11/22 vs. UL-Lafayette
FIU defense forces 10 turnovers in ugly 27-11 win on Senior Day
FIU Football News I guess a win is a win. FIU pushed their current winning streak to 2 with an ugly 27-11 win over visiting UL-Lafayette on Senior Day, a game that featured 15 turnovers and some brutal offensive performances. The name of the game though was the swarming Panther defense, which put up their best game of the season. FIU held the Ragin' Cajuns to only 105 yards of total offense and 4 first downs, while forcing 10 turnovers. The defensive domination was led by the senior leaders, specifically SS Joel Razzano, defensive captain DT Dwayne Nicholson, CB Andre Paul and DE Adrian Mason. Razzano was a major ball hawk against the Cajuns, picking off 4 passes and returning one of them for a momentum-changing TD in the 2nd quarter. Razzano's TD broke open a stagnant 3-3 tie and sparked the Panthers to victory. Nicholson, Paul and Mason each played their own parts as the Panthers forced 6 fumbles, recovering 4 of them, and picking off demoralized Cajun QB Jeff Flowers 6 times. On the offensive side of the ball for FIU, it was an ugly performance until the 2nd half. FIU also gave up 5 turnovers, but senior RB Casey Simmons put the game away in the 3rd quarter with a huge 86-yard TD scamper. Simmons rolled up 175 yards on 31 carries in his final home game as FIU totaled 334 total yards of offense, including 160 on the ground. Senior TE Mike Hamilton also got into the action for FIU, catching a TD pass from junior QB Will Ferguson late in the 4th quarter to give the Panthers a 27-3 lead. Ferguson was shaky in the 1st half but had a solid 2nd half to end up with a very respectable stat line. Ferguson was 14-of-28 passing for 174 yards, the TD pass to Hamilton and was only picked off once. Top receiver WR Donald Anderson led FIU with 75 yards receiving on 5 catches, while slot WR Jason Morgan added 70 yards on 4 catches. Before the game, the FIU athletic department honored the 15 Panther seniors. RBs Casey Simmons and Justin Peterson, backup WR Marcus Graham, TE Mike Hamilton, offensive captain T Kellen Marcus, C Dan Massey, DEs Adrian Mason and Mark Hill, DTs Dwayne Nicholson and Kyle Sanders, MLB Lorenzo Townes, CBs Andre Paul and Julian Anderson and strong safeties Joel Razzano and Jeff Allen were honored by the university, the fans and the coaches. FIU now faces the biggest moment of the season next week, as they travel to face their rivals in Florida Atlantic for another matchup of the Shula Bowl. Last season, FAU outlasted the Panthers 39-36 in double overtime. This season, the game means a lot more than just the rivalry line. FIU sits atop the Sun Belt standings at 5-1, but the Owls are right behind at 4-2. The winner of this game will win the Sun Belt championship. 11/29 @ Florida Atlantic
FIU avoids scare from rival to win Sun Belt championship
FIU Football News A few weeks ago, FIU head coach Kyle Borland was talking about how he wanted to call his team a "winning program". Instead, he can now call his team "champions". The Golden Panthers survived a wild 2nd half after a defensive struggle in the 1st half of play to upend their rivals in Florida Atlantic and clinch the Sun Belt title outright with a 38-35 victory in the Shula Bowl. FIU took a 10-7 lead into the halftime break and was able to hold off an upset-minded FAU for the win. Senior RB Casey Simmons, playing in his final regular season game along with 14 other seniors, was the biggest player of the day for the winning Panthers, totaling 282 total yards from scrimmage, including 199 yards on the ground, and scoring 3 times in the 2nd half. Simmons carried the ball a season-high 42 times as FIU tried to work the clock and keep the quick-scoring Owl offense off the field. Simmons scored on a 76-yard screen pass in the 3rd quarter to break open a 17-17 tie, then scored twice on TD runs to help FIU keep the lead. Simmons' 1-yard plunge with under 2 minutes to play followed a great punt by junior Austin Carroll and an even better defensive stand by the FIU defense to give the Panthers a late two-possession lead at 38-29. Despite giving up 493 total yards, including 442 through the air, the FIU defense was just solid enough to help out in the victory. The Panthers' defense intercepted FAU QB Scott Edwards 3 times, including senior SS Joel Razzano's 63-yard TD return early in the 3rd quarter. Junior QB Will Ferguson was decent in the win, completing 10-of-20 passes for 199 yards, 2 TDs and an early interception. WR Donald Anderson led FIU with 82 yards receiving on 4 catches, while slot WR Jason Morgan caught his 7th TD pass of the season. FIU finishes the regular season at 9-3 overall and 6-1 in the Sun Belt, an amazing turnaround from last year's 3-9 campaign. The Golden Panthers earn their 1st Sun Belt title ever and are expected to earn a bid to play in the Motor City Bowl. Re: Building A Career: A NCAA Football Coaching Dynasty
Yeah with my defense so shaky sometimes I have to run the ball more and work the clock. Simmons is too good to not give the ball to, so I figure if it ain't broke don't fix it. I'd rather get a 2 or 3 yard carry out of Simmons and keep the clock going rather than risk a pass with Ferguson and possibly stop the clock.
Either way it worked out great. Thanks for following! |
