Re: Athletes Skipping College For Minors/NFL

I don't see many NFL teams drafting kids right out of high school anyways and putting them on the team. There would have to just be another NFL minor league system. NFL is a whole different ball game then the MLB or NBA. An 18-19 year old who isn't fully developed won't get destroyed physically in those two leagues. Quarterbacks are probably the only ones who would have a shot, and no NFL team is going to take a shot on a HS kid over a proven college player. NFL draft picks are 10000 times more valuable than a MLB or NBA draft pick.

Minor leagues in football make sense to me. Have the kids that don't want to be in school go focus full time on reaching their potential. If you want an education, go play for an NCAA school.

Then college football can turn into the watered down mess that college basketball has been for the last 15 years.

That would require the NFL to take some responsibility for the current state of the NCAA, and that's not going to happen. The wallets in the NFL are too tight to ever allow anything like that. To them, they already have their minor leagues in Division I and the CFL. If they were serious, they would have floated a lifesaver to the UFL or bought it out and cleaned the league out.

So many of the NCAA's problems could be solved by strengthening the NBDL and coming up with an NFDL or something along those lines, and allowing players to join these leagues after high school. I agree that taking a page from hockey, where the NCAA is viewed as an option, would be a wise move as well. It's time to put college athletics back in the hands of students instead of career athletes.

One thing I will say add about hockey's system is that they need to do a better job of committing to markets than hockey does. Playing musical chairs with minor league teams once every 3-5 years is a very poor way to keep fans interested, and therefore make a profit.

honestly i thought it was self serving bs on his part. he knows the brand has already been built. he thinks even if there was a legit minor league basketball/football that the colleges would still make the same amount of money, hes right. in a business sense and that the pro leagues hold blame, but that doesnt absolve them of their own blame and exploitation.
