How to stop CPU running into walls?

I'm having a problem that I used to have in NHL18, where CPU players take an angle directly at the end boards and collide with it while retrieving a puck (this is after a dump or icing it). Does anyone know what sliders or settings would impact this?
The current workaround is to switch control to any player who is heading to the boards and try to put them on a better angle. This doesn't work if you can't switch in time to "save" that player, and is exhausting and not fun.
If anyone has suggestions on how I can prevent this please please please let me know. Maybe sticking with base tuner is the thing to do?
