Backup corner suspended for 3 games
BYU Football News

The off-the-field issues have started already for BYU, as backup CB Kellen Polite will be suspended for the next 3 games due to acadmeic reasons.

Polite, who has yet to play a down this season, supposedly was caught with academic documents with forged signatures. Details on the matter could not be found.

BYU head coach Kyle Borland could not be reached for comment. The Cougars travel this weekend to take on Middle Tennessee State.

Mason scores 4 TDs to help BYU improve to 2-0
BYU Football News

Senior offensive captain WR Oliver Mason continued a hot start to the season by scoring 4 TDs to help the BYU Cougars defeat the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders 33-28. BYU built a 21-7 lead before MTSU threatened in the 3rd and 4th quarters, but the Cougars were able to hold on to improve to 2-0 to start the year.

"Man, it feels really good to get this win," BYU head coach Kyle Borland said. "I've always had trouble against MTSU so getting this win on a new team feels great. It's also awesome that we're 2-0 already. I'm feeling really good about this team."

Mason was unstoppable for the Cougars and scored all of their TDs on the day. The senior WR caught 10 passes for 200 yards and was on the receiving end of all 3 TD passes from senior QB Ed Pino, and also returned a 2nd-quarter punt 86 yards for a game-changing TD.

"I'm really glad to see Mason take over," Coach Borland said. "We hit a few rough spots during the game, and each time Mason was there to get us back on track. He's going to have a special year."

Mason's 3 TDs and a Billy Parker field goal gave BYU a 24-7 lead, but the Blue Raiders would not go away quietly. MLB Mark Burch intercepted a Pino pass and returned it 82 yards for a score, while RB Chaz Covington broke loose for a huge 92-yard TD run to cut BYU's lead to 24-21. Unfortunately, BYU was able to work the clock and get another field goal out of Parker and Mason's 4th TD to put the game out of reach. MTSU scored again with only 40 seconds to play to account for the final score.

As for BYU, Pino had a solid day throwing the ball, completing 27-of-40 passes for 418 yards. Pino of course hit Mason for 3 scores and was intercepted twice. Senior WR Sheldon Newman also went over the century mark receiving with 117 yards.

The BYU running game was solid but not spectacular against the Blue Raiders, and suffered a tough loss to injury. Junior RB Walter McGrew tallied 69 yards on 19 carries but left the game in the 4th quarter. McGrew suffered a bruised shoulder and will miss the next 3 games. Sophomore QB Will Dunn was great running some option, totaling 58 yards on 8 carries.

BYU stays on the road and travels to face a tough Nebraska team, who is also 2-0.

Off-the-field issues continue for BYU
BYU Football News

Another backup cornerback is going to miss the next few games due to suspension for BYU. Devon Huston will miss the next 3 games after violating a team rule.

Huston is the 2nd suspension for BYU in as many weeks, and the 2nd corner to cause a distraction for the team.

BYU head coach Kyle Borland could not be reached for comment. The Cougars travel this weekend to take on a tough Nebraska Cornhusker team.

Pino throws 5 TDs as BYU overcomes rough start to dominate Nebraska
BYU Football News

I believe that these BYU Cougars are for real.

Senior QB Ed Pino threw for 359 yards and 5 TDs as BYU overcame a rough start to shock Nebraska on the road, 52-21. BYU fumbled on their 1st drive and Pino got sacked for a safety two drives later, but a 92-yard interception return TD by senior CB John Walker sparked BYU. Pino threw 3 of his TDs in the 2nd quarter as the Cougars built a 38-8 halftime lead and never looked back.

"Outstanding performance out of Pino today," BYU head coach Kyle Borland said. "He was just awesome throwing the ball, accurate, with good power and was calm in the pocket. Our defense deserves a nod too, but Pino took advantage of all the opportunities. Great game all around."

Pino completed over 80% of his passes (22-of-27) and hit 4 different receivers for scores. His main target was senior offensive captain WR Oliver Mason, who continued his amazing year with 184 yards receiving and a TD. Slot WR Chris McCargo returned from injury and was a force for BYU, totaling 117 yards and 2 TDs. Seniors WR Sheldon Newman and TE Brian James also caught TD passes on the day.

As for the BYU defense, they were outstanding in the blowout of the Cornhuskers. The Cougars grabbed 5 interceptions, including 4 on Nebraska QB Brendan Thompson to knock him out of the game, and recorded 3 sacks. Walker's TD return was actually only the 1st of three interceptions he would have on the day. MLB Garrett Cooper was also a solid force for BYU, recording a sack, an interception and blocking 2 extra points.

Sophomore QB Will Dunn led a decent output from the BYU running game with 98 yards on only 7 carries and a huge 72-yard TD run. Sophomore RB Scott Taylor, starting in place of the injured Walter McGrew, ran for 52 yards on 17 carries.

BYU faces arguably their toughest test of the season next week as they open conference play. The Cougars return home but will welcome the Top 25-ranked Horned Frogs of TCU. TCU has had a monopoly over the Mountain West as of late, winning the last 3 conference titles. The 3-0 Cougars could make a huge statement by upsetting TCU.

Another suspension for the Cougars
BYU Football News

The backups for BYU just can't seem to stay out of trouble, as the Cougars announced their 3rd suspension in as many weeks. It was another backup player for BYU, which has been the same for each suspension so far.

Backup center Tim Rucker will miss the next 3 games due to a serious academic violation. Details on the matter were not released.

BYU returns home to welcome #14 TCU for a huge conference opener for both teams.

BYU overcomes 16-point deficit to upset #14-ranked TCU
BYU Football News

Arguably, this has to be one of Coach Borland's biggest wins.

Coach Borland and his BYU Cougars pulled off a stunner this weekend, coming back from a 16-point 2nd-quarter deficit to upset the 14th-ranked TCU Horned Frogs at home 36-28. TCU used 2 long TD passes to turn a 6-6 defensive deadlock into a 22-6 lead, but BYU got a score right before the half to swing momentum back in their direction. In the 2nd half, senior QB Ed Pino threw 3 of his 4 TDs as BYU tied and eventually took over the score and held on for the win.

"This is great!" Coach Borland exclaimed after the win, soaked in Gatorade. "We knew we had a shot to prove ourselves today and we did just that. TCU is an awesome team and they've been dominant over the Mountain West for the last few years, but we have a new sheriff in town, and that's the BYU Cougars!"

BYU's upset snapped TCU's long conference winning streak, in which TCU had won the last 3 MWC titles and didn't lose a conference game during that run. But now, it seems BYU has quickly taken control over the conference.

"Not only was this a big win to keep our unbeaten streak alive," Coach Borland said. "But it was huge for the conference standings. It's always great to win the conference opener, but to win over last year's champs? There's not much that can top that."

BYU took to the skies to upset the Horned Frogs, led by Pino and his group of solid receivers. Pino shredded the TCU secondary for 500 yards passing and 4 TDs on 32-of-50 passing. Pino did get off to a rough start by throwing 2 interceptions in the 1st half, and finished with 3 for the game, but he was very efficient in the 2nd half in leading the Cougars back.

"We knew coming in that we were going to test their secondary," Pino said. "Coach noted that they had the 5th-best run defense in the country but their defensive backs had yet to be tested by a good passing attack. Coach kept calling the pass plays and we didn't throw many deep balls but it worked."

Most of Pino's passes were short curls or middle crossing routes that cut up TCU's defense. His longest and biggest pass of the day was actually a short dump-off to sophomore RB Scott Taylor. With BYU up only 29-28 late in the 4th quarter Taylor, starting in place of the still-injured Walter McGrew, took a short pass from Pino on 3rd & 1 and turned it into a 51-yard game-clinching TD. The TD put BYU up 36-28 and put one of the final nails in the coffin for TCU. Taylor finished with 86 yards rushing as well.

Senior WR Oliver Mason continued his amazing Heisman campaign for BYU, catching 14 passes for 255 yards and a 3rd-quarter TD catch. When BYU got into trouble, Pino was able to find Mason for several key 3rd-down conversions. Fellow senior WR Sheldon Newman also went over the century mark receiving with 101 yards and a 2nd-quarter TD catch. Freshman TE Richard Meyer scored his 1st career TD when he caught Pino's 3rd TD pass of the day to put BYU up 29-28 in the 3rd quarter.

As for the disappointed Horned Frogs, QB Marlin Thomas had a great day despite the loss. Thomas threw for 402 yards and 3 TDs to keep TCU in the game. WR Sean Bryant was his main target with 191 yards receiving and 2 TDs. WR Jovon Marshall added 136 yards receiving and a TD, while RB Jordan Mixon had 65 yards rushing and scored the 1st TD of the game.

BYU now sits atop the MWC standings at 4-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Cougars continue MWC play next week as they take on the San Diego State Aztecs.
