Sacramento State's Vinnie McGhee drives in for a slam dunk
(Greeley, CO) Sacramento State cruised to a 87-62 road victory over the hapless Northern Colorado Bears. The Hornets played well on both ends of the court, shooting 50% from the field, while limiting the Bears to 35.2%.
As in their previous game, the Hornets got strong performances from the starting backcourt of Vinnie McGhee (14 pts on 6-7 shooting, 7 assists) and Loren Leath (15 pts). SF Bradley Cannon came off the bench to lead Sacramento State in scoring with 17 points. Sophomore guard Monice Garrett was the high scorer for the Bears (16 pts), while PF Jabril Banks pullled down 17 rebounds.

Bobcats' Freshman PF Alvin Mascoll scores 2 on a turnaround jumper in OT
(Bozeman, MT) Sacramento State knew they had a steep mountain to climb when starting PG Vinnie McGhee picked up his second foul just 4 minutes into the game against the Bobcats. With McGhee on the bench, the game quickly got out of hand, and the Hornets trailed 59-37 at halftime. The Bobcats shot an amazing 70% from the field in the first half. A furious rally by the Hornets in the second half, capped off by SF Lavelle Keita's 3-pointer from the corner with 7 seconds left in regulation pushed the game into overtime. That shot (capping a 10-2 run) could have won the game for the Hornets, if Keita hadn't missed 2 free throws after being fouled with 49 seconds left.
After McGhee hit the first shot in overtime (a 3-pointer) to give Sacramento State a 93-90 lead, the Bobcats seized control of the game with an 11-2 run. Montana State's starting guards James Hennessey and Phil Friesen both hit 3-pointers during the run. Hennessey (5.1 ppg) and Friesen (4.8 ppg) came into the game averaging less than 10 points total per game, but combined to score 50 for the Bobcats. Coach K said "The scouting report said the strength of their team was in the post with Mbunga and Mascoll, but once the guards got hot, we couldn't do anything to shut them down." The duo combined to go 17-25 from the field, and 14-19 from the charity stripe.
In spite of 16 rebounds by Kammron Ravello, Sacramento State was outrebounded by the Bobcats 46-34. Loren Leath led all scorers with 30 points, but his shooting was erratic (10-26, 4-17 3pt) throughout. Lavelle Keita scored 23, and Andre Souchu came off the bench to score 17 for the Hornets.

Thanks, I'm going to try to get in a bunch of games this weekend. I'll be disappointed if we don't win the reg season championship, since our OVR team rating is the best in conference. But you never can tell how freshmen are going to perform in clutch situations.

Thanks for the compliment! I have no doubt at some point I'll end up simming some of the games like in my putrid 1st season at SacSt (just to speed up progress in getting to a major or power conference). But for now, I'm playing them all since this team actually has some talent.
If anyone notices some of my game recaps occurring pretty close together, its not because I'm simming games. I like to play several games in a row, and just use my digital camera to grab the box scores, highlights, & even the play summary screen so I can recall significant scoring runs. Then later on, even a week or two later, I'll upload the pics to my PC & write up the game summaries.

Hornets PF Raphael Rios scores 2 of his game-high 20 points
(Sacramento, CA) Ahead 52-48 with 4:55 remaining in the game, Sacramento State used a 9-0 run to pull away and defeat Idaho State 71-58 on Wednesday night. Up until that point, the game was hotly contested, with no team leading by more than 7. One big reason for the victory was the Hornets' dominance on the glass, as they outrebounded the Bengals 35-21. Another reason was a strong team shooting performance (52.2% FG).
With freshman center Kammron Ravello on the bench with early foul trouble, fellow freshman Raphael Rios decided to assert himself more on offense. Rios scored a season-high 20 on 6-of-8 shooting, adding 8 points from the charity stripe (8-10 FT). Freshman guard Andre Souchu scored 15 points off the bench for the Hornets on 5-of-7 shooting. Small forward Steve Anderson led Idaho State in scoring with 15. The Big Sky's leading scorer, center Lucas Steijn was held to only 5 points, far below his 19.7 ppg average.
