with a double from Addison Russell who has struggled to bring the Cubs within one run. Dexter Fowler then had a base hit which moved Russell to third and the winning run to first base with one out. Anthony Rizzo followed with a double play ball to the 2nd baseman, because of course he did. "This has been the most frustrating stretch of games I can remember in my life. We finish the month of may 10-19, with just 7 home runs in those 29 games...... Seriously? I've never seen numbers this bad."

Down on the Farm
As the Cubs struggle in the big leagues, let's take a look at the up and coming Cubs prospects that may be coming up in the near future. #1. Carl Edwards Jr. RHP, 23, Iowa (AAA) - Edwards has been moved over to the bullpen from the starting Rotation which seems to be the hope that the Cubs find relief pitchers that are capable of going multiple innings, especially seeing as the Cubs relievers are struggling mightily this season. In Iowa, Edwards has thrown 17.1 innings and allowed 20 hits while striking out 25. Look for Edwards to get a bigger role in the Iowa bullpen as pitchers continue their trips up and down to the bigs. #2. Kyle Schwarber, C, 22, Tennessee (AA) - Schwarber has been tearing it up for the Cubs in AA, the most recent #1 pick of the Cubs is only in his first full year of pro baseball and is hitting .287 with 14 home runs and has driven in 38. Things you like to see are that he has only struck out 31 times in 150 at bats and has only committed 1 error behind the plate. #3. Albert Almora, OF, 21, Tennessee (AA) - Almora is in the same lineup as the powerful Schwarber and is likewise destroying AA pitching. Almora is hitting .344 with 9 homers and 30 runs driven in. He has also only struck out 33 times in 180 at bats. Though a troubling sign is that he is only hitting .179 with runners in scoring position. #4. Gleybar Torres, SS, 18, South Bend (A) - Torres is one of the youngest prospects in the Cubs organization. Torres could take some time until he reaches the big leagues but is hitting well in South Bend and may be promoted to Myrtle Beach soon. #5. Billy McKinney, CF, 20, Tennessee (AA) - McKinney is progressing quickly in the same lineup as Almora and Schwarber and Tennessee must be a scary team to pitch against as McKinney is hitting .280 with 1 dinger and 9 runs driven in after 150 at bats. #6. Duane Underwood, SP, 20, Myrtle Beach (A) - Underwood is looking like the player the Cubs had hoped he would be this season and continues to pitch at a high level. Depending on how things shake up he may spend the rest of the year in A ball or may get a late call to AA. #7. Pierce Johnson, SP, 23, Tennessee (AA) - Johnson has pitched 56 innings and has struck out 67. He has only allowed 45 hits through those 56 innings and despite being in the power packed Tennessee lineup is only 2-4 on the season. #8. Jen Ho Tseng, SP, 20, Myrtle Beach (A) - Tseng dominated at the 18-and-under World Championships in the fall of 2012, but his stuff and delivery regressed when he pitched for Taiwan at the World Baseball Classic the following spring. That didn't deter the Cubs from signing him for $1.625 million as part of their 2013 international signing spree. He looked more like his old self during his 2014 pro debut, when he demonstrated the best pitchability in Chicago's farm system. #9. Eloy Jimenez, RF, 18, Eugene (A) - The consensus top-ranked prospect on the 2013 international market, Jimenez landed a $2.8 million bonus as the most expensive of several Cubs big-ticket signings that summer. After he signed, one club official compared him to a 16-year-old version of Jorge Soler. #10. Jake Stinnett, SP, 22, Tennessee (AA) - Stinnett had screws placed in his elbow to repair a stress fracture in high school, which scared off scouts and recruiters. He started at third base for Maryland as a freshman and didn't pitch regularly until his junior year in 2013, when he turned down the Pirates as a 29th-round choice. That decision paid off in a storybook 2014 season in which he pitched a one-hitter and no-hitter in consecutive starts, set a school record with 132 strikeouts while helping the Terrapins set another mark with 40 victories, and signed for $1 million as a second-round pick. Stinnett has pitched 21.1 innings in Tennessee but has given up 27 hits and has an ERA of 6.33. #11. Carson Sands, SP, 20, Eugene (A) - The 2014 Draft worked out according to plan for the Cubs. Without sacrificing talent, they spent their first three picks on player who would sign for less than the assigned value for their slots (Kyle Schwarber, Jake Stinnett, Mark Zagunis), saving the money to overpay for high school pitchers with their next three selections. The first of those arms was Sands, whose $1.1 million was easily the most among fourth-rounders last year. #12. Jeimer Candelario, 3B, 21, Tennessee (AA) - Candelario was recently called up to Tennessee and in 33 games is hitting .254 with 4 long balls and 15 RBI's. #13. Dan Vogelback, 1B, 22, Tennessee (AA) - Vogelbach is also in the star studded Tennessee lineup and is hitting .270 with 5 bombs and 25 rbi's. #14. Justin Steele, SP, 19, Eugene (A) - Another of the mid-round high school pitchers the Cubs paid over-slot bonuses in 2014, Steele got the highest fifth-round bonus in the Draft at $1,000,000. The 139th overall selection, he was the earliest Mississippi prep pitcher taken since the Braves made Matt Butler a second-rounder in 1999. #15. Mark Zagunis, OF/C, 22, Tennessee (AA) - Sense a trend with Cubs hitters being in AA yet? In 25 games since being called up Zagunis is hitting .297 with 0 long balls and 7 RBI's. #16. Victor Caratini, C, 21, Tennessee (AA) - Caratini was called up following an injury to Wilson Contreras. In 5 games he is hitting just .211 with 2 RBI's but this is a small samble size. #17. Corey Black, RHP, 23, Tennessee (AA) - Like Edwards, Black was moved to the bullpen mid season and has already registered 8 saves on the season. Though his inflated ERA may keep him in Tennessee for a while. #18. Dylan Cease, SP, 19, Arizona (Rookie) - One of the hardest-throwing high schoolers in the 2014 Draft, Cease had a chance to go in the first round until he injured his elbow in March. The Cubs still drafted him in the sixth round and paid him $1.5 million, after which he had Tommy John surgery that will sideline him until this summer #19. Jacob Hannemann, LF, 23, Tennessee (AA) - In 29 games this season Hannemann is hitting .270 with 1 dinger and 11 runs knocked in. #20. Rob Zastryzny, SP, 23, Tennessee (AA) - Has pitched 62.2 innings and given up 64 hits. He has struck out 62 and is currently sitting at 4-3. #21. Christian Villanueva, 3B, 23, Iowa (AAA) - Villanueva is the other Cubs 3rd base prospect and is struggling in Iowa only hitting .216 in 125 at bats. #22. Daury Torrez, SP, 21, Tennessee (AA) - Torrez has been working out of the bullpen this year and in 14 games has pitched 14 innings with 6 saves picked up and only given up 16 hits. #23. Eric Jokisch, SP, 25, Iowa (AAA)- In 10 games, Jokisch has picked up 54.1 innings but has only struck out 38 while giving up 63 hits and 32 walks. #24. Paul Blackburn, SP, 20, Tennessee (AA) - In 9 games he has pitched 14 innings in relief and has struck out 8. #25. Kevonte Mitchell, CF, 19, Tennessee (AA) - In 16 games has hit .271 with 2 homers and 13 runs driven in. #26. Trevor Clifton, SP, 19, South Bend (A) - Clifton was extremely raw coming out of a Tennessee high school in 2013, but that didn't deter the Cubs from paying him a $375,000 bonus in the 12th round. He's already making progress with cleaning up his delivery and adding strength, showing glimpses of upside greater than most of the system's pitching prospects. #27. Bijan Rademacher, RF, 23, Tennessee (AA) - In 27 games he has hit .244 with 3 bombs and 14 ribbies. #30. Ivan Pineyro, SP, 23, Tennessee (AA) - In 10 starts, he has pitched 54.2 innings with 57 hits allowed while striking out 60. He is sitting at 3-3. Cubs #28 and #29 prospects did not make the game (Or at least not my roster of the game)

June 1, 2015: Cubs @ Marlins
Chicago (AP)-
Jake Arrieta was phenomenal for the Cubs today, yes he gave up 3 runs, and yes he gave up 8 hits but all three runs were from two Giancarlo Stanton home runs, which are going to happen. Stanton was the lone Marlins offense on the day and that wasn't going to cut it for the Marlins against the, all of a sudden hot hitting, Cubs. The Cubs were led by Miguel Montero, who after a day off hit not one, but two triples, both aided by missed diving attempts by two different Marlin outfielders. The Cubs still haven't hit a home run in quite some time but they seem content with waiting on those and hitting a bunch of base hits. Speaking of whom, Addison Russell has been RED HOT lately with a 6 game hitting streak and bringing his average ever closer to the mendoza line. Post game Roster moves: Cubs Option RF Mike Baxter to Triple A Iowa Cubs Recall RF Matt Szczur from Triple A Iowa

MLB Draft Preview
"That being said, once you get past the boring nerd stuff, you can get to the fun. No, the MLB draft isn’t anything close to riveting television — they don’t even bother to air the second and third days on a network dedicated to nothing but baseball news — but if you know some of the storylines, and get past the monotony of out-of-context highlights and commercial breaks asking you to buy baseball cards of the players who were just drafted, it can be, dare I say, entertaining. Better than reruns of JAG, anyway.
Here’s an important (if unconventional) “best of” list to use while following the 2015 draft. Best prospect with two first names: Dillon Tate, RHP, UC Santa Barbara (4th overall, Texas Rangers) Believe it or not, this was a very competitive competition; if I would have cheated and included Brendan Rodgers—who is the best prospect in the entire draft—he would have taken the prize over Tate, Kyle Tucker, John Harris, Tyler Jay, Trenton Clark, and others. But Tate wins because of his two potential plus-plus pitches and solid-average command, and because, despite his somewhat diminutive stature, he should be able to start in the majors. One does wonder how good the stuff would be if the name was Tate Dillon, however. Prospects who will make you wonder where your youth went: Dazmon Cameron, OF, Eagle’s Landing HS (Ga.); Mariano Rivera III, RHP, Iona Another close, albeit somewhat depressing category. As you likely are aware by now, Cameron is the son of former all-star center fielder Mike Cameron—and yes, that should make you feel old (unless you haven’t heard of Cameron, which should make you feel young). The newer Cameron is a player who doesn’t have a standout tool, but might have four that are solid-average when it is all said and done, and he should be able to stick in center field (though he’s nowhere near the outfielder his dad was). Rivera just retired two years ago, so the fact that his son is eligible for the draft for the third time is somewhat amazing. The son of the greatest closer ever has taken a major step forward this year, sitting 92-95 in some outings with an above-average slider. No, he doesn’t throw The Cutter. Oh, and next year Craig Biggio’s son Cavan will go in the first two rounds. You’ve been warned. Best glasses on a hurler: Carson Fulmer, RHP, Vanderbilt (8th overall, Chicago White Sox) When Fulmer is on the mound, you notice a lot of things. You’ll see two plus pitches, you’ll see a delivery that even toned down is going a mile a minute, and you’ll see as much enthusiasm for pitching as any hurler in the class. But the first thing you should notice is the glasses. Not since Ben Weber have we seen a hurler rock glasses like this. It is a bifocal paradise. Just look! Oh, and then watch a fastball that has as much movement as any I’ve covered. Prospect that you could see pulling a Brandon Finnegan in 2015: Tyler Jay, LHP, Illinois (6th overall, Minnesota Twins) The most tangible thing that could keep this from happening is that he’s rumored to go to Colorado, and I think I feel safe in saying that the Rockies probably aren’t going to make a run in October. If Jay does go to a team with postseason ambitions like the Cubs, Red Sox or, yes, the Twins, Jay has a chance to become a contributor to a big-league team this season. Like Finnegan, the left-hander has two out pitches in a 93-95 mph fastball and hard slider with tilt, and he’ll show an above-average curveball to keep hitters off those pitches as well. Despite pitching predominantly out of the bullpen this year, most believe he’ll be a starter. But if a team were to do what Kansas City did with Finnegan, it could pay a not insubstantial dividend. Best name that will be called Monday: Kyle Funkhouser, RHP, Louisville There are many contenders, but at the end of the day, you can’t beat a name like Kyle Funkhouser. First, it contains the word funk; arguably the most important word you can include in any great name—not including the words prohibited in first-grade classrooms. Second, the name loosely translates in an unknown language to house of funk. Third, it’s the last name of one of the most underrated characters from one of the most underrated sitcoms of the 21st century. Even if you’re not a fan of that show, I’d say that’s pretty, pretty, pretty good. Best name that will be called Tuesday: Skye Bolt, OF, UNC Parents, if you want your kid to be an athlete, name your child Skye Bolt. No, it does not matter if your last name is Goldstein or Higgins or Funkhouser (sorry Kyle), your child’s name shall be Skye Bolt, and he or she shall be glorious. There’s actually a chance he’ll be drafted late on day one, and I’d say that we have to give at least 37 percent credit to the fact that his name is Skye Bolt. Best name that might not be called at all: Sati Santa Cruz, RHP, Sahuarita HS (Ariz.) Because Sati Santa Cruz. Prospect with the most aesthetically pleasing swing: Kyle Tucker, OF Plant HS (Fla.) (5th overall, Houston Astros) Some compare Tucker’s swing to Darryl Strawberry’s. Some compare it to Ken Griffey, Jr. Others have gone so far as to compare it to Ted Williams. Personally, I don’t do comps, but I will agree that although there’s some length into hand movement, it’s a gorgeous swing to watch, as you can see here. Pretty, isn’t it? With an ability to hit to all fields and the likelihood that he’ll add some power, Tucker has as much offensive potential as any prep bat in this year’s class other than Brendan Rodgers. Prospect that everyone’s in love with, and you’ll probably fall in love too: Alex Bregman, SS, LSU (2nd overall, Houston Astros) Do you like your baseball players hard-nosed with a passion for winning? You’ll love Alex Bregman. Do you like your players to be personable and give great interviews? You’ll love Alex Bregman. Do you like middle-infielders with a potential plus hit tool, sneaky power and enough speed and smarts on the bases to steal 20 to 30 bases a year? You’ll love Alex Bregman. Just look at this video of how intense he is; not in a game, but just taking infield! There are certainly prospects with more upside — and that whole “what position are you going to play” thing is certainly a complication — but no matter where he plays, you’re going to fall in love with Alex Bregman." http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/just-a-...t-names-060815 |

Re: 2015 Chicago Cubs --- Road to a Dynasty
Chicago (AP)-
The Cubs so far look like they like two things, the warm weather of Miami and the month of June. Already the Cubs offense looks like they are an entirely different team against the NL East leading Marlins. The Cubs were led by new cleanup man Miguel Montero who is having a whale of a series with the club's first homer in the month and his 3rd triple of the series. Tsuyoshi Wada was not spectacular but he got the job done and Edwin Jackson got the rare three inning save closing the door on the Marlins despite serving up a 3 run bomb to Giancarlo Stanton (His third of the series). The Cubs weren't anything to write home about collecting 10 hits, mostly of the single variety but also drew 6 walks, many against the Miami bullpen. The Cubs officially one their first series since beginning of May and look to make their first sweep of a series since before even then in game 3. A win in game 3 would also put the squad back at .500 on the year.

Re: 2015 Chicago Cubs --- Road to a Dynasty
Chicago (AP)-
The Cubs complete their sweep of the Miami Marlins on the back of two additions to the squad from this season. Jason Hammel went 7 and 2/3 innings before he needed to be pulled in favor of Pedro Strop who came in and struck out Giancarlo Stanton to go to the 9th. Hammel had an answer for everyone in the Marlins lineup except for Michael Morse who homered off of Hammel, not one time but two times in three innings. The other player that carried the Cubs was rookie Kris Bryant who matched Morse by homering not once but twice in the game, both to Right Field to keep the Cubs in the lead. Miguel Montero also homered during the game which was his second of the series. He hit two bombs with 3 triples in three games out of the cleanup spot. Dexter Fowler added two doubles and Addison Russell added to his hit streak and creeping ever so slowly back to the mendoza line with his hard hits seeming to fall easier than before. Post Game Injury Alert: In the 9th inning, Jorge Soler came up lame by spraining his ankle out in right field. Soler will miss a couple of weeks and the Cubs will need to recall Mike Baxter from Iowa to take his spot.
