Re: The long journey of a Padawan: FLM Wizards

No surprise in Washington

With the playoff getting close to an end it is that time of the year when Free Agnency is coming and FLM teams start to plan. The Wizards are no exception and the team confirmed today they would not create any surprise by retaining all their promising players.

The following players options have been actiovated for 2021 season
  • Marvin bagley III, traded from Sacramento in 2020 will remain a Wizards for 2021. The former 2nd overall pick in 2018 will become a RFA at the end of the next season (projected to retain $11.31M on 2021 salary cap).
  • Troy Brown Jr, no surprise for the 21 years old selected 15th overall by Washington in 2018, he is seen as a growing talent in the organisation. Worst scenario he will be a valuable contributor out of the bench and may even push for a spot in the rotation either at shooting guard or small forward (projected to retain $5.17M on 2021 salary cap).
  • Moritz Wagner, 23 years old, extension has been as well confirmed, and the former Michigan Wolverines is a valuable bench player either as #4 or#5 (projected to retain $3.89M on 2021 salary cap).

Young to hit the open market, status unclear for Porter...

The Wizards as well confirmed that they would not retain Thaddeus Young $14.19M option for 2021 making him an unrestricted free agent. Young a 14 years veteran joined the Wizards during the 2019 free agency. He had only 8 starts in 2020 averaging 3.8 poinmts per game.

With a projected team salary total around $115M it remains unclear wheher Washington intend to resign Otto Porter. The 27 years old is an unrestricted free agent buis elivgible for a bird exception. Porter departure would create an obvious gap at Small Forward for the Wizards at the start of the off season.

Re: The long journey of a Padawan: FLM Wizards

The Magnificent Seven

Like any other FLM team the Wizards are looking to improve talent in their roster during the off season. In Washington though there is quite a constraint named salary cap. Of course it is NBA, not NHL or NFL so there are workarounds, but these are just workarounds...

The best chances to improve the talent, to get a potential game chamger in the roster for Washington is with the coming draft. Wizards may end up anywhere from top to 7th pick.

''We are not too concerned about it. It all comes down to seven guys. We have seven names in our draft board. We know who they are and we are very comfortable because wherever we land we will get an impact player'' commented Coach Mac.

The Wizards have a single pick this year since their 2nd round selection has been traded. Last year top overall selection James Wiseman had a 6.4M cap hit on Clippers, while 7th overall selection R.J.Hampton had a 3.48M cap hit for Knicks in 2020. Assistant GM Owens Master added ''When it comes to value for money nothing compare to 1st round draft picks''...

Re: The long journey of a Padawan: FLM Wizards

Breaking News: Coach Mac leaves FLM

Divorce in DC

Yes a couple of weeks without news and it seems like an old story.

Basically the FLM went through the draft and its off season,
I picked Cade Cunningham at 4th who was arguably the most talented player of the class. Now to make a long story short, the way the off season was organsied (or not organised) was a huge turn off.

This overall issues around injuries not being addressed, games not being streamed, and a few other things made me wonder, like my old boss Gerry was saying, "are we in the bed with the right person ?" . And often asking such a question is giving an answer...

Honeymoon in DC

At rhe same time, I got the incredible opportunity to join a league where a few of my good Madden mates are playing.

League is obviously very solid run by what you can quickly feel are good veterans folks. (efficient) Injury management, custom draft class, custom roster, (real) trade control, balanced sliders, active chat...

The cherry on the cake, they look for a Wizards user... No way after the tryout I decide to move and here I am in the 3ND 2K league as Wizards.

First thing which makes you feel like it is the right place is that they are in the second season (similar to when i joined FLM) but the the Wizards look like... Wizards. All draft picks and players are there except Bertrans.

So from now our Padawan jounrey continues and we love our Wizards.

2K20 3ND 2021 Season Wizards

First of all lets state the basics.
  • ND plays with 12 mn Quarter and 29 games season
  • We join the Wizards with a 1-2 record
  • Scott brooks is our coach

I cannot say how happy I am to have the chance to get that team pretty much intact in a solid league. I am still the noob it will be along journey this for sure. But it is really fun.

Re: The long journey of a Padawan: FLM Wizards

Questions in DC

The Wizards have, as expected struggled so far this season.

Games played so far
  • vs Pistons L 151-153 (previous GM)
  • vs Bucks W 148-143 (previous GM)
  • @Hawks L 140-165 (previous GM)
  • vs Nets L 101-119
  • vs Kings L 84-133
  • @Cavaliers L 88-100
  • vs Hornets L 91-120
  • vs Jazz L 88-100
  • vs Trail Blazers L 74-124
  • vs Lakers L 105-132

It is not very obvious in the results but we are slightly getting better at shooting. We still ahve phases and we lack a bit of consistency in the decision.

Our last game against Lakers is a good reflection on where we are. Up by 10 at the end of the 1st Quarter, unfortuntaley we still had 3 more quarters to play and ended loosing by 27...

"We have phases where we can play decent but we really need to get some consistency and capacity to play a complete game without looking lost on some phases. We need better composure with play selection" commented coach Brooks

So the main focus should be really on improving our playbook chemistry and defense. Defense, defense, defense....

A questionable rotation

With Brown suffering a torn right calf muscle, Wizards are forced toi make changes but it is mucg deeper than that..

Are we using the players at their best position ?

Both Guards position and Center slot are locked up at least for the starters. Wall, Beal and Bryant are all locked up starters.

But behind that it looks wide open:
  • Hachimura is very talented offensively but he is a bit of aliability on defense, should he play SF or PF ?
  • Brown Jr will end up with a minimum of 22-25mn in the rotation, but should he be a starter ?
  • Jordan McRae is a great shooter can we get him a role in this team ?
  • Wagner looks really good when he comes out of the bench, should he start at PF ?
  • Who should play at Center behind Bryant, Gasol with his great shooting or, Azubuike to develop a potential good rimprotector ?

So many questions but no answers as of yet.

Forwards focus

But another issue is in our stats analysis (and i am talking behind the scoreboard...). If we have a look at the below stat:
  • B.Beal - 29.5 MPG - 20.3 PPG - .522 TS%
  • C.Anthony - 20.4 MPG - 14.9 PPG - .549 TS%
  • J.Wall - 25 MPG - 13.5 PPG - .469 TS%
  • J.McRae - 15.9 MPG - 9.3 PPG - .569 TS%
  • Wagner - 20.9 MPG - 8.4 PPG - .579 TS%
  • Hachimura - 23.4 MPG - 7.9 PPG - .480 TS%
  • Bryant - 22.8 MPG - 6.6 PPG - .529 TS%
  • Brown Jr - 25.4 MPG - 6.4 PPG - .430 TS%

We oviously need more balance between guards and forwards. We may need as well to role better players like Brown, McRae and Wagner. By role I mean adjust our systems to make the best of what they do well and limit what they dont do well.

We need to balance better and the right rotation is likely the one which will achieve that and which will not expose us too much on defense.action and scoring.

Re: The long journey of a Padawan: FLM Wizards

The Show must go on

Standing 1-10. the Wizards are at the bottom of the Eastern confrerence. The most recent game against Golden States Warriors was a good illustration of this season journey.

The Wizs had what you could call an awful start. Turnovers, desynchronisation in play execution, individual mistake, no disciplin in defense... Washingthon offered a true disaster.

Down 19 ro 32 after the opening quarter, they rallied to eventually end up with dfown by 11 at the end of the game.

TEAM TOTALS36/806/157/1242301011385
Golden State Warriors
TEAM TOTALS39/749/209/134628911796

Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat

Brown Jr injury gave the opportunity to see Wagner longer while Hachimura played more at Small Forward. Should the Wizards continue as such and keep Brown in a 6th man role ?

Coach Scott Brooks seems, in apparence, still pretty calm on the topic. "The point for us is to start getting some consistency and it starts by stability. As far as rotation is concerned competition is good but players need as well to get some chemistry".

Key "bad" stats
  • Points allowed: 127.8 (30th)
  • Opponents FG efficiency: .552 (30th)
  • Opponents 3P efficiency: .411 (30th)
  • Free throw efficiency: .727 (30th)

Few "less terrible" stats
  • Bench Points: .462 (2nd)
  • Offensive rebounds: 15.1 (6th)
  • Steals: 8.5 (6th)

The blueprint for Washingthon imnoprovement is easily defined.

First getting better on ball defense and shoot contest is critical. "Often our players are in position to contest but end up passive, we need to train them to improve in that matter" commented assistant coach Chris Green.

Second, eliminate obvious individual mistake. First with pass, and, second, overall with play execution. The very first way to achieve that is to stick to the playbook, no more change for at least 10 games. "We probably have changed the book too much oin past copuple of weeks. It is now time to stick to what we have anmd make the best of it" commented coach Brooks.

Then if Real Deal Beal continues to play like he has been on past few games, the wizards may get closer to a 3nd league team.

Re: The long journey of a Padawan: FLM Wizards

Coach Mac Pre-Draft press conference:
No panic

With the worst record at the end of the 2021 season, the Wizard won the 5th pick in the 3ND lottery draft.
After a trade with Thunders the Wizards own as well two picks in the 2nd round. The (round 2) 6th selection from Thunder and 22nd from Warriors
Opportunity to seat with Coach Mac surprisingly still there after a quite humiliating winless campaign.

On the feeling at the end of a terrible season

A lot of frustration. However, sorry to say that, it has not been a painful journey. It is a good competitive league. We learned quite a lot on our roster, on our players.
In the end I think we had a gameplan and playbook which kind of made sense with our strengths and weaknesses.

We progressed in our vision of what is required to win. We started thinking we were missing a strong old school center. In reality we need better shooting because with Bryant and Wagner we have two players who can spread the defense. It is not visible in the standings but we are better than a couple of months ago.

On what needs to improve collectivelly

I think there are two things that winning teams do consistenly well and that loosing teams struggle with.
  • (winning teams) hit their 3 points close to 45% pof time.
  • andm they defend well against opposing shooters.

In fact they just play 3nD baby...
It is obvious when you watch a team like Sacramento, they green, green green green again and again. These shoots are from 3 not 2.
Then while they play on defense, they are so quick to close the gap and position their body to decrease the opposing shooter chances.
In these two technics you have all the difference to become a better team.

On how Wizards approach the offseason

First thing first, we do not panic. We know our cap situation and we embrace it.
Dont get confused by our record this season, we have enough talent to win and compete in this roster. So do not talk to me about reset and all that non sense.

We have a lot of good players returning.
Our main priority is to keep developing our core young talents: Cole Antony, Brown Jr, Bryant, Wagner, Hachimura.
And to help us, we really like our veterans. John Wall and Bradley Beal form a strong guard duo, MacRae and Gasol have precious experience to help develop our young core.

Second, as we said we embrace our situation, basiclaly FA does nto exists for us. So foor us, it all about draft. That is why we traded to get extra picks. because we felt that class was deep enough to give us a good prsopect in the 2nd round.
Let's see if we can find it in the limited time we have.

On mock draft sending Kuminga to DC

Mock draft are a fantasy. I think nobody has a clue of what happens between 2nd and 4th.

We do not control much. I got a few other GMs calling me asking ''Who do you pick ?" or "what position do you take ?''... but I have no clue. It all depends on what happens between 2nd and 4th.... ask them.

But one thing is sure. We will get a very talented guy at 5th.
So we did cut very early any trade down conversation. We do not need quantity or depth. This roster is good enough we just miss one or two more guys to give more headache to the defense and force them to abandon Beal for a bit.
