Coaching Career of Bud Foster

Shanahan retires from coaching

DENVER, CO -- He was known as a genius, a mastermind and, yes, a Super Bowl champion. Shockingly, though, Mike Shanahan has a new title: retired coach.
Shanahan became the latest and most stunning victim of the NFL coaching purge, retiring Tuesday by the Denver Broncos after a late-season collapse knocked the team out of the playoffs for the scond straight year.
Shanahan became the fourth coach to be lost to the NFL this season, joining Brian Billick (fired), Bobby Petrino (Resigned) and Cam Cameron (fired), after going 16-16 over the past two seasons.
"After giving this careful consideration, I have concluded that retiring from coaching is in the best interests of myself and the Denver Broncos organiztion," said Shanahan today.
Owner Pat Bowlen had been steadfastly loyal to Shanahan, rewarding the coach who brought the long-awaited Super Bowl title to Denver with what seemed like carte blanche for life, but rumors of his firing were heard as the Broncos missed the playoffs thisyear.
But Denver remained stuck on only one postseason victory since John Elway retired in 1999 following back-to-back championships. Shanahan finishes at 138-83 over 13 seasons in Denver, including playoffs.
"I was talking to Mike yesterday about personnel moves," QB Jay Cutler said in an interview on KCNC-TV in Denver. "I'm as shocked as anybody else. I think it's the wrong move."
For any other coach, on any other team, this kind of thing wouldn't have come as such a surprise, considering the season that just ended.
Who might be able to turn it around?
Because Shanahan's job had seemed so secure, there hasn't been much speculation. Now, all the usual suspects will surely surface, both on the coaching and personnel sides: Brian Billick, Scott Pioli, Jim Fassel. Shanahan's best assistant over the years, Gary Kubiak, is under contract with the Texans. There has also been rumors of a lesser-known coach taking the job, and the Broncos have promised to look all over for a guy who can help this team win.

Broncos hire Foster

Denver, CO-- The Broncos today announced the signing of their new Head Coach, 8 days after the sudden retirement of former coach Mike Shanahan. The man they chose to do the job is Virginia Tech Defensive Coordinator Bud Foster. Here is Foster's Bio from hokiesports.com:

Regarded as one of the top defensive minds in the game, Bud Foster enters his 21st season at Virginia Tech. The 2006 Broyles Award winner has helped mold nationally ranked defenses on a yearly basis during his 12 years as a coordinator.
Foster, who was a finalist three previous times (1999, 2001, 2005) for the award given to the nation's top assistant football coach, has gained a well-deserved reputation as one of the nation's most respected defensive coaches while serving on Frank Beamer's football staff at Tech.
The 2007 defensive group was also among the nation's elite, featuring a pair of first-team All-Americans in Brandon Flowers and Xavier Adibi, along with six all-conference selections.
The 2006 unit led the nation in total defense for the second straight year. The unit also led the nation in passing and scoring defense. The 2005 squad led the nation in total defense and ranked among the top three teams in three other categories. It produced two first-team All-Americans along with four all-conference players.
Tech's 2004 defense ranked in the top five nationally in total defense, pass defense, scoring defense, interceptions and turnovers gained.
Under Foster's guidance, the Hokies' 2001 defense proved to be one of the nation's best, ranking among the top eight teams in Division I-A in six different categories and leading the way in shutouts with four.
After helping Tech to the national championship game in 1999, Foster was recognized as the 2000 Division I-A Defensive Coordinator of the Year by American Football Coach magazine. Tech's 1999 defensive unit led Division I-A in scoring defense and ranked third in two other categories.
Following the 1998 season, Foster was pursued by the University of Florida for its defensive coordinator position, but he opted to continue his long-standing football association with Beamer. That association dates back to 1979 when Foster was a strong safety and defensive end at Murray State and Beamer was the defensive coordinator. Foster began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at MSU in 1981, Beamer's first season as the head coach.
Since coming to Tech in 1987, Foster has worn several coaching hats. He coached the inside linebackers for one year in 1987, then tutored the outside linebackers for the next five seasons. Foster assumed responsibility for both sets of linebackers prior to the 1993 season and also took over special-teams coaching that year. The following year, he coached the inside linebackers and special teams. Foster assumed the position of co-defensive coordinator in 1995 and took over as the sole defensive coordinator in '96. The inside linebackers continue to be his primary responsibility.
A 1981 graduate of Murray State, Foster was an outstanding strong safety and outside linebacker from 1977 to 1980. After two years as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Foster was elevated to a full-time staff position. The Nokomis, Ill., native coached outside linebackers for three seasons before taking over the inside and outside linebackers in 1986. He also served as the Racers' recruiting coordinator and worked with special teams.
Foster and his wife Jacqueline have three children: Amy Porter, 28; Grant, 21; and Hillary, 19.

Broncos trade Dumervil

Phoenix, AZ-- The Cardinals today announced a trade finalized late last evening. They have traded 2nd and 6th round picks in this upcoming draft for Broncos DE Elvis Dumervil. Dumervil, who despite having tons of talent, was struggling in the new system installed by Coach Bud Foster, and after sitting down with his coach to discuss it, asked to be traded. Foster agreed to this and Dumervil tells us he's happy to be a Cardinal and thankful to coach Foster for letting him leave. Dumervil has 56 tackles, 5 Defl, 21 sacks, 5 FFum, and 1 INT in 2 years as a pro.

Broncos trade Thomas

Denver, CO-- In another defensive trade today, the Broncos traded away DT Marcus Thomas to the 49ers for an 09 6th and 2010 7th round draft picks. Thomas was a projected starter this year but was in a fierce 3-way battle for that spot. This trade should not be a bad deal for the Broncos.
