Man tough loss there. Hope you get a better shooting effort from your off-guards next time out.

Of all the games, I figured the two against UVSt would be easy wins. But I guess its not surprising for a team with 5 freshmen & a soph juco transfer to sometimes struggle on the road.

I should've done it already, but before conference play begins, I'll post the team rankings for the Big Sky. Surprisingly, Sacramento St. has the #1 OVR rating. Guess that can happen with a good recruiting class with 6 new players. Should be interesting -- could we go from worst to 1st?

Recruiting Update

The Hornets had a week with no games on the schedule to recuperate from the tough loss to Utah Valley State. It also gave the coaching staff a chance to complete a few more recruiting trips than usual.

Unfortunately, there's nothing that encouraging to report for the week. Coach K made his 3rd visit to see local 6'10" PF Rubin Archibald, who was offered a scholarship 3 weeks ago but hadn't shown much interest. The day after the visit, St.Mary's College offered him a scholarship, and it was obvious his signing there was inevitable. We withdrew our offer.

Assistant coach Pearce Benton made 3 scouting trips in search of SGs. While 2 of those players were not being seriously pursued by other teams, they didn't have the skill set we're looking for. The only one that does is a regional recruit from Ventura (6'2" Clifton Jameson) that has very strong interest in some bigger schools (San Diego St., USC, Utah, and Loyola Marymount) and a top priority of playing at a big school. Nevertheless, we offered him a scholarship, because the pickings are slim among the SGs. His interest in playing with the Hornets is pretty low at 54%.

The hope is that we can change his mind, or he gets a scholarship offer relatively soon from another school so we can pull ours and look at signing one of the less talented SGs. The danger of targeting a player whose goals don't align with your school is that the recruiting process can linger on for a long time, the player eventually signs elsewhere, and its too late to find someone else.

What are we looking for in a SG? Average to above average shooter, with good ball handling skills, who won't be a liability on the defensive end. Its not that easy to find among the 3-star recruits that don't already have offers, and we don't expect to have the good luck to sign a 4-star SG two years in a row.

We usually aren't that picky about who we sign, but having 7 or 8 solid players returning next season gives us that freedom.

We also made an offer to a 3-star regional PF we spotted in the ABL (6'9, 228lbs Rashid Slaughter) who has even less interest (42%) in us than Jameson. He's not as close to signing elsewhere (UNLV is tops at around 70%), and his top priority is feeling wanted. We're currently #5 on his list but hopefully we move up after a few future visits.

The Hornets continue to be #1 on PG Manny Welch's list. However, its a concern that his interest level is still fairly low (72%) after 3 visits by Coach K, and Loyola Marymount appears to be gaining some ground. The good news is they still haven't offered him a scholarship.

Season #2, Game 5: Nov 26, 2008

Kammron Ravello scores on a hook shot

(Sacramento, CA) Sacramento State rebounded nicely from their disappointing loss to Utah Valley St., defeating Colorado State 87-56. The Hornets put together their first solid defensive effort of the season, switching from their usual man-to-man defense to a 1-3-1 matchup zone for most of the game. They held the Rams to 37.7% shooting from the field.

The Hornets played a complete game, shooting 51.8% (28-54, 8-18 3pt), and outrebounded the Rams 40-25 with a whopping 13 offensive boards. Five different Hornets pulled down 5 or more rebounds each, led by C Kammron Ravello's 10. Just as impressive, Sacramento State shot 37 free throws in the game. The only weak spot was that they missed 14 of them.

Senior SG Loren Leath suffered a bruised knee in the first half, and was kept off the court for the remainder of the game. He's expected to be day-to-day for the next few days. The freshmen trio of Ravello, SG Andre Souchu, and SF Lavelle Keita combined for 50 points. Freshman SG Kamarr Waters (11 points) was the only player to score in double figures for the Rams.

Nov 29, 20081ST2NDSCORE
Sacramento State (3-3)313768
#7 Michigan State (5-2)405999
Michigan State SF Raymar Morgan

(East Lansing, MI) Michigan State used an amazing 51-23 run over the last 11:45 of the second half to crush Sacramento State 99-68. Coach K said "We cut the lead down to 48-45 and thought we had a chance, but it was like they flipped a switch. Suddenly we were the Washington Generals and they were the Harlem Globetrotters. They were just unstoppable."

It didn't help that the Hornets turned the ball over a season-high 15 times. The performance of their shooting guards was particularly dismal, as Andre Souchu and Loren Leath combined to make just 5 of 23 shots from the field (1-14 3pt) with 8 turnovers. Souchu has at least been versatile this season, spending time at both the point and small forward positions.

SG Chris Allen led the way for the Spartans with 26 points, as Michigan State's entire starting lineup scored in double figures.
