Manager Thoughts:
We took our first hit of the season before we even kicked the ball when our captain, Miles Jedinak, decided that he had gotten too big for the club and requested a transfer. He played a key role in our promotion and had been a good servant to the club, so we followed his wishes. His departure cleared the way for us to bring through one of the more talented players from our youth academy, 17-year old Oliver Gardner (CAM, 72 overall).
We didn't get a chance to get acclimated to life in the top flight, with three of our first five fixtures against some of the heavy hitters in the league (Tottenham, Chelsea, and Arsenal). We went 3-0-2 in that stretch, with us getting a shocking result at the Emirates.
We found ourselves spending most of the season in the top half of the table. I think that was largely due to the fact our star players were young enough in my first season to make large steps from a progression standpoint, which allowed us to be competitive right from the start.
We got mixed up in some tabloid drama midseason, with Zaha asking for a new contract. In order for us to accomplish that, we decided to sell two players that were no longer getting games for us. After signing Zaha to an extension and giving him a wage increase, Yannick Bolasie requested a new contract. unfortunately, we could not afford it. I got an angry email from the board, notifying me that Bolasie was unhappy and would be sold if we could not agree to a new contract. After requesting funds from the board and promising European qualification and a quarterfinal appearance in one of the domestic cups was enough to give Bolasie his extension.
With the quality of play much higher, we weren't able to overpower our opponents like we had in the Championship. We took a more realistic approach and chose to grind out results instead. Our goal production took a substantial hit, but we were getting the three points and that was all that mattered. With a month left in the season, we were in 3rd place with a chance to overtake Tottenham for 2nd. We lost and found ourselves in a race with Liverpool and Chelsea for the last two Champions League spots. A late draw with Liverpool and two losses to close out the season, all Chelsea needed to do was win on the last day and they would beat me out for the last CL spot on goal differential. Thankfully, Everton got a late equalizer and secured Champions League football for Crystal Palace.
