Re: Coach Lee: A Unique Story

Hawaiian Invitational-5th place game
Stan Sheriff Center
Alabama A&M Bulldogs (4-3) vs Princeton Tigers (3-1)
Coach Lee's private pre-game thoughts:

"Our perimeter defense will get a real test today as Princeton will shot a lot of 3's. We need to stay home on their shooters and try to make their shots as tough as possible. I think if we can walk away with 5th place in this tournament, a lot of people will consider that a huge feat considering the field."

Despite knowing how Princeton would play, the Bulldogs didn't appear prepared to begin the game as the Tigers would jump out to a 12-2 lead. The Bulldogs would finally arrive then though and would use the great shooting of Bo Amusa and Cornelius Hester to tie the game at 18. Amusa and Hester would continue their hot shooting for the rest of the half and the Bulldogs would ride them to a 38-32 halftime lead. Amusa and Hester would score 13 apiece for the Bulldogs. Amusa would also have 3 rebounds and 4 assists. The Tigers would be led by Patrick Saunders with 10 points and Dan Mavraides with 9.

The 2nd half saw Cornelius Hester continue his great shooting as he hit back to back 3's to open the half and give the Bulldogs a 12 point lead at 44-32. The Tigers would finally start hitting shots again and would cut the lead to 1 on several occasions, with the last time being at 60-59. However, everytime they made a run to cut the lead to 1, the Bulldogs would answer, most often due to Hester. The Bulldogs would pull away a final time, taking a 70-62 lead and would struggle to make freethrows down the stretch, but would still manage to hold on for a 76-67 victory. Hester would finish the game with 29 points, hitting 7/11 3's. Bo Amusa would be held in check in the 2nd half and would finish the game with 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 7 assists. Adam Young would come on strong in the 2nd half and would finish with 17 points, 8 rebounds for the Bulldogs. The Tigers would be led by Nick Lake with 15 points, Dan Mavraides with 12 points, and Zach Finley with 10 points, 9 rebounds.

Coach Lee's comments:

"After the slow start, we played really well offensively. I'm unhappy with how we allowed them to shoot as we didn't challenge a lot of shots, but we got lucky as they went cold. We played much better defensively in the 2nd half. However, we need to make sure we knock down those freethrows at the end because they could have cost us."

Hawaiian Invitational results:

1st: Marquette Golden Eagles
2nd: #7 Illinois Fighting Illini
3rd: #2 Duke Blue Devils
4th: Oklahoma State Cowboys
5th: Alabama A&M Bulldogs
6th: Princeton Tigers
7th: Arizona State Sun Devils
8th: LSU Tigers

The Alabama A&M Bulldogs (5-3) now have a week and a half off to prepare for the UAB Blazers (6-3).

The matchup between Alabama A&M and UAB has earned a little more meaning across the state of Alabama. Ingo Payton, a 7'1", 261lbs Center, from Nashville, TN has chosen UAB over Alabama A&M. The leaves Coach Lee hungry to show that her team would have been the better choice.

Re: Coach Lee: A Unique Story

Considering that Alabama A&M is in the SWAC, it doesn't surprise me about the schedule. The conference teams always seem to have a brutal OOC schedule. The Hawaiian Invitational is a great example. Except for the Princeton Tigers, the other six schools are all from power conferences. Your team should have a really good RPI, as far as small conference teams are concerned, as your major & power conference opponents continue their schedules.

You're doing a good job with the Bulldogs so far. Keep up the good work with the pre & post game comments.

Re: Coach Lee: A Unique Story

Alabama A&M Bulldogs (5-3) @ UAB Blazers (6-3)
Bartow Arena
Coach Lee's private pre-game thoughts:

"We played well in Hawaii and finished 5th in the tournament. Now here we are in Birmingham getting ready to face a pretty good UAB team. The Blazers have a pretty good shooting guard in George Drake. His numbers aren't spectacular, but he leads the team in scoring at 11.4 points per game. Unfortunately, if close out on him, the rest of the team is talented enough to beat us so it's more a case of picking our poison. We can let him shoot and see if he can lead the his team to victory over us or we can focus on him and make the rest of the team more dangerous."

The Blazers started out pounding the ball inside Cameron Cooper and got 3 quick points out of it, but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs would jump out to a 9-3 lead. George Drake would make his presence felt as he would catch fire and lead the Blazers to a 30-29 halftime lead. Drake would lead all scorers with 12 points in the half while Elijah Millsap would chip in 6 points for the Blazers. Bo Amusa would lead the Bulldogs with 7 points. The real surprise was the fact the both Cornelius Hester and Jabari DeShields were both scoreless in the half, but the Bulldogs were still very much in the game.

The 2nd half would start out terribly for the Bulldogs. They would miss their first 5 shots while the Blazers would hit 4 of 6 shots, including 3 3-pointers. Trailing 41-29, the Bulldogs finally started looking like the team we've seen all season. Hester would finally knock down a few shots and DeShields would force turnovers and find ways to get to the basket. Probably the most impressive play of the game saw DeShields split 3 defenders on his way to the hoop, making the basket, and getting fouled in the process. Despite the renewed vigor of the team, the Bulldogs would only get as close as 4 points. George Drake would continue his great shooting in the 2nd half and the Blazers would get an great game out of Elijah Millsap and the combination would keep the Blazers from falling apart. The Blazers would win the game 65-56. Jabari Deshields would score 12 points in the 2nd half to lead the Bulldogs in scoring. Bo Amusa would finish the game with 9 points. As a team, the Bulldogs would have just 21 rebounds. George Drake would lead all scorers with 22 points and Elijah Millsap would finish with 18 points, 8 rebounds. The Blazers would pull down 29 rebounds.

Coach Lee's Comments:

"We came in with a good gameplan, or I thought it was a good one anyway, and we didn't execute it quite as well as I'd hoped we would. Drake and Millsap played great games for UAB and we couldn't score enough points to keep up with them. We're lucky we were as close as we were. We had some chances and toward the end and just couldn't convert, if we convert on those, maybe we're looking at a win here instead of a 9 point loss."

The Alabama A&M Bulldogs (5-4) head to Winston-Salem, NC to take on the Winston-Salem State Rams (5-2, 1-0) in Lawrence Joel Veteran's Memorial Coliseum Annex.

Re: Coach Lee: A Unique Story

Recruiting News:

Felton Modica, a 6'11", 225lbs center out of Chicago, IL has signed with the Alabama A&M Bulldogs for next season. Felton is a 1-star recruit. He averaged 4.3 points and 2 rebounds a game for the Midwesters out of the Midwest ABL.

Coach Lee on Felton:

"I'll be honest, Felton wasn't our first choice or even our 2nd or 3rd choice, but now that he's comitted, we'll do everything we can to make him a contributor on next year's team."

Colin Callier, a 7'1", 261lbs center out of Montgomery, AL turned down an offer from Alabama A&M and chose to attend Samford University next season. Colin is rated #328 overall and #20 for his position. He averaged 8.8 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game for Hot Ballin' out of the Southeast ABL last season. Rumor has it that Colin was Coach Lee's top choice.

Re: Coach Lee: A Unique Story

Alabama A&M Bulldogs (5-4) @ Winston-Salem State Rams (5-2, 1-0)
Lawrence Joel Veteran's Memorial Coliseum Annex

Coach Lee's private pre-game thoughts:

"Well, we played well against UAB and came up short. The Rams have a good record here early in the season and we know we can't overlook them. Their schedule is nowhere near as tough as ours, but to be 5-2, you still have to go out and earn victories."

This game would be a disaster for the Alabama A&M Bulldogs. Things looked promising at the start as they would hold a 7-3 lead and Cornelius Hester appeared to be in the zone early on. Things would turn ugly quick though. After holding the early lead, Alabama A&M would give up a huge run and fall behind 43-13 going into the half. Not a lot of bright spots for the Bulldogs obviously, but Cornelius Hester did have 9 points. For the Rams, Ricky Bolton had 9 points and Brandon Hobbs had 8. The Rams out-rebounded the Bulldogs 23-11 in the half.

You wouldn't think that things could get worse for the Bulldogs in the 2nd half, but somehow they managed to. The Bulldogs offense actually looked somewhat better, but the Rams just wouldn't miss. The end result? A 95-47 victory for the Rams. The Rams would hit 14 of 22 3-pointers and would also dominate the boards, out-rebounding the Bulldogs 39-25. Ricky Bolton would score 26 points while Marcus Wells and Andrew Jackson would each score 14 apiece for the Rams. The Bulldogs would be lead by Cornelius Hester with 20 points and Adam Young with 9 points, 10 rebounds.

Coach Lee's comments:

"This was a horrible game for us. They dominated us in every way possible. I know we're tired from being on the road all the time, but we have to put forth a better effort than we did tonight. This was especially tough for me tonight as my dad was in the stands watching us get destroyed. We have a lot of work to do before our next game and not a lot of time to do it as Auburn is in just a few days."

The Alabama A&M Bulldogs(5-5) head to Auburn Arena to take on the Auburn Tigers (6-2). Coach Lee is hoping that she can remain undefeated against the SEC.

Re: Coach Lee: A Unique Story

Modica is not the most talented player, but he will bring some size to your team at least.
