Question Reading, Reading...Open Tray

Sounds familiar? Well, my Xbox 360, part deux, is having a heck
of a time reading games. It started with FIFA 10 to which I had to
load and re-load to successfully boot the game disk. Now FIFA 10
no longer boots up. Other titles have struggled to boot up. I fear
my 360, now officially out-of-warranty, is off to console pastures.

Xbox supports offers repairs for $120 if ordered over the phone
or $100 if the call is placed over xbox.com. Neither option is
attractive. What has me curious is that the system has no
problems reading .avi files off a cd, no hiccups what-so-ever.

How can the 360 struggle to read game disks while reading cd's?

Sounds like the pre-cursor of a E-74 error. That should be covered if the console isn't 3 years old yet. Keep loading games and hope it dies. Worst case, it's not covered. If not, I'd try E-Bay. I got my Jasper just working the bids in the middle of the night. Got it for $58.00. Man, I feel your pain!

Re: Reading, Reading...Open Tray

Yeah the original console RROD December 08, replaced January 09.
Today my 360 is indeed out-of-warranty. I wish I had the time to
scour Ebay. Working on a tender, of course letting OS distract me.

At this stage I am staring at a 3rd 360, rather exhaustive for a gamer
with little time on my hands. Maybe I should look at the PS3 platform?

Re: Reading, Reading...Open Tray

My console started doing this around christmas. I'd simply keep opening and closing the drive till it read the game.

Haven't had an issue in over a month now, but when I get some money it'll be time for an elite since I'd have this 360 since June 1st or 2nd, 2006.

Part of me thinks that to re-up on 360 gear is a waste of money. Any
info to suggest that later builds last longer? I would have preferred to
even pay more for Xbox Live with part of the fee designated for
insurance purposes, if the unit breaks, just replace at no charge.
Like the cables companies do when you rent an HD-PVR.

Exclamation Re: Reading, Reading...Open Tray

Update.

My 360 has no trouble at all loading up DVD's. Did MS release firmware
to kill off some consoles or what? lol Should it not be a matter of the
DVD tray and laser not working at all? How can the same unit load
DVD's without skipping a beat and choke loading game discs?

Question Re: Reading, Reading...Open Tray

Another update.

The 360 loads original 'Xbox' games successfully. How can the 360
read DVD's and Xbox 1 games but not current 360 titles?

Is there a more comprehensive way to format the HD? I suspect
a buggy firmware issue as opposed to a faulty laser.

Re: Reading, Reading...Open Tray

I had this happen to me earlier today. Every game I tried didn't work, DVD's didn't work, cleared the cache like they said on xbox.com, still no luck. I go to class thinking my xbox is done, right before my bday/Christmas too.

Then I come back, work on it some more, still no luck until I flip it on it's side (vertical to horizontal) and it works. I had tried it once before and it didn't work, but this time it did. I'm just wondering how long will I have before the "reading" problem becomes permanent and I get a RROD?
