My first PS3 stopped reading discs. I believe it was because of the 2.76 update, which others had the same problem occur. I bought a new one, but can't go online without being prompted for 2.80. Can I DL this version safely without any worries?

You should be in the clear, especially with a new system. I'm running 2.80 with no problems.
