I like to control the LB and hope that my DE contains, then if the QB cuts up field Im there waiting, if he pitches out get on my horse and get over there. Strafe is important keeps you from running yourself out of the play, especially against the option.

you would be in trouble if they run the option up the middle, instead of the outside.

Re: Stoping the option

Regardless of the defensive formation I'm in, I think one of the most effective ways to bust up the option is to take control of your corner or safety and destroy the pitch man. This leaves the QB alone and usually my outside linebacker or defensive end is there to make the stop.

Dorescore

Bingo. I play as Texas online and use the option a respectable amount(something like 20-25% of my plays) and whenever I see the De's out out wide, right after I hike the ball you move forward do a cut inside and you'r good for a 5-10 yard gain depending on the LB, and a very long gain if you can juke correctly.

Re: Stoping the option

I call the play out of the 4-4 where it's man with an OLB spy and the free safety is in deep zone. Then audible the DEs to QB spy. Now you should have containment on both sides.

Re: Stoping the option

i just got hurt pretty bad with Brad Smith running the option online. Would you guys say that running 4-3 against the option is a general bad idea? I was running 4-3 almost the whole game and had a lot of trouble. Both my MLBs are impact players cause i play with Iowa but i couldnt seem to do anything consistently to defend it. I tried some plays out of the 4-2-5 and that seemed to work better, should i stick with that?
