Re: Career Coaching Legacy

Nice couple of wins there, 13-8 isn't bad at all.

Aggies Win 3rd Straight

Aggies Win 3rd Straight

Cal State Northridge (13-7, 4-5) @ UC Davis (13-8, 5-4)

February 9, 2008

Davis, CA - The UC Davis Aggies closed out their 3-game home stand the way they started it, with a win. They defeated the Matadors of Cal State Northridge 77-74 after losing 110-96 in their first meeting. The Aggies jumped out to an early lead thanks to their defense and led 44-34 at the break. The second half was a much different story in this game. With Lopez-Low, Boone, and Malik getting into foul trouble and the Aggies' second unit struggling, the Matadors fought their way back into the game and pulled to within 3 before Coach Campbell called a time-out to regroup. The Aggies pulled it together and Vince Oliver and Shane Hanson combined to put the game away with free throws.

"I think we played much better in this game than the score indicated," said Coach Campbell. "They made a great comeback behind Tresvant, but our defense locked down when we needed to. They hurt us pretty bad on the boards and with second chance points, but we did a great job holding them to 0 fast break points. We just need to continue playing the way we've been playing the last 3 games."

UC Davis improves to 14-8 overall, 6-4 in conference play, and 7-2 at home this season. Next, the Aggies travel to Fullerton to play against the Titans (11-10, 6-5) who have won 5 of their last 6, including a 104-101 thriller in their first meeting.

Congrats on the wins over Long Beach State and CSUN. Both Top-25 Mid-Majors. I would think with the way you are playing, you will be in the Mid-Major Top-25 by season end.

UC Davis @ Cal State Fullerton

Titans Beat Down Aggies, Sweep Series

UC Davis (14-8, 6-4) @ CS Fullerton (11-10, 6-5)

February 14, 2008

Fullerton, CA - Valentine's Day was not good to UC Davis as they were embarrassed for most of this game, but pulled it to a respectable 91-78 loss. The reason it was such an out of hand game was the Aggies only 7 of 37 from the field in the first half. 7 OF 37...that's a dreadful 19%. Meanwhile, the Titans shot a red hot 64% from the field and were up 50-21 at the half. This is just not a good match-up for Coach Campbell and the Aggies, as Cal State Fullerton is the first team to sweep a regular season series from Coach Campbell.

The Aggies came out swinging in the second half, though, shooting 21 three pointers, getting to the line more often, and pushing the tempo of the game more in favor of the Titans. The closest UC Davis could get is 12, then it seemed like Junior guard Josh Akognon, the leading scorer in the Big West and the 4th leading scorer in the country, had the answers.

Coach Campbell was extremely disappointed after the loss. "It wasn't looking ahead to Santa Barbara at all. We knew what happened to us last time we played them and I thought we were pretty well prepared. We just came out really flat. It was the absolute WORST first half of basketball I have ever been a part of. These guys better be ready to play in 2 days or else it won't be a pretty rest of the season."

UC Davis drops to 14-9 overall and 6-5 in conference. Their next two games are at home against league-leading UC Santa Barbara (14-9, 9-2) and Cal Poly (12-9, 6-5).

Tough loss

14-9 is still good though, I'm thinking you'll get a bid in the NIT?

UC Davis Bouces Back In Big Way

UC Santa Barbara (14-9, 9-2) @ UC Davis (14-9, 6-5)

February 16, 2008

Davis, CA - UC Davis wanted to put their last game behind them, and they accomplished that and then some. They showed flashes of the fullest potential of the program with a 30-point blowout of 1st place UC Santa Barbara 87-57. The Aggies never trailed the whole game and had strong outings from Oliver, Calegari, Lopez-Low, and Boone.

The Gauchos had the #2 offense in the Big West and #66 nationally, but it was no where to be found. Even though they shot 48% in the first half, 3 of their 5 starters were in foul trouble and sat most of the half. With the league's best overall player Harris on the bench, the Aggies racked up 10 steals and got to the line for 16 free throw attempts. The second half wasn't much different, minus the fact that the Aggies starters were on the bench for the rest of the game after the 13:00 mark of the game. With the bench playing the majority of the second half, Coach Campbell got a chance to see some extended minutes from everyone on the bench.

"This game was big for us," said Coach Campbell. "We came out really aggressive, attacked the basket, and really put pressure on their defense. I was just as surprised about the outcome as much as anyone, especially after the last game, but we came out strong and played well at home tonight. If we can get more consistent, I think we'll be able to make some noise in the conference tournament."

The Aggies improve to 15-9 overall and 7-5 in conference play. They currently sit in 3rd place by a half game and are 2.5 games behind UC Santa Barbara. UC Davis will host a Cal Poly team looking for payback from their first meeting, a 88-71 Aggie win. They will have to contend with the defensive-minded Mustangs, who are the #2 defensive team in the Big West and #60 nationally. They will try to confuse teams with multiple defensive zone looks. The Mustangs also have 3 players averaging over 10 points per game.
