I have don't have the audio converter either and I am able to have my tv on zero and still hear through my headset

Does your tv not have a headphones jack?

Either way you should be able to mute your tv and get sound to the headphones.

Yeah he must have something plug into the wrong hole or something. I have the same gaming headset, 360 hooked up via HDMI, Gaming headset red and white plugged into the external speakers jack on the back of my tv.

Got my tv on zero, sound still blasting through my Turtle Beaches.
