SAG/AFTRA is the union that represents actors and performers of any kind. Nowadays that covers pretty much everyone because so many people do crossover projects. A recording artist could end up in a skit on Saturday Night Live, a studio and therefore union show, and all of a sudden they need to be in the union to "act" for three minutes.

When they wrote up their last contracts in the 90s, the gaming industry wasn't by any means new but it wasn't as developed as today because there was no voicework to be done and whatever WAS done ("Finish him", "bladesh of shteel!"), was usually done in-house by the studio's designers. So, the union and its performers in the gaming world have basically gone on strike to protest things they want dealt with if they'll continue to participate in games.

Primarily they want:
1. transparency with projects they're working on so it's not just, "here, read this stuff, we'll use it however we want" and more importantly
2. residuals on games.
Keely Hawes got her flat fee for the Tomb Raider series in the early 2000s. But those games (Anniversary, Underground, Legend) made much much more money than what she was paid and she'd have made more if there were residuals. Personally, I think that's wrong. Not everyone is Nolan North and can command a massive salary from the start. This is the main reason there are few big names in voice work in games. Sure, there are some but they basically command a very high salary when they do it and often do it because they like it.
So, while I don't know this for sure, I can only imagine that the argument from play by play guys is this...
- Our voice is what "makes" the game authentic
- Our voice is also our day job where we call real games not fake ones
- Without our voice, our lawyers tell us there is strong evidence to show the game wouldn't do as well
- Our primary employer, the NHL, MLB, NBA, etc etc and local stations need us all the time for our skills.
If we're gonna spend weeks in a sound booth, we wanna make sure we're gonna make a percentage off the sale of every disc and download.

One more thing... worse than the names issue in NHL is the lack of faces for rookies. I can understand William Nylander's face not being real in 2015 when he started as a rookie, but last year and DEFINITELY this year, his face should be there. It's ridiculous. I've been playing a lot of older titles lately and honestly, there are so many communities for older games that update what were far better games with modern rosters and teams that I'm finding it very hard to justify paying for the weak efforts by those same studios today, including EA.

Same Story , my last one was NHL 16. I didn't even bought NHL 17 when it was on sale for under 20. I stick with MLB the show and maybe fifa when it is on sale for under 20.

Fixed that real quick.

Honestly, the faces in this game are just incredibly behind the times. I can call up a prospect in MLB The Show and find that he looks at least 80% close to his actual self.

Meanwhile, in NHL17 I was missing faces for Parayko, Edmundson, Bortuzzo, Gunnarsson, Jaskin, Brodziak, Upshall...uh, let's see...going off memory here, but I feel like there were a few others.

I don't understand how this company hasn't either stepped up their efforts to make better faces, or given the people who own the game the keys...because right now the majority of the league just looks bad.
