Match 1
United States - Chile (1-2)
Zardes '44 (P)
Alexis '60
Vidal '74
Recap: I must admit I would had preferred if my first game with the USMNT was a friendly. While figuring out how these guys play we jumped out to a lead on a correct penalty call but Chile had been attacking more effectively. They continued to bring the heat in the second half and their stars come through to hand us a defeat in our first game of the tourney.
Match 2
United States - Argentina (3-1)
Zardes '20 (P)
Correa '45
Yedlin '60
Salgado '74
Recap: We went into this game knowing we had to at least come away with a point and our determination showed from the get-go, we were the team bringing the heat early on and once again jumped out to a lead on a PK. Of course out of all the Argentinian stars it to be the one I coach at Alcorcon that would tie the game, but my guys didn't change their approach in the second half and stunned the Argentinians on a huge second half by Yedlin who also assisted on the Salgado goal.
Match 3
Venezuela - United States (1-3)
Kitchen '7
Bradley '26
Aristeguieta '71
Altidore '85
Recap: As soon as the group was announced I made sure to let my guys know this game meant a lot for me and I reminded them again before they took the pitch. They didn't let me down, never mind that we couldn't lose this game if we wanted to move on and we had a chance at 1st place in the group. We dominated my former squad from beginning to end. Unfortunately Chile got a point out of Argentina in the other match so we had to settle for 2nd place in the group.
Here is how all 3 groups ended.
Group A
Chile - 7pts
United States - 6pts
Argentina - 4pts
Venezuela - 0pts
Group B
Brazil - 7pts
Ecuador - 4pts
Mexico - 3pts
Peru - 2pts
Group C
Uruguay - 5pts
Colombia - 4pts
Bolivia - 4pts
Paraguay - 3pts

Quarter Finals
United States - Colombia (2-1)
James '43
Zardes '73
Salgado '76
Recap: In a game where we were producing more opportunities than our opponents it was the best player on the pitch who put Colombia ahead with a beautiful, and I mean GORGEOUS, free kick from about 30 yards out on the right side that kissed the right post as it went in. I didn't wait too long in the second half to move to a 3-4-3 which once again paid off. It was an onslaught of attacking by our guys and a chip pass from Bradley led to a nice volley by Zardes to tie the game. Before we could figure out whether we wanted to go back to a 4-4-2 diamond Lade crossed a nice pass from the left wing that Salgado put away with a header. And on to the semi finals it is.
Semi Finals
Chile - United States (0-0, 4-5 PK's)
Recap: Either way this was going to be a rematch as somehow Chile and Argentina were matched up for the quarter finals where the Chileans eliminated the Argentinians in PK's after a 1-1 draw. Although both teams created several opportunities in this one neither could find the back of the net so it was back to PK's for Chile which I thought might give them an advantage. WRONG. My guys executed their turns perfectly while Sean Johnson saved Alexis' kick (Chile's 4th) and Gil put away our 5th kick with a cold-blooded chip down the middle.
Final
United States - Brazil (1-4)
Salgado '3
Oscar '10
Lucas '40
Adryan '45
Coutinho '85
Recap: Welp. We surprised everyone when Yedlin streamed down the right wing and crossed an air ball into the box that Salgado put away in an upper corner, but the joy wouldn't stay for long as Oscar scored on a ridiculous shot from 35 yards out that also went in an upper corner then Brazil continued to dominate from there. Lucas got past a couple of defenders in the box and put one away past Johnson's side, then Adryan scored at the end of the half on a header off a corner kick which I almost never give up. Of course, I went to a 3-4-3 in the second half which created more chances but Coutinho finalized a killer counter to put this game away and give the host country to cup. Congrats to Brazil. At the same time very proud of my guys who had a hell of a run!

Alright, now back to Alcorcon.
As previously mentioned Nicola Lancini (73 OVR), who arrived on pre-contract signed last winter, will become our starting LB right away. He's rated the same as Adama Traore but is 5 years younger and has outstanding pace and stamina which is what I look for out of my fullbacks. We also decided we wanted to upgrade at CDM in addition to looking for a striker to eventually take over after Rondon retires at the end of this upcoming season.
TRANSFERS OUT:
Adama Traore (LB, 73 OVR), sold to RCD Espanyol for $1.6 million.
Tomas Rincon (CDM, 75 OVR), included as part of a deal in which we acquired a player.
TRANSFERS IN:
Andre Hoffman (CDM, 78 OVR), purchased from Hannover 96 for $6.5 million + Rincon.
I got exactly what I wanted in Hoffman who is a better player than Rincon and 5 years younger. He's also 5 inches taller which is always welcomed in the air game. Of course he's a great defender and I'm really excited about him solidifying that position for us. After these transactions we still have just under $10 million in transfer budget to go with just over $100K in wage budget and we're working on acquiring a new striker. Our #1 target is a 26-year old Frenchman who is left footed and 6'3" tall.
We have now wrapped up our pre-season games which went as follows:
AD Alcorcon - Milan (1-1)
Balotelli '83
Yamura '86
Recap: Positive for us is that this was a very evenly matched game throughout. Balotelli came in as a sub in the second half and put away a loose ball near the end of the game but Yamura matched his effort, also putting away a loose ball a few minutes later.
Atalanta - AD Alcorcon (1-0)
Abruzzese '6
Recap: Not too upset about the result as Atalanta's goal was a nice header off a corner and we otherwise played a very even game. This was also mostly the B team.
AD Alcorcon - VfB Stuttgart (3-1)
Imada '27
Akpom '45
Gorter '60
Beric '72
Recap: Of course that it was the game where I started my lowest rated guys where we actually came away with a convincing victory. Imada did not waste his opportunity to get noticed by not only scoring a nice goal but also assisting on Akpom's score. He's someone to keep an eye on even if he's our lowest rated striker at the moment.
All that being said, the next update will come at the end of August at which point we will have played against Barca and Getafe in league play, against Legia Warszawa twice in Champions League qualifying, and Barca again in the Spanish Super Cup. We will also have wrapped up the summer transfer window ... will we bring in a new striker? That update will also bring back our academy report, where for now all you need to know is the youth squad consists of only 5 players and all of our scouts have been sent out on 3-month trips:
Andre Osorio, Canada (5-star EXP & JUD): Sent to France to look for wingers.
Andres Ramos, Spain (4-star EXP, 3-star JUD): Sent to Spain to look for attackers.
Christian Lamanna, Italy (4-star EXP, 5-star JUD): Sent to England to look for wingers.
Wish me luck!
