Welcome to Memphis Jason Thompson

By: Mac Trammell
Jason_Thompson.jpg

To fill the void at starting center, Brandan Wright will fill in, and to fill in the hole left by Wright, the Memphis front office has decided to put together a 10-day contract for veteran Jason Thompson.

Thompson has played for now 9 years in the NBA and has done very little for his prior teams. After being drafted number 12 in 2008 he started out on a positive track averaging about 12 points and 8 rebounds in his first two seasons, while only missing a total of 7 games.

Eventually Boogie was drafted, Carl Landry signed and Jason Thompson was dropped down to back up power forward where he got about 24 minutes a game. For the next 6 seasons Thompson would purely be a role player for lottery team.

A little more than a year ago, he was traded to the 76ers who waived him, then claimed off of waivers by the Warriors. After playing some games with reserve minutes, Thompson was let go and then signed by the Raptors who needed an extra big man to make their playoff run.

As you may be able to tell, I don't have the fondest opinions of Jason Thompson. He is an old big man with a below average mid-range jump shot and mediocre rebounder at his best. Last year he started to shoot threes at a 33% mark, so I'm hoping Coach keep him in the post for this short stretch we have to go through. His porous defense is not really our style and he doesn't have length like Brandan Wright.

I do understand we weren't going to get a solid back up center like Wright out of free agency or else every other team would have snatched those centers. We could have gotten veteran center Chris Kaman who knows a thing or two about making the playoffs and winning games and playing some grit-and-grind-defense.

Additionally, Joel Anthony, who is one of the best defensive big man, could have been chosen. Although he has virtually no offensive game, he is a tough guy that does not give up and has championship DNA.

All in all, I really hope this 10 day stretch goes quickly and that Gasol can get back on the floor. No hate at GM, Jeff Williams, but this is not his best move thus far.

Hopefully Thompson and the bench look something like this:

Rookie Goes Down

Rookie Wade Baldwin suffers from Torn Left MCL this Friday, Out 1-2 Months

After Wednesday's blowout of the Washington Wizards, 127-103, rookie point guard, Wade Baldwin, suffered from excruciating pain in his leg. Upon further check ups and MRI's, it was apparent that Baldwin had torn his left MCL. Due to Baldwin being a rookie, the team has decided to not push the time table and to let him recover for some time between 1 and 2 months.

During this time, Baldwin will be working out with trainer Danny Brown to heal his leg efficiently. He will continue to put work into his jumpsuit and keep watching game film. Baldwin's commitment and love for the game are key factors as to why he is considered one of the more promising rookies from this draft class.

In 16.2 minutes, Baldwin was averaging 7.9 points, 1.6 rebounds, and an impressive 5.2 assists all of of the bench. This is on 47% shooting from the field and 39.5% from three. With his early success from the bench, the Grizzlies hope that Baldwin can back Conley up until he is out of his prime, which Baldwin will fill in at starter at that point.

Instead of looking around the league when Marc Gasol went down about a week ago, Memphis GM, Jeff Williams, moved Andrew Harrison from a reserve role to the back up point guard. This is Harrison's first year in the NBA and he has played three games this season. His contributions against Atlanta back on November 2 where he scored 9 points, had 4 assists, and 4 steals with no turnovers helped Memphis come back.

This upcoming week the Grizzlies will be facing off against Washington on the road, Golden State at home, New Orleans on the road, and the Lakers on the road.
