Re: United States National Team (PES 2007)

Surprise Roster for Australian Exhibition

Can Eddie Johnson Finally get out of his Slump?

After the match during Sunday Afternoon, you would have expected the United States players to have had their bags packed and fly over to Australia Late Sunday Night/Early Monday Morning. That was not the case! Only 7 players from Sunday's game in Foxboro traveled with the coaches to Australia last night. The others traveled home to enjoy their next 2 weeks off before they begin their training for Gold Cup 2009. "We didn't release the team for the Australian match because we didn't want it to become a distraction or cause confusion with the guys that played Colombia." said Bob Bradley, who looked like he had some jet lag in a quick interview when the plane arrived. "We are going to prepare in these next three days and then go and take on Australia. We want a win no matter who is here and who isn't." Well lets hope this 23 man roster filled with mostly "B" team players can get the job done.

Goalkeepers (3) - Joe Cannon, Kasey Keller, Chris Seitz

Defenders (7) - Chris Albright, Jimmy Conrad, Jay DeMerit, Corey Gibbs, Michael Parkhurst, Jonathan Spector, Marvel Wynne

Midfielders (8) - Freddy Adu, Kyle Beckerman, Eddie Gaven, Justin Mapp, Lee Nguyen, Ben Olsen, Steve Ralston, Danny Szetela

Forwards (5) - Brian Ching, Eddie Johnson, Steve Quaranta, Taylor Twellman, Sal Zizzo

Re: United States National Team (PES 2007)

Few Impress in scoreless U.S. Draw

Justin Mapp was one of few players who stood out tonight

"It has been a busy few days for us and even with a tie, I feel we have some positives to take away from this game" said Goalkeeper Kasey Keller after the game. Maybe Keller was being the veteran leader he is by saying the right things or maybe it was him being optimistic. After all, this "B" team only leaves us with that option after tonight's game.

The States had another unimpressive performance tonight against an Australian team that also fielded a "B" team. Australian, and "A" team player Harry Kewell was the best player on the pitch tonight. He nit picketed the defense with his fine passing and his beautiful touch on the ball left the defense bamboozled at times.

"He torched us all night. We held them from scoring, but they came close on numerous occasions thanks to his play." said defender Chris Albright about Kewell's play. Australia had more opportunities, with 4 shots on goal but all were saved. The most impressive save of the night being a Kasey Keller one handed diving save.

Chris Seitz who entered in the second half for Keller for no other reason other than to give him experience also had a shot fired his way. Seitz made an impressive dive and pushed the ball away but it kept rolling and luckily hit the post and went out of bounds. "It was definately a close one" said a laughing Seitz after the game.

The States only had two opportunities, one by Eddie Johnson who once again had a dismal performance. Johnson took a shot in the 4th minute, and almost surprised the Australian squad as the ball hit the crossbar and flicked over for a Goal Kick. "I thought I had it." said Johnson after the game.

The other clear opportunity came off a header by a Steve Quaranta who was all by his lonesome 12 meters away from goal. Quaranta could've trapped the ball and shot it, but he decided to header it, and he pushed it just wide of goal.

In the 90th minute however, Australia attacked and a pass to Harry Kewell who was in the middle of the area unmarked struck the ball as it roared by the defense and Chris Seitz into the back of the net. The Australian captain went wild only to be told a few second later that he was offside. The fans who had erupted in cheers, burst into boos as they had thought their team had scored. The replay shows that the call is going to be a controversial one as Kewell looked to be onside when the pass came out.

"I must say tonight was not a good game. We allowed Kewell to pick us apart and we ourselves didn't make enough chances" said Bob Bradley. "We must improve, especially in 3 weeks when Gold Cup begins." Some players that may have impressed the coach and may make a push for that Gold Cup Roster are defenders Chris Albright and Michael Parkhurst and midfielder Justin Mapp. The three played exceptionally well tonight. Albright showed signs of his younger self, pushing forward and trying to help create an attack. Mapp, although off target with some of his passes and shots showed lots of speed and technical ability, leaving Australian defenders in his rearview mirror, and Michael Parkhurst continously killed attacking threats with his great positioning. The relatively shorty center back even dominated through the air tonight although his opponents weren't much taller then him.

The U.S. begins the defense of their Gold Cup in 3 weeks. Expect the roster to be named in a week and a half or so. And lets hope that team plays much better soccer than what we witnessed tonight in Australia.

Landon Donovan was vital in 2007, can he do it again in 2009?

The United States has announced its 23 man squad that will head to Miami, Florida for its Group play in Group B of the Gold Cup. "It seems as if it was only yesterday that we held up the trophy" said midfielder Benny Feilhaber who practically won the U.S. the Gold Cup in 07 with a dream volley. "We have tough opponents and we will have to train hard for the next few weeks and days to prepare well and to reach our ultimate goal of defending our Gold Cup." said head coach Bob Bradley in the press conference earlier today. The States were drawn into Group B against Trinidad and Tobago, El Salvador and Jamaica.

United States Gearing up For Kickoff

Bob Bradley explains a drill as his son, Michael Bradley listens on

They are all but ready. It is time for the United States to begin their defense of their Gold Cup title. "We know it is going to be difficult, but we think we have the pieces in place where we can make a serious run at it." said Heath Pearce who is expected to start at Left Back against Jamaica. The States will take on the Jamaican team on Day 2 of the Gold Cup, by then the U.S. should know what Mexico has done against Guetemala. "We are not comparing ourselves to Mexico, but we will keep an eye on them to see how they are performing" said head coach Bob Bradley. We'll the Gold Cup is only hours away from kicking off, so I guess the players are going to be ready to keep an eye on the television.

Some news and notes from practice
-Justin Mapp is looking to seriously push Bobby Convey for the starting Left Attacking Midfield spot. Don't be surprised if you see Mapp inserted in the starting 11.
-Oguchi Onyewu and Carlos Bocanegra have been playing lights out at practice. The duo is on top of their game right now.
-Clint Dempsey continues to struggle and is having a hard time to find the back of the net. Will Gold Cup 2009 help him get out of his slump?
-Kasey Keller is playing lights out and will probably get a start in one of the three Group matches.
-John O'Brien continues to impress coaches and could be a key piece of the bench.

1-Mexico v Guatemala-2
1-Grenada v Canada-1

-Shocking upset by Guatemala over Mexico. Hugo Sanchez could be in some real trouble.
-Grenada and Canada tie in a game full of action. Two golazos to top it off. A perfectly timed left footed volley into the upper 90 by Grenada and a Canadian Free Kick that hit the cross bar and bounced in.

Re: United States National Team (PES 2007)

Dempsey lifts U.S.

Clint Dempsey was the man of the hour tonight

Clint Dempsey. Clint Dempsey. Clint Dempsey. Clint Dempsey. Why write his name four times? Because that is the amount of times the Jamaican fans heard the PA Announcer at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida announce his name. Dempsey was responsible for all four goals tonight, and although he did receive some passes, all of his goals were unassisted.

"What can we say? We have had faith in Clint to score goals. He has been playing well lately and tonight is just another great night to add to his name. This one will surely be unforgettable." said Head Coach Bob Bradley after the game.

"I hadn't scored for the (National) team in some time. Not even one during qualifying!" said an all smiles Dempsey. "Maybe this makes up for it." Dempsey even got praise from former USA Captain, Claudio Reyna who attended the game. "I played with Dempsey during his first few games for the National team. He has always had the skill and size to be special, and he continues to prove that." said the former Captain America.

The first goal came in the 28th minute. Clint Dempsey received the ball in the center of the field, just above the 18. Clint started running to his left and quickly cut back to the opposite direction when the defender shifted to him. He burst past him and had a 1 on 1 chance with the Goalkeeper. Dempsey just nipped it past him below and the States were on the board.

The second goal came only 5 minutes later. Dempsey was loosely marked and received a pass inside the 18. Dempsey quickly had two defenders rolling over to him. Clint pushed the ball ahead and that move gave him enough space to kick the ball into the back of the net.

The States took the 2-0 lead into the second half but when they came out they continued with more of the same. In the 52nd minute, Clint Dempsey received a pass and juked by a defender which allowed him plenty of room to run. Dempsey looked up and decided to take a shot from outside the area. A much better shot could've been mustered, but it didn't matter. The shot went right down the middle, and what was rather painful for Jamaica, the ball went through the hands of their keeper. Dempsey had scored a Hat-Trick.

Four minutes later, Landon Donovan made a run of his own. As he sprung loose, he was diagonal to the goal and ripped a shot that was pushed away by the keeper. Unfortunately, the ball bounced into the space of Clint Dempsey. Dempsey wisely dove with his head and hit the rebound in. Dempsey had scored his fourth goal of the night and the Orange Bowl erupted into chants of "Dempsey! Dempsey! Dempsey"

Other notes from tonight's game. Heath Pearce surprisingly didn't get the nod at Left Back tonight. Jonathan Spector was given the start instead and played exceptionally well. Brian Ching failed to impress tonight and couldn't get it going tonight. Also, Josmer Altidore was held to just watch this game from the bench so his first Gold Cup game will have to wait.

Even Jamaican fans were in awe of Dempsey's four goal performance, applauding his performance after the game as he walked off into the locker. But with Landon Donovan being held in check with multiple guys covering him, this allowed Dempsey more room. Maybe we'll see more of this against Trinidad and Tobago in a few days.
