Re: The Story of Ted Cox: College Bball Coach
Catching Up With McNeese Head Coach Ted Cox
USA Today
One year ago at this time, Ted Cox was playing point guard for the #1 Kansas Jayhawks and had a career that was fast-tracked towards playing meaningful minutes in the NBA.
But today, Cox sits in a darkened office, in a facility that doesn't have much natural light. Many would say it's nice much bigger than a closet, but to Cox, it signals his new home.
"When I injured my knee, life felt like it was over. The doctors said no more basketball, and that was it. But I talked to one of my former advisors in AAU, and he asked if I had considered coaching."
So Cox reached out to super agent Rich Paul, and asked for his advice.
"I wanted to know what was out there, and he told me he was sure he could find a market."
Paul put out his feelers to several universities and discovered that yes, there would be a market for the former All-American point guard.
Among those schools was McNeese St., where Cox is happy to kickstart his career.
"The community as McNeese St has been great to me. It was very humbling to go through everything that I did, but my goal is Championships. I want what I never got to play for."
In his first season as head coach, McNeese St has stumbled to a 4-6 early season record, but Cox is happy what he has seen.
"I'm a new coach and have been blessed by many veteran players. It's been challenging but it's nice to see the system starting to gel."
When asked about what's next, Cox replied "Just win."
