UC RIVERSIDE COLLAPSES, DROPS BIG WEST OPENER TO PACIFIC, 52-35

Jan. 3, Stockton CA – UC Riverside lost steam literally in the second half scoring an embarrasing 13 points, to drop the Big West opening game to Pacific at the Spanos Center, 52-35. The Highlanders were on top at the half, 22-16, but could not muster their nerves and the energy of the host Tigers. For Coach Raymond Rose, it is time to make adjustments this early in the Conference.

Freshman Michael Nunnally was superb in the slot scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds but “Player of the Game” honor went to Solomon HorseChief. The senior guard from Oklahoma City ran rings around the Highlander defense for 11 points mostly in the second half about the same time the US Riverside guns went completely silent. Terrell Smith added 10 points and 7 boards as the Tigers outrebounded and outhustled the Highlanders, 38-33. Charles Jim-George carried the fight for UC Riverside with 12 points. Chris Johnson had an unforgettable night and shot blanks all through the night with 0-10 from the field and 0-7 from the arc. Larry Cunningham had 5 turnovers and to add to his futility, fouled out with 2:14 left in the game. The 35-point output was the Highlanders’ lowest this season and Rose has to find ways to patch things up before the going gets really rough when UC Riverside goes to UC Davis tomorrow to play the Aggies.

In the only other Big West action, Cal State Poly lost at home to Cal State Northridge, 55-63. Jonathan Heard led the Matadors with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Calvin Chitwood made 15 while Jermaine Smith had 7 markers and 10 boards. Dawin Whiten was the Mustangs’ top scorer with 14. Titus Shelton had a double-double night with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Re: Raymond Rose Legacy

UC RIVERSIDE SUFFERS HEARTBREAKING LOSS TO UC DAVIS, 67-64

Jan. 4, Davis CAVince Oliver shot from 25-feet out with 2 seconds left to break a tied ballgame and sent UC Riverside reeling to its second defeat in as many games in the Big West Conference, 67-64. For the Highlanders it has become the pattern, they lead at the half, this time at 30-22, then wither down at crunchtime.

But this time it was different, UC Riverside fought back after they lost the lead and trailed by 10 midway in the second half. Larry Cunningham almost singlehandedly brought the Highlanders back to life and eventually took the upperhand at 54-53. Then it was a see-saw battle as the lead changed hands three times. B.J. Visman missed the go ahead basket time down to 35 seconds, then David Carter found Oliver on the right elbow.

Shane Hanson who led the game in scoring with 16 points was “Player of the Game”. Center Michael Boone, Big West’s tallest at 7-2, had 13 points and 8 rebounds while Oliver had 10. Visman led the Highlanders with 13 points, Chris Johnson had 11 points and 8 rebounds. Cunningham and Charles Jim-George shot 10 apiece. Next up for UC Riverside is tough Cal State Fullerton (7-3) at the Student Recreation Center on January 7.

In the other Big West game, UC Santa Barbara mauled Long Beach St., 78-61. Chris Devine had 20 points and 13 rebounds while Big West scoring leader Alex Harris added 14 for the Gauchos. Greg Plater led the 49ers with 20 points.

Re: Raymond Rose Legacy

Raymond Rose: "Cal State Fullerton is a tough nut to crack, the guys need someone to depend on. I decided to start Charles Jim-George in the 3 position. Aaron Scott has been inconsistent lately and Jim-George needs more minutes.

"I will devise more pick and roll plays for Larry Cunningham, really hope the inside guys can step up against the Titans at home."

Meanwhile in other Big West action, Cal State Northridge racks up its second conference win against UC Santa Barbara. Calvin Chitwood led the game with 16 points. Jonathan Heard made 15 while Jermaine Smith grabbed 11 boards for the Matadors. The Gauchos were led Ivan Elliott with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Long Beach St. broke in the win column with an overtime win over Cal Poly. Greg Plater made 11 points while Brian Freeman plucked 12 rebounds for the 49ers. Titus Shelton scored a game-high 15 for the Mustangs and Dreshawn Vance grabbed 11 boards.

CAL STATE FULLERTON ROUTS UC RIVERSIDE, 72-52

Jan. 7, Riverside CA – Cal State Fullerton sent UC Riverside to the bottom of the Big West Conference with a masterful 72-52 rout in front of the home crowd at the Student Recreation Center.

The Titans asserted their superiority at the paint and were led by back-up center 7’2 Adam Thomas and Andrew Green as they won the battle at the boards, 41-21. It was Cal State Fullerton’s second straight win and UC Riverside’s third loss in as many games.

Titan 6th man Marcio Lassiter was the evening’s leading scorer with 16 points and took “Player of the Game” honors. Frank Robinson made 11 while Green had 9 markers and grabbed 9 rebounds. Thomas was the game's top rebound man with 11 boards. Chris Johnson led the Highlanders with 11. The decision to start Charles Jim-George backfired as Jim-George picked up two early fouls. UC Riverside will take a week rest then plunge back to action to host undefeated Cal State Northridge (2-0) on January 16.

Re: Raymond Rose Legacy

UC RIVERSIDE NAILS ONE AT HOME, BEATS CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE, 78-71

Jan. 16, Riverside CA – UC Riverside nailed its first Big West Conference victory by beating Cal State Northridge, 78-71, at the Student Recreation Center. Cal State Northridge was coming off a woeful 2-game losing streak after winning its first two conference games and was visibly tired. The Highlanders left them shaken and sent them to their third consecutive defeat.

UC Riverside led at the half, 37-35, then went on a scoring spree as they took advantage of the Matadors’ slow transition defense. Larry Cunningham ran the breaks while Chris Johnson and Cleavon Barlow finished. Cal State Northridge was down by 17 middle of the final half but suddenly went alive. Jonathan Heard together with Deon Tresvant led a Matador rally to draw close by 5 points. After a missed free throw by B.J. Visman following an intentional foul, Tresvant scored on a 3-pointer to move Cal State Northridge closer to 2 with time down to 58 seconds. However on the return play Cunningham drove by two defenders and sank a 5-foot floater to give the Highlanders a 5-point advantage. Visman was sent back to the foul line but this time sank both free throws to seal the deal.

Johnson led the Highlanders with 16 points and was “Player of the Game”. Cunningham and Visman both had 13 while Barlow added 11. Severin Gates had 9 rebounds. Tresvant had 4 treys and finished a game-high 19 points. Heard added 16 markers and grabbed 7 boards. Injured Matador point man Josh Jenkins who leads Big West in assists showed up but did not play.

Meanwhile, Pacific remained undefeated in Big West by routing Cal State Fullerton, 73-47. Steffan Johnson shot a game-high 20 points. Terrell Smith had 15 and Michael Nunnally made 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Josh Akognon led the Titans with 14.

UC Irvine defeated UC Davis, 58-43, for its first conference win. 6’6 Adam Rodenburg used his speed against big Aggie center Michael Boone to lead the Anteaters with 14 points. Chuma Awaji added 10. Kevin Bland and Darren Fells grabbed 11 and 10 rebounds respectively as UC Irvine won the battle at the boards, 36-26. Vince Oliver led the Aggies with a game-high 17 points.
