Eastern Michigan Enters 2011 Campaign With High Hopes

Last year Eastern Michigan was coming off a 2009 season in which they went 0-12 and were the brunt of many jokes across the college football landscape. Ron English's Eagles righted many wrongs, though, in 2010 going 8-4 and winning the MAC. The 2010 season included one of the biggest upsets in college football history as Eastern Michigan went into the Horseshoe and beat the 2nd ranked Ohio State Buckeyes 41-38 in thrilling fashion.

It is safe to say that hopes and expectations are high coming into the 2011 season. Eastern Michigan football fans haven't had much to get excited about over the years but they will have a talented team to root for in 2011.

It was hard to define a "starter" in 2010 since many Eagle players missed big chunks of the 2010 season due to injury. Eastern Michigan is the 2011 preseason favorite to win the MAC, but head coach Ron English knows his team has a very tough task at hand this season to repeat as conference champions. Last year's starting quarterback, Alex Gillett, transferred after a season in which he was knocked out in game two of the season, and never regained his starting job back after the brilliant play of freshman Devontae Payne in his absence. The 6'6" 235 pound Payne comes into the season as a preseason 1st team MAC selection after season in which he passed for 3,251 yards and 27 touchdowns.

"Devontae gives us an added dimension at the position due to his ability to tuck the ball and run, and use his size and athleticism to pick up yards on the ground as well as through the air." Said EMU head coach Ron English.

While Payne had a brilliant 2010 campaign, there is one player on the roster coming into the season with bigger expectations. Senior tight end Ben Thayer is coming off a junior campaign in which he caught 79 balls for 1,295 yards, and 8 touchdowns. Thayer is not only a preseason 1s team all-conference selection, but is also a 1st team preseason All-American.

"It is a great honor to be selected as a preseason All-American, but I do not plan on letting that go to my head, will continue to work hard in the weight room and on the field, and want to go out and prove to everyone that last year was not a fluke. Last year I benefited from teams keying so much on Trey [Hunter] but feel like my numbers will be there in the end if I continue to run my routes. Devontae and I developed a connection early and often last season and I'm excited about the possibilities of the upcoming season." Commented Thayer.

Senior wideout Trey Hunter is coming off a junior campaign in which he caught 56 passes for 822 yards and 6 touchdowns. Hunter joins Payne and Thayer on the preseason 1st team all-conference team. Hunter has one memorable catch last year that still has fans in Ypsilanti buzzing. In the Eagle's monumental upset of Ohio State, Hunter was able to spring free and make a 59 yard catch and run for a touchdown to give Eastern Michigan a 21-9 lead in the third quarter.

Other Eastern Michigan players to receive preseason honors include senior defensive end Javon Reese, senior defensive tackle Jabar Westerman, and senior kicker Sean Graham on the 1st team. No Eastern Michigan players were selected to the preseason all-conference second team.

Eastern Michigan is going to be more than challenged in their non-conference schedule. In week one the Eagles will once again travel to the Big House to play Michigan, a place they lost 41-24 a year ago. In week two EMU will travel to East Lansing to play the 22nd ranked Michigan State Spartans and will travel to Penn State the following week. Michigan State will wrap up their non-conference schedule with a game at 11th ranked Pittsburgh.

"We know that in our situation getting teams to come to our place and play us is very difficult. Our non-conference schedule does look brutal on paper, but we wouldn't schedule the games if we didn't feel like we had a chance to compete and win." Said English.

Eastern Michigan only had five home games a year ago and will only play four games in Ypsilanti in 2011.

Hell of a game, came down to nail biting final Fielg Goal. N.C had the ball on our 30 yard line with 4 seconds. There kicker shanked the ball off the upright and we won.

We now sit 2-2 with VMI (FCS) up next.

73 games is unreal, but I've had like 4 dynasty's and in all they seem to lose by the end if year 2, ah well, doesn't really matter in the end

I am in year 4 just gave them their 1st loss at home in week 1. They were only C+ overall playing against my A+ Florida State team. They managed to put up 30 points and over 500 yards of offense. Luckily I managed to get a kick return, and a punt return TD and won 44-30. They were definitely a pain to play in their place though.

No. 4 Penn State 34, Rutgers 31.

Yeah, it was a lot closer than I wanted it to be. It's quite hard to run with a running back who has less than 92 speed, but I'm working with what I have. You just have to be a bit more patient than usual.
