1st-place FIU easily disposes of winless UL-Monroe
FIU Football News

FIU wasted no time in rolling over the winless Warhawks of UL-Monroe on the road, building up a 35-0 halftime lead en route to a 56-14 shellacking of their Sun Belt foes. Junior QB DeMarcus Jean threw for 4 TDs, freshman QB Lamont Whitworth and senior RB Ray Brooks added 2 TD runs each and the Panther defense held the Warhawks to only 156 total yards of offense.

Jean got off to rough start, throwing an interception on only his 2nd pass of the day, but he quickly recovered in leading the FIU offense which produced 606 total yards. Jean threw for 333 yards on 18-of-34 passing, hitting 3 different receivers for scores. Senior slot WR Jason Morgan caught 2 of Jean's TD passes and finished with 138 yards receiving, while top target senior WR Donald Anderson finished with 166 yards receiving and a 2nd-quarter TD catch.

Brooks, who also caught a TD pass, finished with 112 yards rushing and two 1st-quarter TD runs to spark the FIU running attack. The freshman sensation in Whitworth actually led the Panthers in rushing with 150 yards on only 14 carries and 2 long TD runs of 73 and 56 yards. As a team, the Panthers put up 257 yards on the ground.

As for the FIU defense, they didn't allow the struggling Warhawks to even sniff success. UL-Monroe only compiled 156 total yards, including -4 on the ground, and got two cheap TDs to complete the final score. Freshman CB Melvin Johnson picked off two passes and junior DE Mike Goins recorded 5 sacks for the 2nd straight game. As a team, the Panthers recorded 10 sacks total and held UL-Monroe to only 6 first downs and didn't allow them to convert a third down (0-for-10).

FIU will stay in the state of Louisiana for their next game, taking on the Ragin' Cajuns of UL-Lafayette. Last year, the Golden Panthers beat UL-Lafayette 27-11 on Senior Day.

FIU pulls in another defensive recruit to complete in-season period
FIU Football News

The recruiting trail for FIU continues to heat up, as the Golden Panthers pulled in their 6th in-season recruit of the year following their blowout win over last-place UL-Monroe.

FIU reached out of Florida and into the heart of Texas for their final recruit, pulling in another much-needed linebacker. OLB Mark Abrams, a 3-star backer out of Richardson, Texas, submitted his signed letter of intent to play for the Panthers next year. Abrams joins fellow linebacker commits in Brent Hunter and Mike Anderson to bring in a solid crew for FIU.

The Panthers hit the road to take on UL-Lafayette next week.

FIU uses passing game to win 8th straight
FIU Football News

I thought the spread option offense was supposed to contain... more option?

Junior QB DeMarcus Jean threw for 435 yards and 4 TDs on 26-of-45 passing as the Golden Panthers won their 8th straight game to tie the school record for wins in a season they set last season. FIU built an early 17-0, held off a ferocious comeback by the Ragin' Cajuns and outscored them 14-0 in the 2nd half to win 38-21.

Jean and his awesome crew of receivers shredded the Cajun defense and accounted for 435 yards through the air of their 572 total. Jean crossed the 3000-yard mark for passing yards in the 3rd quarter as the Panthers avoided a 2nd-quarter scare.

"Our running game was struggling to make big plays so we had to turn to the passing game," Jean said after the win. "Coach put the ball in my hands and kept asking me to find open receivers. We had a few mistakes but overall we did well."

Jean despite the great day did throw 3 interceptions, but a strong effort from the FIU defense kept the turnovers from being anything more than a breather for the offense. Slot WR Jason Morgan led the Panthers with 132 yards on 8 catches, while sophomore TE Chris Hendrix (84 yards) and senior WRs Donald Anderson (72 yards) and J.J. Smith (81 yards) each caught at least one TD pass. Anderson snagged two TD receptions on the day.

Jean showed off some impressive footwork as well despite a pedestrian day from the running game, totaling 45 yards on the ground. Senior RB Ray Brooks led the Panthers with 57 yards on 21 carries and a 2nd-quarter TD run, while freshman QB Lamont Whitworth added 33 yards.

As for the FIU defense, their performance wasn't as dominating as the past few weeks, but their 2nd-half shutout proved to be the difference.

For the Ragin' Cajuns, RB Marcus Davis totaled 180 yards from scrimmage (83 rushing) and scored 2 TDs.

The win over UL-Lafayette gives FIU 9 wins this year, tying the school record for wins they set last year during their 9-4 Sun Belt championship year. The Panthers still have one huge test to close out the year, which takes place following their bye next week. FIU returns home to welcome their rivals in 2nd-place Florida Atlantic for the annual Shula Bowl. Not only will it be Senior Day for the Panthers, but the Sun Belt title will be on the line.

Seniors leading charge as #23 FIU prepares for huge rivalry game
FIU Football News

"If you haven't heard about FIU yet, you will after next week," senior OLB Roderick Anderson said.

That's been the mentality across the board as the newly-ranked #23 FIU Golden Panthers prepare for arguably the biggest and most important game of the year --- their Shula Bowl rivalry game with Florida Atlantic with the Sun Belt championship on the line.

"They got us two years ago, but we got them last year," senior slot WR Jason Morgan said. "This is the rubber match coming up, but it means a lot more than that. Senior Day, at home, Sun Belt title on the line. You can't have it any better than that."

Morgan and FIU's top-ranked offense will be looking to dominate the Owls and send a message to the nation. FIU leapt into the Top 25 this week for the 1st time ever in program history and is looking to stay there.

"We finally cracked into the rankings and we're definately focused on not leaving," senior RB Ray Brooks said. "Our goals this year were to win the Sun Belt title and make it into the Top 25. With the win this week, we can accomplish both."

It's going to be an emotionally-charged game despite the championship implications, as FIU will honor 23 soon-to-be graduating seniors before the game. These seniors have spent all three season under head coach Kyle Borland and are looking to make a lasting impression for years to come.

"We want to be the first class to say we won back-to-back championships," senior CB Tyree Alexander said. "We know with Coach Borland at the helm the team is going to be fine for years after we leave, but we want to be the 1st squad to claim back-to-back. It's all we're focusing on this week, winning that 2nd title."

Last year, FIU held off the Owls in a tight battle, winning 38-35 on the road to clinch their 1st Sun Belt title ever. This year, at home, the Panthers are looking for bigger and better things.

"We don't want to go back and forth with them," senior FS Mark Owens said. "We want to score early and often and I know our defense will be sharp. We want to show the world what we're made of."

With so much at stake, how can anyone not take notice of the #23-ranked Golden Panthers and their quest at Sun Belt title #2?

"We're here to stay," Coach Borland said. "We are now a force to be reckoned with. The nation has already rewarded our hard play with a Top 25 ranking, and I know after this weekend we will be set for years to come. You can't ignore the success we're having. It's been unbelievable, and I couldn't ask for anything more."

FIU blows out FAU on Senior Day to win Sun Belt championship
FIU Football News

Too bad all that pregame drama went to waste.

FIU left no doubt in their quest for thier 2nd straight Sun Belt title, destroying their rivals in Florida Atlantic at home on Senior Day 63-7. It was an awesome effort from both sides of the ball for the Golden Panthers, as they built a 28-7 halftime lead and never looked back.

Offensively, the nation's top-ranked offense had no trouble tearing apart a beleagured FAU defense for 587 total yards and a large amount of points. Junior QB DeMarcus Jean accounted for 5 TDs and senior RB Ray Brooks nearly hit the 250-yard mark on the ground to lead a near-perfect FIU attack.

Jean wasn't spectacular but was very efficient, throwing for 296 yards on 17-of-28 passing for 4 TDs and only one interception. Jean also showed off some running skills, totaling 27 yards rushing and a 3rd-quarter TD run. As for Brooks, the senior totaled 249 yards on 28 carries and scored 3 times, including 2 huge 1st-quarter TD jolts to spark the Panther offense. Brooks, who wasn't supposed to match the production made by the graduated Casey Simmons, crossed the 1500-yard mark during the game for rushing and his 3 TD runs gave him over 20 for the year.

Senior WR Donald Anderson led FIU with 116 yards receiving and a TD, while fellow senior WR Jason Morgan added 71 yards and a TD himself. Sophomore TE Chris Hendrix was also a big target for Jean, totaling 89 yards receiving and 2 TD catches.

As for the Panther defense, they played very well in holding Florida Atlantic to barely any offense. FIU held the Owls to only 255 yards of offense, including only 17 yards rushing, recorded 7 sacks and forced 6 turnovers.

As we look ahead, #23 FIU claims the Sun Belt championship with a 7-0 record, meaning they are most likely headed back to the Motor City Bowl to face a MAC opponent. Last season, the Golden Panthers lost 47-34 to a tough Toledo team in the Motor City Bowl.
