A day after our lost against Rowland I found myself thinking it over as I hung out in the Tigers Hall after school along with a couple of friends. It was one of those games were I would put the blame all on myself; their point guard was putting in work as I defended him and only on rare occasions I could actually stop him eventually came to the point where he was scoring on consecutive possessions. When we could've actually came back and won the game in the final minutes our whole team began to choke; nobody was ever open, especially Loren who we always depended on for three pointers and Anthony was wasting time on the clock by dribbling all around the court . . . That lost dubbed us to 9-3 with two games remaining before we pack up and end the J.V. season since there isn't any post season tourney. Luckily I was also on the varsity squad so the season wouldn't be over for me and Anthony. Only bad part was that we were both sitting on the bench more than anyone else.
I regained my focus towards my friends who sat around the circular table by the recreation portion of the Hall. I realized they were discussing the algebra test we had been assigned for tomorrow in Mrs. Beem's class. I didn't know if I just wasn't giving my complete effort at school or if it was that this school was extremely hard but I was ready for summer so I could finally get out of here for a couple months.
I saw Alexis as I looked around so I left the table to go talk to her. Lately, she had been a little angered at me claiming we didn't 'spend enough time with each other'. It was certainly true but I always referred to basketball when she brought it up . . . "So we're fine at this point right?" I asked as we walked around.
"Are you kidding me? We're not 'fine'!" She says immediately after my question. "I have other dudes I'm closer than to you! It's crazy."
"The hell, then date them . . . I'm serious about basketball, it's what I've been doing for years, it's a commitment. Both the varsity and JV season is almost over so that we'll be able to spend time until summer comes. I mean - what else could I do?" I think back at what I had just said and I quickly regret the first sentence.
"I don't know." She walks away obviously irritated and I stand there and watch her as she goes towards her friends. In the moment, I hear my intercom announcements signal on.
"Jannis Canterfield, please report to Mr. Fred's [JV Basketball coach] office. I repeat, Jannis Canterfield, please report to Mr. Fred's office."
