When do you play the Cardinals next? I want to see a showdown with the league title on the line!

They certainly have a chance as the Mountain West isn't that tough, but we'll see. They do have some tougher games coming up.

vs.
Providence (11-12) vs. #8 West Virginia (21-6)
WVU Coliseum
Morgantown, WV
February 14th, 2027

Providence (11-12, 6-6) gave No. 8 West Virginia (21-6, 10-4) all it could handle, but in the end the Friars fell to the Mountaineers 89-77.

Providence never held a lead after the first few minutes, but the Friars kept the game close throughout as the Mountaineers were never able to build a lead bigger than 15 points. WVU only led by three points at halftime and was never able to extend the lead to double-digits until midway through the second period. After three blowout victories in a row, a close game was a bit of a change for the Mountaineers.

Nevertheless, it was still WVU's fifth consecutive win following their home loss to Louisville on January 27th.

The Friars actually outrebounded the Mountaineers 32-28, but the Mountaineers were very proficient shooting the basketball, both inside and from beyond the arc. WVU was also pesky defensively as the Mountaineers forced 19 Providence turnovers.

Tre Welch led a WVU starting five that saw all five starters score in double-figures. Tre Welch tallied 22 points, six rebounds, three steals, and a pair of blocks. Leandro Summers totaled 15 points and four rebounds while D.C. Montgomery added 15 points, three boards, and three steals. Jud Helms also ended with 10 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Anderson Black had a deceptively good outing as he tied his season-high assist total with 10 to go along with 11 points, three rebounds, and five steals as he tallied a double-double.

Vitor Alujevic led Providence with 22 points and five rebounds. Senior point guard W.M. Fellers paced the offense with 16 points and six assists while Herbert Sutton banged down low to 12 points and eight rebounds. Harding Zordic also added 11 points and four boards.

The Mountaineers only have one game next week as they will travel an hour north along I-79 to Pittsburgh as they will take on the Panthers in the Backyard Brawl.

vs.
#8 West Virginia (22-6) vs. Pittsburgh (18-9)
Petersen Events Center
Pittsburgh, PA
February 20th, 2027

No. 8 West Virginia got all it could handle for the first 30 minutes of the annual Backyard Brawl against the streaking Pittsburgh Panthers (18-9, 8-7 Big East). The Panthers entered the game having won three games in a row, including wins over Louisville and Notre Dame, and looked like they may be well on their way to upsetting the visiting Mountaineers (22-6, 11-4 Big East) as they played the Mountaineers to a dead heat for the first three-quarters of the game. The Panthers and the Mountaineers were tied at 26 points apiece at halftime.

However, the Mountaineers' shooting finally came alive during the middle portions of the second half as the Mountaineers rocketed ahead from the dead heat. In the end, WVU would wind up outscoring the Panthers 47-25 in the second half en route to a 73-51 victory over Pittsburgh.

It is WVU's sixth consecutive victory. The Mountaineers had to look outside of Tre Welch for help as Welch struggled tonight to only six points and five boards. The biggest help came from off the bench as Nile Stevenson had a fantastic outing. The freshman tallied 20 minutes of action and recorded 16 points and five rebounds during his time on the floor, sinking eight of his 13 shot attempts. D.C. Montgomery also had a nice outing as he totaled 15 points, seven rebounds, and three assists while Jud Helms added 12 points and three steals. Leandro Summers was a force to be reckoned with on both ends of the court as he ended with 10 points, three rebounds, and a career-high five steals.

WVU won the turnover battle against the Panthers 19 to six in what could be described as the ultimate deciding factor on the box score.

West Virginia will host St. John's and DePaul next week before closing out the season on the road against Louisville on March 7th.

vs.
St. John's (19-10) vs. #6 West Virginia (23-6)
WVU Coliseum
Morgantown, WV
February 23rd, 2027

As a bubble team, the St. John's Red Storm (19-10, 7-8 Big East) came into this game looking to make a statement win to add to their resume. For a majority of the game, it looked like they had a decent shot at doing just that as they played No. 7 West Virginia (23-6, 12-4 Big East) to a virtual tie until the closing minutes. In the end, talent prevailed, however, as WVU's cast of stars finally got things together to seal a 75-69 victory over the Red Storm.

Tre Welch tallied 16 points and 11 rebounds for WVU. D.C. Montgomery struggled for most of the game, but came up big in the closing minutes as he ended with 17 points, three rebounds, and five assists. Anderson Black also had a very nice outing as he totaled 14 points, four rebounds, four assists, and seven steals (a career-high).

The Mountaineers forced St. John's into 21 turnovers while only committing 10 of their own. In a close game, that huge margin made all the difference in the world.

Junior guard Lanny Hawkins led St. John's in scoring with 13 points while Daon Dalgarn came off the bench to add 10 points.

The Mountaineers will host DePaul on Senior Night on Saturday.

vs.
DePaul (8-21) vs. #7 West Virginia (24-6)
WVU Coliseum
Morgantown, WV
February 27th, 2027

No. 7 West Virginia (24-6, 13-4 Big East) completed the season sweep of the DePaul Blue Demons (8-21, 3-13 Big East) tonight as they defeated DePaul 90-73 on Senior Night. However, just as in their earlier meeting this season in Chicago, the game was closer than most would have probably expected.

DePaul kept the game close until the closing minutes, when WVU finally pulled ahead. The Blue Demons only trailed by a single point at halftime and though they never pulled ahead in the second half, they did keep the lead within single digits for much of it.

D.C. Montgomery led all players in scoring with 26 points, four rebounds, and three assists as he sank a career-best eight three-pointers. Tre Welch tallied a double-double with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and two blocks as did Jud Helms, who ended with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

Antario Silva led DePaul with a team-high 20 points and nine assists. Melvin Nelke added 13 points and three rebounds from off the bench while senior forward Mathew Duffy added 10 points and five rebounds.

The Mountaineers will close out the season next Sunday against Louisville on the road. The Cardinals defeated the Mountaineers 83-76 in their earlier meeting this season in Morgantown on January 27th. The Mountaineers have not lost a game since as they are on an eight-game winning streak.
