Dagenham - '13-'14 season
December update

Eight games. Two wins. Yup, Our team finally dropped in performance during a difficult month.

Vs. Moracambe: 1-1 Draw. The result is reflective of a game that was very even throughout.
Vs. Crawley Town (F.A. Cup): 0-2 Loss. One of those games where you are much better than your opponent but they are able to score and you aren't. Dagenham has now been eliminated from all cup competitions this season and this game marked the team's first defeat since September 4th when it faced Manchester City in the Capital One Cup. This marks the end of the team's 15-game undefeated streak (10 wins, 5 draws).
@ Mansfield Town: 1-1 Draw. This was probably a sign of things to come as the team was not able to beat the league's last place team.
Vs. Bristol Rovers: 3-0 Win. A nice bounce back win to go into the second half of the month with some momentum.
@ Chesterfield: 1-1 Draw. One of the contending teams in League 2 went punch by punch against the league leaders so this was a fair result.
Vs. Southend United 0-1 Loss. This was a loss that we could simply not afford. As it's often the case we had plenty of shots on goal but unfortunately on this one none reached the net.
@ Rochdale: 1-0 Win. We were able to get the 3 points thanks to a correctly called foul in the box, but this marked the second consecutive game in which we failed to find the back of the next during regular play.
Vs. Portsmouth: 1-2 Loss. Both teams went into this game tied for the league lead and the visitors gained some revenge on last month's loss at home with a well deserved victory.

After all of that, here are the standings as of January 2014 through 25 games.

Football League 2 Standings
1. Portsmouth - 51pts
2. S****horpe Utd - 49pts
3. Dagenham - 48pts
4. Chesterfield - 48pts
5. Bury - 43pts
6. Plymouth Argyle - 41pts
7. Southend United

You know how I mentioned in the last update that we had some limited depth? This is how bad it was: when I went to play the very next game I was told that the team didn't have enough fit players and as such I may need to forfeit the game vs Moracambe. I had to recall Louis Dennis from his loan at Colchester United. Did I also mention I have no money? I had to find the right distribution between transfer budget and wage budget so I could sign one more prospect to the YA and I'm now near empty on the funds.

We're in financial crisis. I'm in a position where I need to sell my best players just so I can have funds. The problems is that I can't sell anyone without acquiring someone first to avoid having to forfeit any games. When pushing all of my budget towards wages all I have is $877, so my only option is to loan someone making $750. Luckily I do have a target in mind: Mark Birighitti, GK from Newcastle Jets who was on short loan with us earlier this season. He fits what I need budget wise and on the field as the 19-year old Jordan Seabright is nothing but a liability. I have received a $400K offer for Rhys Murphy, who leads the league with 8 assists, from Burnley and I have countered for $500K. I have also transfer listed Zavon Hines who has a value of $600K and I hope to sell for closer to $1 million. He expressed some disappointment with the news. I understand this moves may affect me as I pursue promotion to League 1 but I feel like I have other players on the roster that can step up. It's a risk worth taking because I do want to move on to League 1 but I also want to assemble a team that will be able to compete for promotion to the Championship as well as in all the cups.

The Youth Academy now has 6 members, listed below:

- Jamie Black (GK, 47-51 OVR, 73-81 POT): An intriguing 16 Y/O prospect from Scotland who stands at 6'7", 194lbs.
- Jordan Derbyshire (GK, 50-56, 79-89): This 16 Y/O kid from England is arguably the better GK prospect. He's 6 inches shorter than Black.
- Xabi Lopez (DEF, 43-47, 69-77): 15 Y/O kid from Spain still trying to figure what his position is on the back end. First impression is CB.
- Keith Carey (ATT, 41-47, 70-82): This 16 Y/O from Scotland is now expected to be an attacker.
- Fabian Torres (MID, 44-52, 70-82): This 16 Y/O from Spain is likely to be a CAM.
- Kagetoki Miyoshi (DEF/MID, 39-49, 73-93)*: This 15 Y/O kid from Japan immediately becomes one of the most intriguing prospects on the team.
* Denotes recent addition to the Y.A.

Jerome Stones from England has now found our top 2 prospects. I think if I can get through this season without any more major problems some of those prospects may be able to become contributors next season. I don't necessarily want to promote anyone unless they can be a starter so I'm eagerly looking towards the May update.

Chesterfield is always difficult to beat as well as Portsmouth, so the bright side is you were to get 4 out of 6 points in those two matches. Mansfield isn't too dangerous up front, but their defense is solid. That's how I discovered Ryan Tafazolli.

I hear you on the money problems. That's why I always sent my best players to the cup games (especially FA cup) even if my alternative squad would lose points in the league, winning an FA cup fixture has a good pay for lower league squads. I don't remember any update on the J. Paint Trophy. How did you do there?

This is a 1-star team.

Still need to post my squad average. Hope to do it tonight as well as the end of month and transfer window update. Looking at your squad that GK position is definitely the weak point. About your squad depth, does your formation go well with the amount of players you have? For example, if you have a lot of CBs, try a line of 5. That could also help keep danger away from your GK. If you have a lot of center midfielders, then use the narrow version of the 4-1-2-1-2. You could also check out formations with just 1 striker so you could rotate Murphy and Scott. That could solve any fitness issues up front as they should both be well rested by the time they need to rotate. Just trying to help out here, but either way you're doing a great job with Dagenham! Now that your cup runs are over, you can focus on the league which you're already in an auto promotion spot.
