Re: How's Your FIFA Career Mode Going?

Long weekend here in the States, and international break, so I should be getting lots of FIFA time.

Clermont update and a Russian career.

Chairman's office, AmEx Community Stadium, Brighton

I've tried everything there is, Indi. Famous names. Champions League winners. Promotion specialists. Former legends. Mavericks. Would-be tactical revolutionaries. It doesn't seem to make any bit of difference. We still get ever so close to promotion and then fizzle out. That's why I need a man who knows what this club is about. I need you.

Tony, you know I've been waiting for this offer for ages.

I know. And I think you're ready. The board does. We believe you're the only one who can take us up.

I hope so. But if we're going to do this, we need to do it my way.

What's that?

Deconstruct the whole squad. Change the way we approach the game. Give a real chance to the boys who know what it means to play for this club. And bring in players who combine talent with heart and experience. I need total control over transfers. No committee. No parlay. No debates. Just my word based on the analysis and scouting reports that come in.

You're asking a great deal.

I'm ready to give you so much more.

*****

A few days later
AmEx Elite Football Performance Centre, Lancing, West Sussex

I'm delighted to be manager of this fine club. I couldn't be happier. I've been part of the coaching setup here for years, and I've lived here even longer. Brighton & Hove Albion is in my blood. It's what I'm made of and what I live for. People are ready to die for this club, and that's what I want my players to understand.

What are your plans for the coming season?

Well, we'll meet for preseason and figure out the look and feel of our squad. Some new boys will come in and others who are here will go, and obviously I won't be discussing any specifics of that here or in public. But it will be much as the same as before, with a few changes to how we approach things. From a bigger perspective, not just getting Domino's and McDonald's off speed dial.

*****

The new look of Brighton & Hove Albion

In just two weeks, new manager Indi Blue has rung in plenty of changes to the squad. Two high-profile loans have been terminated, with Glenn Murray returning to Bournemouth and Sebastian Pocognoli to West Bromwich Albion.

Notable departures include Steve Sidwell to Norwich City on a one-year loan, despite having just signed for the Seagulls in June; Henrik Bjørdal to Charlton Athletic for £650,000; and Jamie Murphy to Queens Park Rangers for £1.2 million.

But perhaps the most high-profile has been the sale of Brighton's catalyst Anthony Knockaert, the Frenchman joining newly-promoted Pescara in Serie A for £6 million. Israeli duo Beram Kayal and Tomer Hemed have also signed with West Bromwich Albion and Middlesbrough for roughly £2 million each.

Supporters, however, have plenty to cheer. Oliver Norwood has joined from Reading for £3.3 million, while Shane Duffy has swapped Blackburn for West Sussex in a £2.6 million deal. Promising youngster Ryan Woods has also been signed from Brentford for £1.5 million.

Also in the squad now is veteran midfielder Scott Parker, whose £1 million move from Fulham adds steel and experience to a largely youthful squad. Pablo Armero (£4 million) and Moses Odubajo (£3 million) add pace and industry on the flanks after signing from Udinese and Hull City, respectively.

The two most high-profile signings, however, are Vladimir Hernández (£8 million) from Junior and Andre Gray (£6 million) from Burnley. The former is a hot talent who was eager to prove himself in Europe, while the latter put in a transfer request after falling out with Sean Dyche.

With more departures lined up, the manager could strengthen further in both quality and depth. Keep your eyes on this space for more info as we get it.

*****

Tactical revolution at the AmEx

Indi Blue has set tongues wagging by playing a 3-4-3 formation in preseason, with Brighton dominating both possession and goals in the opening days of their training camp in Belgium.

David Stockdale has primarily marshalled a back three of Lewis Dunk, Uwe Hünemeier and Shane Duffy. On the flanks, Moses Odubajo and Pablo Armero offer pace and power, while Rohan Ince and Scott Parker make for a titanic partnership in the middle of the park. Last but not least, a free-scoring front three of Vlad Hernández, Andre Gray and Kazenga LuaLua have been making the most of their tactical freedom to render the graft of the back seven worthwhile.

If the manager takes Brighton into the season with this formation and tastes success, expect it to be the beginning of a tactical revolution in West Sussex.

Re: How's Your FIFA Career Mode Going?

August 2016

EFL CHAMPIONSHIP
Derby 0-4 Brighton

39’ GOAL – Vladimir Hernández gets on a loose ball and fires into the side netting.

43’ GOAL – Kazenga LuaLua finishes Pablo Armero’s cross first-time with his weak foot.

45’+1 GOAL – Andre Gray gets on the end of Hernández’s sublime low cross.

90’+3 GOAL – Manu is put clean through by Gray and makes no mistakes.

Full time. Brighton take all three points with a very convincing performance against a clueless Derby side. The visitors’ strikers were lethal today. More showings like this will justify Indi Blue’s decision to revamp Brighton’s squad so extensively this summer, including the sale of marquee man Anthony Knockaert to Pescara.

Man of the match: Andre Gray (BHA)

***

Lasagna on the menu at Brighton

Brighton have completed the signing of Kevin Lasagna from Carpi for £4 million. The young Italian striker brings pace and athleticism to the Seagulls' attack, and will compete with the likes of Andre Gray and Kazenga LuaLua for a spot in the first team.

***

EFL CUP
Millwall 2-3 Brighton

9’ GOAL – Shaun Williams sends David Stockdale the wrong way with a powerful penalty.

59’ GOAL – Lee Gregory fires with his cannon of a right foot. Stockdale had no chance on that.

63’ GOAL – Kevin Lasagna is put through by Scott Parker and puts it in the bottom corner.

70’ GOAL – Solly March taps in after Lasagna dummies Kazenga LuaLua’s low cross.

88’ GOAL – Elvis Manu walks it in after Lasagna squares to him with the keeper committed.

Full time. After going 2-0 down, Brighton mounted a ferocious comeback to beat Millwall and move to the next round of the cup. The visitors need to play with this sort of intensity and tempo from minute one if they want to go far this season. Do that, and you never know about that trip to Wembley.

Man of the match: Kevin Lasagna (BHA)

***

EFL CHAMPIONSHIP
Brighton 1-1 N. Forest

37’ GOAL – Vladimir Hernández scoops Andre Gray’s pass over the onrushing keeper.

41’ GOAL – Patjim Kasami capitalises on Lewis Dunk’s injury to score from close range.

Full time. Brighton and Nottingham Forest share the spoils in a relatively even contest. The hosts will feel aggrieved – rightly so – at the referee’s decision to allow play to go on while Lewis Dunk was lying in the box with what proved to be a minor ankle injury. Otherwise, there was little to separate both sides.

Man of the match: Shane Duffy (BHA)

***

EFL CHAMPIONSHIP
Brighton 3-0 Rotherham

18’ GOAL – Vladimir Hernández turns in the box to lose his marker and drive a shot home.

44’ GOAL – Kazenga LuaLua shoots from an improbable angle. It goes in off the post.

84’ GOAL – LuaLua taps in after Andre Gray’s shot falls kindly at his feet.

Full time. Brighton return to winning ways to go top of the Championship with another clean sheet. It was a thorough performance, with Rotherham unable to match Brighton’s intensity in any part of the game.

Man of the match: Vladimir Hernández (BHA)

***

EFL CHAMPIONSHIP
Reading 0-5 Brighton

16’ GOAL – Andre Gray dribbles his way forward, firing an unstoppable shot past Ali al-Habsi.

19’ GOAL – Gray coolly dispatches a penalty awarded for Liam Moore’s foul on Ryan Woods.

56’ GOAL – Gray completes his hat-trick with a chip over al-Habsi from Hernández’s cross.

77’ GOAL – Kazenga LuaLua shows up at the right time to poke in Gray’s low cross.

83’ GOAL – Vladimir Hernandez hits the side netting after being put through by Woods.

Full time. Brighton continue to impress, this time with a victory of considerable magnitude over Reading. The goal glut comes on the back of a slight formation change from 3-4-3 to 3-4-1-2, with Andre Gray benefitting hugely from having a central strike partner.

Man of the match: Andre Gray (BHA)

***

Parker injury forces Brighton's hand

Scott Parker’s injury has forced Indi Blue to reconsider his squad revamp at Brighton & Hove Albion. The former Chelsea and Tottenham midfielder sustained a fractured tibia in the 5-0 win at Reading, ruling him out of training and first-team action for 12 weeks.

Brighton have been linked in recent days with Burnley and England goalkeeper Tom Heaton, with Indi reportedly unconvinced of David Stockdale’s capabilities as a long-term solution. However, with most of the club’s transfer funds already spent on several high-profile signings, Parker’s injury forced Indi and Brighton to re-think their strategy.

One option would have been to sign cover for Parker on loan, but at the age of 35, such an injury can have a permanent impact on form and fitness. Any loan signing would have to be replaced at the end of the season, compromising the long-term consistency of the squad.

It looks now like Brighton will pursue a dynamic midfielder rather than enhancing their capabilities in goal. The club have been linked with the likes of Tongo Doumbia of Ligue 1 side Toulouse, Oupa Manyisa of Orlando Pirates in South Africa, and Emmanuel Badu of Udinese, from whom Brighton have already signed Pablo Armero this summer.

***

EFL CUP
Brighton 0-1 Bolton

35’ GOAL – Gary Madine

Full time. Brighton have been knocked out of the EFL Cup by third division leaders Bolton, who are also undefeated in the league. While not ideal from a competitive perspective, the exit from this competition will allow Indi Blue to focus on the league.

Man of the match: Gary Madine (BOL)

***

Brighton sign marquee man on deadline day

Brighton have completed a deal with Udinese for Emmanuel Badu, signing the Ghanaian for £5 million on deadline day and adding a new level of dynamic athleticism to their midfield. Trent Alexander-Arnold also joins the Seagulls in a £1 million deal, swapping Liverpool for West Sussex. A versatile player, he is expected to provide cover across midfield and defence.

Dale Stephens, whose contract with Brighton was due to expire in 2017, has signed for Aston Villa in a deal worth £2.2 million. The talented Englishman featured extensively last season as Brighton, but has found it difficult to break into Indi Blue’s team. Jiří Skalák has also moved on, to Blackburn Rovers for £1.2 million.

Liam Rosenior, meanwhile, has been ordered to train away from the first team after turning down a £1.4 million transfer to Burton Albion. The former Hull City and Reading defender has reportedly chosen to see out his current contract with Brighton rather than take a pay cut and play regular football.

The biggest deal of deadline day remains Raphaël Varane’s £47 million transfer from Real Madrid to Chelsea.

Subs: Mäenpää, Goldson, Bong, Norwood, Woods, Lasagna, Manu

Re: How's Your FIFA Career Mode Going?

Indi - Good to have you and good ol' Brighton back! You made some impressive signings with especially Badu and Gray catching my eye. Results went your way, too, apart from that cup game against Bolton. As you said, you will be able to focus on the league, though. Judging by your results so far getting automatic promotion shouldn't be too difficult of a task.

Cabee - Yay, Exeter is back! I'm really looking forward to see where you and the team will be in 10 seasons! August was a so-so month for you, but it is still very early into the season. Also, I absolutely love the way your updates look and all the graphics you use! How do you create them?

Rabbit - Newport: I was shocked to see that you sold Saint-Maximin but I also understand why that happened. It's good to see that Ringdal Stövland has been able to step up and become an important piece of your attack now. Pogba has also been very good for you, but what about your other marquee signing, Kurt Zouma? How has he been? I was also wondering, do you have any plans for Farfan's replacement as he is getting older? Great job with Hungary, too!

Twente: Lopez looks like a very good signing, but at the same time and I'm surprised that you didn't sign any top-class strikers to play next to Veldwijk. Is there any reason for this? You have gotten off to a very good start in the league, and hopefully you will be able to keep the form up. Very good performances in the Champions League, too, where your group really is a group of death.

Aquaman - Good to have you back! I'm looking forward to your new career! QPR are quite an interesting side with their recent history of a millionaire owner.

Tex - You were able to get some good results in November, but you had quite some scoring issues in the majority of the games in that month. However, all that matters is the result and you are in a very good position in the league. Do you have any plans for the January transfer window which is quite near? Also, that is one adorable puppy!

Terp - Strong results with Newcastle, although getting knocked out of the cup by Charlton is, as you said, disappointing. On the bright side, you will be able to focus on winning the league by a large margin.

SMH - I'm looking forward to your Clermont career as it is a fairly unknown team. The attackers of the team seem quite poor, though, and I'd expect you to work on that. Good luck!

Keano - I have no clue whether I touched on your updates previously, but whatever :P All of your games seemed to be very even, which only makes playing the game more enjoyable. Well done to get that double win over Arsenal! Hopefully you find time to keep your updates coming.

---

I think that's everyone. I'm very sorry if I missed someone!
