Iona Tops Delaware, 76-58

-NEW ROCHELLE, NY
Iona used two 12-0 runs to pull away from Delaware Friday night at Hynes Athletic Center. The Gaels led 15-3 four minutes into the game, blitzing the Blue Hens from Delaware with an effective full-court press. In the second half, after Delaware tied the game at 40 with a run of its own, Scott Machado and Kyle Symth drained back-to-back threes to re-open the lead to six. The Blue Hens hung around until the 3:00 minute mark, when Machado and co. put the finishing touches on the game-clinching run with a 12-point spurt to open up a 69-54 lead. Both teams shot well from the floor, with Machado tallying 15 for Iona. Symth added 12 for the Gaels, who trailed 2-0 in the game's opening minute but never trailed the rest of the way. Alphonso Dawson led Delaware with 15 points, while Jawan Carter chipped in 14 and Hakim McCullar added a career-high 12. The Hens were plagued by foul trouble throughout the game, particularly when starting forward Kevin McNeil picked up his third at the 12:32 mark of the first half.

Asked about his thoughts on the outcome, Delaware coach Jon Fendler expressed some frustration with his team's uneven and spastic play:

"Our effort at the end of the first half and the first several minutes of the second was great, but I don't know why we couldn't play like that for the rest of the game. We had some foul trouble which definitely hurt, but we were doing a nice job working through it. McCullar played his best game yet, and I really liked the way Brian Johnson contributed at the end of the first half when we cut the lead to 7 from 15 or 16. Better than the Temple game overall, but we have a long, long way to go in becoming a really competitive team."

Delaware will host play its first Colonial Athletic Association game Sunday against Towson, while Iona has a week off before opening its MAAC slate against Loyola MD

Buboltz Decision Down to the Wire

Special to RIVALS.com
-Sources inside both the Delaware and Fairfield basketball programs tell Rivals that Andrew Buboltz, a 3-star center from All Hallows High School in New York City, has informed the respective coaching staffs that he will be making his decision shortly after midnight Sunday, the earliest a 2010 recruit can commit to a school. The two programs have been the front-runners for Buboltz' services since he opened his recruiting, and all indications are that the two remain nearly neck-and-neck, though a report last week on a Fairfield message board claimed his committment to the Stags was a done deal. Siena and Seton Hall also expressed interest, though both have backed off and did not offer scholarships. Check back after midnight Sunday for answers regarding all early signing information

Towson Stifles Delaware in CAA Opener

-NEWARK, DE
In the conference opener for both teams, the Towson Tigers (5-1, 1-0) defeated the Delaware Blue Hens, 68-48, at the Bob Carpenter Center on Monday night. Leading the way for the Tigers was Tony Franklin with 19 points. Isaiah Pillmore added 16 in the winning cause. Towson led by 7 at halftime, but the Blue Hens (2-3, 0-1) tied the game on three different occassions. The Tigers answered with an 8-0 run from which Delaware never recovered, and took advantage of a frazzled Blue Hen squad to run up the final margin in the last few minutes. The Tigers shot 44% from the field, while Delaware managed a meager 27%. Jawan Carter was high scorer for Delaware with 14, while Alphonso Dawson and Brian Johnson added 11 apiece.

Delaware coach Jon Fendler refused to take questions after the game, but vehemently assured reporters that his team would suffer the consequences of such "a flat-out, piss-poor effort."

UD has a quick turnaround, playing host to Albany from the America East conference wednesday night. Towson resumes its non-conference slate with a quick trip to Philadelphia Thursday night when it takes on Temple.

Buboltz Becomes a Stag

Rivals.com
- 3-Star Center Andrew Buboltz (All Hallows HS, NYC) has chosen to play for Coach Eddie Wilson at Fairfield University. Speculation was rampant in the past several weeks that Buboltz was between the Stags and the University of Delaware, telling both institutions that he would be ready to announce immediately following commencement of the early signing period. Delaware Coach Jon Fendler wished Buboltz success at Fairfield, but said that the Blue Hens have other options on the table. Last week, Fendler offered scholarships to 6'5 SF Mack Shipp (3*, Athens GA) and 6'11 C Kashieff Platt (#10 C, Buffalo NY). Fendler hopes that both players will make their decisions within the next few days.

Carter's 26 Drive Delaware to Victory

NEWARK, DE
Jawan Carter poured in a season-high 26 points to lead Delaware (3-3, 0-1) to a 69-59 home victory over Albany. Despite not making a three-pointer, Carter still managed to come within two points of his career high, slashing through the Albany defense with repeated success. His backcourt mate, Alphonso Dawson, added 12 in the win, while freshman Kevin McNeil contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds for his first career double-double. Delaware led by 13 at halftime, and the Danes were never able to get any closer than eight in the second half. Will Harris led the Albany attack with 19 points.

UD Coach Jon Fendler was pleased with the effort, remarking that the team felt humiliated by the severity of the 68-48 loss to Towson on Monday night:

"This was a nice win for us. We shared the ball well, everyone contributed at some point, and Jawan showed his playmaking and scoring ability from the opening tip. We'll fly out early tomorrow morning for the Drake Tournament, and I expect us to bring this level of intensity with us to the Midwest."

Delaware Cruises Past Chicago State

DES MOINES, IA
Alphonso Dawson scored 21 points and Jawan Carter added 13 as Delaware defeated Chicago State 67-55 in the semi-finals of the four-team Drake Regency Challenge in Des Moines. The Blue Hens jumped out to a 22-9 lead midway through the first half and were never threatened the rest of the way. Chicago State shot 3-20 from three-point range, and struggled to find an offensive rythym in a game that produced 29 turnovers. Damian Windham led the Wolves with 10 points.

In the other semi-final, Jackson State defeated UT-Pan American, 69-58. The championship game will take place tomorrow night, and will tip off approximately 25 minutes after the third place game concludes-
