More commitments for BYU
BYU Football News

BYU received two more signed letters of intent this week, bringing their in-season total to 5. Coach Borland and the Cougar coaching staff went to offense for this week's recruits, including his 1st true dual threat QB.

QB Clint Rodgers, a 3-star scrambler out of Franklin, Tennessee, shunned the home-state Volunteers in favor of Coach Borland's Cougars. It was a hard-fought battle between BYU and Tennessee for Rodgers services, and it is clear now that the Cougars peaked his interest.

Joining Rodgers is offensive tackle Jordan Gates, a 3-star lineman out of Parkway, California. Gates is a huge prospect that should help solidify BYU's offensive line.

Rodgers and Gates join RB Tim Brewer and DEs Leigh Wilson and Terrell Porter on BYU's in-season commit list.

BYU hits the road in search of win #10 next week at rival Wyoming.

BYU overcomes rough start to beat rival Wyoming
BYU Football News

The 24th-ranked BYU Cougars fell behind 14-0 to rival Wyoming, but rode the strength of their passing game and defense to defeat the Cowboys 28-14. Wyoming led 14-0 thanks to two TD passes, but BYU got 3 TD passes from senior QB Ed Pino and held the Cowboys scoreless for the final 3 frames to complete the victory and improve to 10-0.

Pino threw an interception on BYU's 2nd drive but recovered to throw 2 TD passes in the 2nd quarter to send the game into halftime tied at 14. In the 2nd half, the Cougars got 2 field goals out of freshman kicker Billy Parker and put the game away when Pino found Heisman front-runner senior WR Oliver Mason for an 8-yard score.

Pino threw for 324 yards, 3 TDs and that early interception on 24-of-41 passing. Mason was his main target, totaling 103 yards and his late TD catch. Senior slot WR Chris McCargo had 80 yards receiving and TD, while senior WR Sheldon Newman caught a TD pass himself.

The BYU offensive line got shredded by Wyoming, allowing 10 sacks. The Cougars only totaled 29 yards rushing, due mostly to Pino's -66 yard output. Sophomore RB Scott Taylor led BYU with 56 yards on 23 carries.

The BYU defense was sound after struggling in the 1st quarter. The Cougars held Wyoming to only 223 total yards and 12 first downs. They recorded 7 sacks and forced 3 turnovers, and held the Cowboys to only 4 yards rushing.

BYU will face one of their biggest tests next week in their quest for an undefeated season when they return home to welcome rival Utah for the annual Holy War. The two teams will play for the Beehive Boot.

BYU pulls in WR to complete in-season list as they prepare for rivalry game
BYU Football News

Big news all over for the #23-ranked BYU Cougars as they prepare for arguably their biggest test of their incredible season.

The Cougars completed the in-season recruiting period this week by pulling in their 6th recruit. WR Obadiah Williams, a 3-star receiver out of San Antonio, Texas, submitted his letter of intent to play for BYU next fall. Williams joins five other commits, inlcluding 4 on offense total, for BYU so far.

Back at the home base, BYU and head coach Kyle Borland get ready to take on their hated rivals in the Utah Utes this weekend. The two teams will be playing for the Beehive Boot, but this game means more than that. A win for either team clinches at least a share of the conference title. A win for BYU clinches the title outright.

"This is a big game," Coach Borland said. "I coached some big rivalry games with title implications at FIU, but this game just seems to be bigger. Bigger crowd, bigger stakes, better talent on the field. This is going to be a true test for not only the players, but myself as well."

One of the goals the BYU athletic director placed on Coach Borland before the season began was to beat Utah. Beating Utah is one thing, but winning their 1st Mountain West title in years by defeating their hated rivals is another.

"We really did not expect to have this much success this season," Coach Borland remarked. "I mean, being 10-0? I never saw that. I always believed in my team and thought we had exceptional talent, but the ball just seems to be bouncing our way. Now if only the nation's voters would take notice, everything would be perfect."

BYU finally inched into the Top 25 a few weeks ago, but has only climbed 2 spots despite their unbeaten mark staying intact. BYU is one of only 5 teams in the nation that have not lost yet, but still remain ranked low at #23. Maybe beating Utah will provide a boost in the rankings.

"It seems a lot of experts and voters weren't expecting much out of us and it's showing in the polls," Coach Borland said. "The media poll has us a little higher and at least ranked above TCU, but we can't seem to make any movement in the coaches' poll. I guess we just have to keep winning to prove them wrong."

BYU upset then-#14 TCU back in Week 4 by a score of 36-28, but barely got any recognition for it. TCU lost a non-conference game to another ranked team a few weeks later, and somehow finds themselves ranked higher than BYU in the coaches' poll.

Winning a conference title may just be the boost BYU needs.

Re: Building A Career: A NCAA Football Coaching Dynasty

for those who follow, I'm guessing you've noticed that I've changed by box score layout a bit. I think it's a bit more readable, but I'm looking for a little feedback on that area.

If there are certain aspects you like or want to keep, let me know.

If you like an older way or don't like a new way, let me know.

If you have a suggestion (HTML especially), let me know as well.

I want to make mine as readable and eye-catching as possible.

Thanks to all that follow!

11/19 vs. Utah

BYU rolls over rival Utah to win MWC title outright
BYU Football News

It's officially true: Coach Borland just knows how to build champions.

The #23-ranked BYU Cougars clinched their 1st Mountain West championship in several years and improved to an impressive 11-0 mark by defeating their rival Utah in the annual Holy War, 48-24. BYU built up a 35-24 lead and held the Utes scoreless in the 2nd half to complete an undefeated conference mark (8-0) and move one step closer to their 1st undefeated regular season in over 20 years.

"What an incredible ride it's been," Coach Borland said after the title-clinching win. "And the great part about it is, it's not even close to being over yet! We already clinched the title outright and we still have another game to play to help put us at 12-0. The voters can't ignore us now!"

BYU has gotten the short end of the stick in the polls despite their unblemished record, but after this win it seems BYU is ready to make a statement to the world of college football.

"There's no reason we shouldn't get a shot at a BCS bowl," Coach Borland said. "We are one of only a few teams that are still undefeated. Hopefully, the cards will fall into place for us."

Senior QB Ed Pino had a great day throwing the ball for the Cougars in the win, throwing for 538 yards and 4 TDs on 36-of-55 passing and only 2 interceptions. Pino hit four different receivers for scores, and surprisingly none of them was Heisman leader senior WR Oliver Mason. Despite not finding the end zone, Mason still led BYU with 200 yards receiving on 11 catches. Senior slot WR Chris McCargo crossed the 1000-yard mark for the season during the game, and finished with 121 yards and a TD. Senior WRs Eric Jackson and Sheldon Newman each caught a TD pass as well.

Freshman FB Jermaine Hunter had a nose for the end zone though, scoring 2 TDs on the day. Hunter scored on a 1-yard plunge and a 2-yard reception in the 1st quarter as BYU built a 21-7 early lead.

The Cougars got a solid effort from sophomore RB Scott Taylor, who totaled 101 yards on 22 carries and kick-started the game with a 34-yard TD run. The offensive line had trouble protecting Pino though, allowing 11 sacks. Despite Taylor's high total, the Cougars totaled only 37 yards rushing due to Pino's -78 yard output.

The BYU defense struggled against the pass in the 1st half, but shut down the Utes after the halftime break. The Cougars recorded 8 sacks, which led to Utah totaling -41 yards on the ground. BYU also intercepted 3 passes and forced 4 turnovers total.

The #23-ranked Cougars have a bye next week and will finish up their incredible regular season at home for Senior Day. BYU will welcome a familiar foe to Coach Borland, as they take on UL-Lafayette. Coach Borland is 4-0 lifetime against the Ragin' Cajuns.
