Jean named Heisman candidate as FIU predicted to win Sun Belt again
FIU Football News

Senior QB DeMarcus Jean, coming off an impressive year in leading FIU to an 11-2 overall record and their 2nd straight Sun Belt championship, was named a Preseason Heisman candidate as the new season looms closer. Jean, who threw for 3483 yards and 33 TDs while also rushing for 4 TDs, is expected to be more efficient and smart with the ball than he's been the past 3 years (57 interceptions total, 24 last season) in guiding the Golden Panthers to possibly a third straight title.

Jean finds himself in a flock of quarterbacks on the Heisman list, which is topped by junior QB Corey Foster out of LSU. Foster was a mainstay on the Heisman Watch for the majority of the year last season, but dropped out down the stretch.

Preseason Heisman Watch

1) Corey Foster, QB, LSU
2) Casey Hawkins, QB, Arizona
3) Michael Robertson, QB, Auburn
4) DeMarcus Jean, QB, FIU
5) Darrell Fritz, QB, Texas Tech

As for the rest of the Panthers earning Preseason honors, there were several players picked to play well this year, highlighted by 4 Preseason All-Americans.

Junior TE Chris Hendrix, DEs Mike Goins and Harvey Diggs and CB Chad Smith earned Preseason All-American nods by several magazines and experts. Hendrix emerged as a go-to guy for Jean last year, catching 40 passes for 532 yards and a nation-high 10 TDs among tight ends. Goins led the nation in sacks last year with 20, while Diggs chipped in 11. Smith was named a Freshman All-American last year after recording 3 interceptions, 3 forced fumbles and a defensive TD.

All four men are expected to help lead FIU back to the top of the Sun Belt standings. Besides being named Preseason All-Americans, each of the four men and several other FIU players were named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt squads.

Hendrix, Goins, Diggs and Smith are joined by Jean, senior DT Derek Valentine (10 sacks last year), sophomore MLB Nathan Jenkins (12 sacks) and sophomore CB Melvin Johnson (6 interceptions) on the Preseason All-Sun Belt 1st Team. Senior CB Corey Sutton (3 interceptions, 13 passes defensed) was named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt 2nd Team.

As for the entire team, FIU is picked to win the Sun Belt again, followed closely by Middle Tennessee State. The Golden Panthers are looking to run the table again and keep their current 10-game conference winning streak alive.

Sun Belt Outlook

1) FIU
2) Middle Tennessee State
3) North Texas
4) Troy
5) Florida Atlantic
6) UL-Lafayette
7) UL-Monroe
8) Arkansas State

As for FIU's opponents this upcoming season, the Panthers will face a good group of tough opponents for their 4th year under head coach Kyle Borland. The nation's #1 offense last season will face tough non-conference opponents like Alabama, #6 Texas and a road rematch with USF. FIU will have a bye in Week 1 but will not get another until the final week of the regular season.

Year 4 Schedule

Despite finishing in the Top 25 last season, FIU finds themselves unranked to begin the year but still up near the top of the nation. Tennessee begins the year as the Preseason #1 team despite losing the BCS National Championship last year. Fellow SEC foe LSU and Heisman candidate QB Corey Foster appears at #2, while the defending national champs in Florida State pop in at #5.

Hot start, tough defense leads FIU to season-opening win over Alabama
FIU Football News

FIU jumped out to a 21-0 first-quarter lead and used some surprisingly tough defense to hold off the visiting Alabama Crimson Tide to secure a 27-15 season-opening win.

The FIU offense, which ranked #1 in the nation last season, moved the ball at will in the 1st quarter in building their early insurmountable lead. Senior QB DeMarcus Jean hooked up with All-American junior TE Chris Hendrix for two scores and new starting RB senior Josh Chance scored on the ground as FIU led 21-0 at the end of the 1st quarter.

"We got off to such a great start," FIU head coach Kyle Borland said. "It was really impressive to see these boys come out firing right out of the gates. We struggled a little bit on offense the rest of the way, but our defense stepped up to help put the game away. Overall, I was very satisfied with the win."

Jean was the biggest name in FIU's big early lead, but he struggled in the 2nd quarter and eventually got knocked out of the game. Jean turned the ball over three times in the 2nd frame, including 2 interceptions, and then left the game due to a shoulder injury. The senior Heisman candidate finished only 7-of-16 passing for 109 yards and added 10 yards rushing.

Sophomore QB Lamont Whitworth entered as the full-time QB after Jean's injury but was not as explosive as he usually is. Whitworth ran for 60 yards on 13 attempts and completed 3-of-6 passes for 49 yards in Jean's absence. FIU managed only 6 points on two Dwight Heinz field goals for the final 3 quarters.

Chance, who is set to replace the graduated Ray Brooks, had a solid showing in his 1st career start. Chance totaled 118 yards on the ground on 28 carries and his 1st-quarter score for a good day. Fellow senior RB Alonzo Fisher added 13 yards rushing as FIU totaled 201 yards on the ground as a team.

The FIU defense was very impressive against the Alabama offense, holding them to only 204 yards of total offense and recording 7 sacks and 2 interceptions. Junior DE Harvey Diggs picked up 2 of those sacks, while sophomore MLB Nathan Jenkins nabbed 3 of his own and sophomore SS Tim Sykes recorded both interceptions.

FIU starts out 1-0 for the 3rd straight year and will look to push thier record to 2-0 for the 2nd time in the past 3 years as well. The Golden Panthers travel to face South Florida next week. FIU crushed USF 62-21 last year to start their current 11-game winning streak.

Jean-to-Arnold in final minutes complete comeback win
FIU Football News

I guess the motto to FIU's season will be "never say die".

Senior QB DeMarcus Jean threw his 4th TD pass of the day to sophomore WR Nick Arnold with only 1:18 to play to erase USF's 17-point halftime lead and complete FIU's incredible comeback in a 34-33 road victory. The Bulls led 23-6 at the half, but Jean & company rallied back on the strength of their passing game to erase the deficit and improve to 2-0 to start the season.

USF came out of the gates fired up, looking to get revenge for last year's 62-21 embarrassment they suffered at the hands of FIU. South Florida scored on their opening possession on a Jake Bennett TD run, but pressure from the FIU block team forced USF to try for a desperate two-point conversion that failed. The failed conversion turned out to be the 1-point difference in the final score.

Following a Dwight Heinz field goal, USF put another score on the board when FS Tim Watts recovered a Josh Chance fumble and fell into the end zone to give the Bulls a 13-3 lead. FIU's usually potent offense struggled in the first half and only managed another Heinz field goal to cut USF's lead to 16-6 with under a minute to play. The Bulls decided that a 10-point lead wasn't enough, as QB Dan Salyer found WR Greg Heath up the sideline for a huge 68-yard TD catch to boost USF to a 23-6 lead right before the half.

"We made a lot of adjustments at the half, mainly on offense," FIU head coach Kyle Borland said. "They were shutting down our running game so we decided to open up the passing game. It ended up working out."

Jean and his crew of receivers began to slowly cut into USF's lead. All-American TE junior Chris Hendrix and the aforementioned WR Arnold were Jean's biggest targets as FIU began to mount the comeback. Jean found each for a score in the 3rd quarter, but another long TD pass from Salyer-to-Heath and a field goal allowed USF to go into the 4th quarter still up 33-20.

In the 4th quarter, it was a back-and-forth turnover battle that eventually led to FIU's incredible win. FIU cut the lead to 6 when Jean found Hendrix for his 3rd TD pass of the day, but following another Josh Chance fumble, it appeared FIU's shot at completing the comeback was out of the question. That's when the FIU defense stepped up, particularly sophomore SS Tim Sykes. On USF's first play following the turnover, Sykes stepped in front of Salyer's pass and nabbed it to give the ball right back with just over 2 minutes to play. The Panthers drove the ball the rest of the way, and Jean found Arnold for TD pass #4 to give FIU their 1st lead of the day.

The FIU defense allowed two first downs on the ensuing USF drive, but two sacks put the Bulls in a 3rd & long and a 4th & long situation that they couldn't convert.

Jean threw for 450 yards on 25-of-39 passing in the victory. His biggest target was Arnold, who is beginning to emerge as a serious go-to threat. Arnold caught 13 passes for 273 yards and 2 TDs, including the game-winner. Hendrix, who led all tight ends last season in TD catches, had 75 yards receiving and 2 TDs on the day, pushing his current season total for TD catches to 4. Last season he had 10 TD receptions.

The FIU running game was ineffective, gaining only 1 yard on 39 carries total. Chance finished with only 8 yards on 20 carries, while sophomore QB Lamont Whitworth led the team with 13 yards on 3 carries. Whitworth got injured in the 2nd quarter and did not return.

The Golden Panthers face a big and challenging task next week, as they travel to take on the #5-ranked Texas Longhorns.
