Transfers In
RW - Federico Palacios (Spain) (66 OVR 21yrs) (+1)
Activated $400k option to buy from RB Leipzig
Palacios spent a season and a half on loan at Osasuna but he is set for a permanent transfer now to the club that gave him his breakthrough. Palacios signed as a squad rotation player, but we all know he'll be a lot more than that judging by the way last season ended.
LM - Isma Lopez (Spain) (73 OVR 26yrs) (+1)
Pre-Contract Arrival from Sporting Gijon
Osasuna need a natural winger and Chavez hopes Lopez will be the one. The winger was born in Pamplona and was a part of the Osasuna youth academy for a very short time before going over to the Athletic Bilbao academy. He spent three years with Bilbao's reserve side before being sent out on multiple loan spells and eventually staying at Sporting Gijon permanently. He now returns to Basque Country and his hometown with Osasuna.
[b]CB - Pedro Bigas (Spain) (71 OVR
Purchased from RCD Mallorca for $3.8m plus Jon Echaide
Bigas was initially signed by Mallorca's youth academy before going out to play for different clubs at the lower levels. He began his career as a midfielder, but upon his return to Mallorca in 2012 he was given a new challenge as a centre back, where he excelled and has maintained himself since. Osasuna have plenty of midfielders, which leads us to believe that Bigas will play primarily as a center back. Especially since the B-Team's captain Echaide was included in the deal.
Transfers Out
CAM - Miguel De Las Cuevas (Spain) (72 OVR 30yrs)
Sold to Getafe CF for $2.7m
De Las Cuevas had been a crucial player in Chavez's lineup, but with Isma Lopez's arrival somebody had to be removed from the starting lineup and Cuevas was not open to spending some time on the bench this season. De Las Cuevas was Osasuna's highest paid player with a $60,000 weekly wage, a number Getafe were not able to match and offered him $35,000 instead. Negotiations took little more than a week between the player and club, but as no further offers came in and his time at Osasuna seemingly over, Cuevas had to accept.
RB - Javi Flaño (Spain) (67 OVR 32yrs)
Sold to Aston Villa for $550k
Javi Flaño was an important first team player during Chavez's first season, but last season Flaño was taken down to the B Team. Even though he did well with the alternate lineup, the arrival of Romeu from the youth academy increased competition on the wings, and Flaño was not able to compete against the youngster's speed and attacking mindset. Flaño finished last season as a defensive substitute, but even that role is taken now by Vinuesa Ramos, another youth graduate, so Flaño had to look for playtime elsewhere. The Spaniard will be joining England's Aston Villa, where he will most likely end his career.
GK - Jokin Ezkieta (Spain) (58 OVR 20yrs)
Sold to Crewe Alexandria for $100k
CB - Iñigo De Frutos (Spain) (65 OVR 21yrs)
Loaned to FC Barcelona B
CM - Mikel Merino (Spain) (64 OVR 20yrs)
Loaned to Sporting Gijon
Merino was a revelation for Chavez in his first season, as the young midfielder played brilliantly and rumor has it that his performances halted Osasuna's negotiations with another midfielder during that season. Last season Chavez kept his confidence with Merino, but the midfielder hasn't been developing his game in the past two years so the coaching staff have decided to loan him out before he gets too comfortable.
LB - Xavier Quinti (Spain) (64 OVR 20yrs)
Loaned to Leicester City
We are all still waiting for the young left back that was sold to Osasuna as a "future star" and with a $1m price tag. This will be Quinti's second full season loan, and Osasuna's staff have already set their requirements for his return.
CB - David Garcia (Spain) (63 OVR 22yrs)
Loaned to AD Alcorcon
CB - Unai Garcia (Spain) (63 OVR 23yrs)
Loaned to Leeds United
CAM - Jose Garcia (Spain) (61 OVR 19yrs)
Loaned to Millwall
Similar to Merino's situation, Chavez had great trust in this young attacking midfielder but as he has had minimal development in the past two years the staff have decided to send him out on loan.

Preseason Matches
CA Osasuna 2 - 2 Palermo
PAL: Makienok 18' Vazquez 87'
OSA: Torres 78' Guillermo 89'
Palermo went ahead with a header in the 18th minute following a terrible defensive mistake by Albentosa and Flaño who had no clue where they were at. Even though they tried to get back into the match, Osasuna found it almost impossible to create chances against Palermo's 3-5-2, a formation that Chavez frequented during his time at AFC Wimbledon. Chavez put all the meat on the grill with his substitutions, particularly Miguel De Las Cuevas in at RCM, and it worked fantastically as it was De Las Cuevas who put a through ball into the box for the LCM Roberto Torres to shoot first time and score!
Osasuna were finally on the scoreboard, but Palermo took the lead again nine minutes later as Vazquez made Flaño look nonexistent and slid the ball past the goalkeeper Rodriguez.
After that goal Osasuna went all out attack in search for the equalizer, and Guillermo delivered right before the 90th minute as he shielded the ball and went around his marker before powering the ball past the goalkeeper. The match ended soon after that and even though Palermo were the better side on the field they couldn't take the victory at El Sadar. Isma Lopez was given his debut but the winger gave a rather poor performance and was taken off in the second half. Palacios also gave a poor match from the right wing, making fans pray that he doesn't end up like Julian Luque did after his option to buy was activated last season.
Werder Bremen 0 - 0 CA Osasuna
Osasuna couldn't get a goal in Germany, but the fans didn't look too concerned seeing as in this match Chavez seemed to have focus on experimenting rather than the result. Osasuna started the match with the usual 4-3-3 Holding before switching to a 4-2-2 Holding with Guillermo and Palacios playing as strikers. In the second half Chavez switched to a 3-5-2, keeping Palacios and Guillermo as strikers. Even with all the changes Osasuna was making, the German side were never confused and held their clean sheet well.
CA Osasuna (B-Team) 4 - 1 AS Monaco
OSA: Luque 5' 13' Onwu 34' Kodro 76'
ASM: Falcao PEN 80'
ASM: Echiejile RED CARD 65'
It seemed like Osasuna would finish their preseason with many doubts but the B Team came in and saved the day with a dominant win against the French side. The revelation of this match was Chavez starting Julian Luque at CAM in place of Jose Garcia, and Luque responded to his manager's trust straightaway by dribbling past his marker, getting inside the box, cutting left, and then curving a shot past the keeper with three Monaco defenders surrounding him!
This was already a surprise early goal, but just eight minutes later Luque struck again, this time with a shot that deflected off a defender and went into the net. In the 34th minute Manuel Onwu scored a header from Ramirez's cross and made it 3-0. Osasuna were having the time of their lives on the pitch and were even comfortable to show off with some flare, as seen on the photo at the top of the article with the youth graduate Romeu showing some fancy passing. In the 76th minute Kenan Kodro made it 4-0 with a powerful shot, but four minutes later a penalty was called in favor of Monaco after Romeu, who had been having an outstanding match at LB, slid to try to prevent a cross but instead took the crosser down after the ball had already been sent into the box. Radamel Falcao sent the penalty right down the middle and scored while Rodriguez dove left. The goal did little for Monaco though as Osasuna calmly held the lead and finished the preseason off with a comfortable win.
CA Osasuna Player of the Preseason
LM - Julian Luque (Spain) (68 OVR 23yrs)
Luque finished last season with heavy critics and was widely considered as one of Osasuna's worst players of the season. Despite the negativity surrounding him Chavez still gave him another chance to show the talent he displayed in Liga Adelante and responded magnificently with two great goals against Monaco. It may have only been one match, but we're hoping this is Luque's turn around and he takes advantage of the opportunity of starting with the B Team seeing as Jose Garcia has been loaned out and the CAM spot is up for the taking.
What's Coming Up For Osasuna
With the preseason finally over the fans are anxious to see their home team every two weeks again. Osasuna are expected to have a difficult start to the season, as they will be hosting none other than the defending league title holders
FC Barcelona. After that, they will visit
RCD Espanyol who finished 3rd last season, and then host the recently - and controversially - promoted
Cordoba. We have been told that all three matches will be played by the first team, as the B Team does not have any scheduled matches until September.

Conclusion
I know I said I would be replacing Miguel Flaño with a top centre back this window, but I couldn't do it! The captain has been with the club since 2004. 2004!!! I couldn't bring myself to dropping him and even less selling him. Instead I chose Bigas who brings pace to the defense, something none of my centre backs have, and if he plays well he should be able to grow past Flaño who has been decreasing in stats. I will let Flaño play until he either retires or his form drops. Once that happens I will bring in a top centre back if Bigas isn't able to fill in Flaño's shoes.
So far from what I've seen in the preseason, Lopez hasn't convinced me. Looking at his stats he's the player I'm looking for, but on the field not so much. It's still too early to make a fair judgement so we'll see how he does as the season goes on. If he does not impress, I will look to bring in another winger.
Formation Talk
So, the first team didn't look too great during the preseason particularly my wingers. Roberto Torres had been playing really well at LW, but with Lopez's arrival and Cuevas' departure he's had to play at LCM, the position he held in my first season. Lopez has been playing LW and has been quite poor. On the other side, Palacios has been playing RW and also hasn't been producing much of anything. For these reasons, I will be starting this season with a
4-4-2 Holding instead of the 4-3-3 Holding I've been using for the past two seasons. I prefer not to play with two strikers up front, but I have to remember that Palacios had his goal scoring break through playing as a striker in the 4-3-3. I also have to remember that Guillermo has scored 45 goals with us also as the striker in the 4-3-3. I want to get the most I can out of this pair, so I will be playing them up front together. Isma Lopez will play LM, while Torres will go to RM as I know he can play well down the wing. Camarasa and Darder will be my holding midfielders, while the back line will remain the same.
That's it for the preseason. Let me know if you have any tips/suggestions for the formation change, and
Thanks For Reading!
