FIU busts out of offensive funk, drops 62 on USF
FIU Football News

It seems the early season funk seems to be over.

FIU broke out of their 2-game offensive struggles to light up the visiting South Florida Bulls for 535 total yards of offense in a 62-21 romp. Junior QB DeMarcus Jean threw for 5 TDs, senior RB Ray Brooks eclipsed the 200-yard mark on the ground and the FIU defense held the Bulls to only 161 total yards of offense and forced 6 turnovers.

"What an incredible turnaround," Coach Borland said after the game. "This week we preached every day in practice about staying focused, keeping the eye on the prize and staying sound in our assignments. Apparently the preaching worked, as they came out fired up and ready to play. I'm very happy with the performance from both sides of the ball."

Jean, who had thrown 9 interceptions in the past two losses compared to only 3 TDs, tossed five TDs to 4 different receivers and was not intercepted. Jean hit WR J.J. Smith, TE Chris Hendrix and WR Brandon Turner for a score each, while slot WR Jason Morgan nabbed 2 TD catches. Jean finished 17-of-35 for 281 yards on the day.

Jean got a lot of help from the running game and the defense though. Senior RB Ray Brooks, who has averaged only 39 yards in the past two games, broke out with 206 yards on 23 carries and scored on two very long TD runs to spark the Panthers to a 28-point 2nd quarter. Brooks scored on runs of 79 and 63 yards as FIU turned a 7-7 stalemate into a 35-7 halftime blowout.

As for the defense, which got pounded last week for 50 points, they stepped up in a big way in shutting down USF QB Matt Grothe and a usually proficient offense. The Panthers held the Bulls to only 161 total yards of offense and only 7 first downs. USF scored on their 1st possession but did not find the red zone until the 4th quarter. FIU also forced 6 turnovers, including freshman CB Chad Smith's 1st career interception return for TD in the 4th quarter. Smith picked off Grothe and took it 44 yards untouched to the end zone for FIU's final score. Leading the way for the defense was sophomore DE Harvey Diggs, who was in Grothe's face all game. Diggs finished with 8 tackles (5 for a loss) and recorded 2 sacks, forced 2 fumbles and recovered 2 fumbles.

FIU's offensive explosion happened without the help of senior offensive captain WR Donald Anderson. Anderson, FIU's top receiver, went down following a block in the 2nd quarter and did not return to the game. Anderson suffered a torn pectoral and will miss next week's conference opener.

The Golden Panthers will hit the road to open Sun Belt play next week, taking on 1-3 Arkansas State. FIU came back to beat the Indians in overtime last season.

Freshman gets suspended for violation of team rules
FIU Football News

Bad behavior seems to be a common theme among the FIU freshman safeties, as SS Matt White has just been suspended for 3 games due to violation of team rules.

It is unclear what the reasoning behind the suspension is and Coach Borland was unable to be reached for comment. This is the 2nd suspension for the Golden Panthers so far this season. Fellow freshman SS Tim Sykes just returned this past week after serving a 2-game suspension.

FIU prepares to open conference play against 1-3 Arkansas State. The Indians are coming off a loss last week and are on a 2-game losing streak.

Freshman QB Whitworth, defense lead FIU to conference win #1
FIU Football News

Redshirt freshman QB Lamont Whitworth ran for 188 yards and 2 TDs and the FIU defense answered the call for the 2nd straight win as the Golden Panthers went on the road and collected Sun Belt win #1 over Arkansas State 38-14.

Whitworth, who usually sees the field on running or option plays, slashed through the Indian defense for his huge rushing output. Whitworth scored on long TD runs of 63 and 74 yards as FIU overcame 5 turnovers to dominate. The Panthers totaled 229 yards on the ground.

Starting junior QB DeMarcus Jean threw 3 interceptions but led an offense that put up over 500 total yards for the 2nd straight week. Jean finished 17-of-29 for 274 yards and 2 TDs, but his 3 early interceptions cost the Panthers some points that could have made the blowout score worse for the Indians. Without injured WR Donald Anderson, Jean found a new target in senior WR J.J. Smith. Smith finished with 166 yards receiving on 10 catches and scored FIU's final TD. Sophomore TE Chris Hendrix added 56 yards receiving and a TD.

As for the FIU defense, they really stepped up to the plate. The Panthers held Arkansas State to only 186 total yards of offense and 5 first downs, including only 30 yards and no first downs for the entire 1st half.

Senior WR/KR Shannon Ernst got FIU started with an 81-yard punt return for a TD in the 1st quarter and finished with 150 punt return yards.

The Golden Panthers get a bye next week and then hit the road to take on the Troy Trojans. Last season, FIU used some tough defense to shut down Troy in their 21-10 victory.

FIU offense rolls up big yards, points in rout of Troy
FIU Football News

Wasn't the Golden Panther offense struggling a few weeks ago?

The problem has apparently been fixed in a big way, as FIU put up nearly 700 yards of total offense in a 59-28 Sun Belt romp over the host Troy. The Panthers ran for 288 yards and also put up over 400 yards through the air as they dominated the Trojans.

Several Panther players had big days for the offense that put up 695 total yards and earned 24 first downs. Senior WR Jason Morgan had arguably the best day, catching 7 passes for an amazing 203 yards and scoring 3 times to lead the FIU receivers. Fellow senior WR Donald Anderson added 138 yards receiving and scored twice.

The men throwing them the ball was a great combo of junior QB DeMarcus Jean and freshman QB Lamont Whitworth. Jean threw for 332 yards and 3 TDs, while Whitworth added 75 yards and two 4th-quarter TD passes to put the game out of reach. Whitworth also added 114 yards rushing and a 72-yard TD run.

As for the rest of the running game, senior RB Ray Brooks turned in another great performance, putting up 182 yards on the ground and 2 scores.

The FIU struggled against the pass but it didn't cost them the game. Troy put up 452 yards of offense themselves, including 349 through the air, but they turned the ball over 4 times and couldn't match FIU score-for-score.

The Panthers travel back home next week to welcome the North Texas Mean Green for a recruiting weekend. FIU has 3 recruits coming to Miami for the game. Last year, FIU held off North Texas for a 31-24 win.
