Leonard scores 32 as Spurs blowout Celtics 114-98
BOSTON, MA -- Ever since the
Boston Celtics emerged from the All-Star break, the only team they've beaten with a winning record are the
Toronto Raptors. Every other playoff caliber team they have faced ended with the Celtics losing the game. In this one, forward
Kawhi Leonard of the San Antonio Spurs scored 32 points, powering his team to victory.
Celtics forward Gordon Hayward, who scored 17 points, faces off against Spurs forward Davis Bertans.
Leonard was not alone though, as
LaMarcus Aldridge and
Steven Adams played a role in San Antonio's big win as well. Aldridge had 22 points on a very efficient 9-of-13 shooting, while Adams had a double-double with 13 points and a season-high 16 rebounds. The starters also had support from their bench with
Dejounte Murray scoring 12 points and
Rudy Gay finishing with 15.
Spurs center Steven Adams had 13 points and 16 rebounds before fouling out in the fourth quarter.
Adam's aforementioned season-high in rebounds helped the Spurs dominate the boards. The Celtics, who came into the game leading the NBA in rebounds, didn't do a good job on the boards in this game. Celtics center
Dewayne Dedmon led the team with seven rebounds. Big man
Al Horford only collected four boards for the entire game.
The Celtics could do little to stop LaMarcus Aldridge who finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds.
Even the Celtics 3-point shooting couldn't save them from falling to Spurs. San Antonio only made eight of their 3-point attempts with Leonard making half of those shots. The Celtics were 15-of-34 on 3-pointers for the game and 8-of-20 in the second half. Their overall shooting in the second half was not as good as the Celtics only converted 39 percent of their field goal attempts. Horford and
Jaylen Brown were two of the players that shot poorly form the floor. Both combined to shoot 5-of-18 from the floor for 16 points.
Second-year wing Jayson Tatum led the Celtics bench in scoring with 19 points. Dejounte Murray of the Spurs was also effective on the offensive end, finishing with 12 points in 17 minutes.
The Celtics squandered a small halftime lead as they were outscored by the Spurs 63-42. This loss also brings their record against playoff teams post All-Star break to 1-5. While Boston is on track to make the playoffs, it looks like they may not make it past the first round. Rather than focus on how far the Celtics can get in the playoffs, the focus should be on how the Celtics close out the remainder of the regular season. The Celics will wrap up the month of March with home games against the
Atlanta Hawks and
Cleveland Cavaliers while also making a trip to Canada to face the
Toronto Raptors for the last time this season.
