I like a lot of NY-bases rappers who reached fame in the 90s; it just bugs me when people say the new school stuff is not "real" hip-hop.
I feel you and I definately respect your post and you do have some very valid points. I'm 36 so I'm one of those old heads who was bred and born in NY. I don't knock the kids doin their thing nowadys b/c they could be out trying to tap my pockets but I also understand what they're doing isn't meant for me.

They have their own movements going on and I'm all for it. As far the "real hip hop" thing one thing you have to understand is (and I don't know how you old you are) before the game blew up you really had to have skills to get on. We came up on deep lyrical content. Half of these dudes (NY included) probably wouldn't have made the cut with a Rakim, G Rap, KRS, Cube or Kane in their prime.

Again this is no knock b/c I understand the game is in different place now and there isn't a premium placed on lyrics.

I don't know how many of you guys listen to A$AP Rocky (I myself don't) but I have mad respect for this dude. I hope he does well in his career. Check out the vids of him meeting his namesake The God Rakim...

I thought by dressing like a nerd he meant wearing clothes that fit you lol

I'm just comparing it to the style before what's going on now.

I agree skinnies are ridiculous, they're fading away though, outside of the kids in high school of course.

I respect your post and agree with the opinion but you also have to consider that Hip Hop is young (early 70's) and the lyrical part of Rap didnt catch on until the late 80's and in the 90's....Thats only as decade...Def not enough to define a genre...We had a golden era, thats it..

Hip hop/rap was never about lyrics..Dudes were saying jibberish, toasting and saying repeatitive chants from the start...Thats how it got the name "rap"

Valid point about lyricism and more notably a point I never even entertained so props to you for that. I can only speak for myself (I gave up championing for my era long ago) but while I've listened to hip hop pretty much since day one, lyrics are what really drew me deeper into the game. Once I started paying attetion to what was being said I was hooked for life. That's one thing I miss is the elevation lyrically. Most of the cats out here are talking about the same things.

And while early Hip Hop was about party ryhmes I wouldnt call what they were spittin jibberish. Cold Crush, Treacherous 3 & Furious 5 kicked decent stuff for those days. Especially Cold Crush with their routines...crazy.

Me being a former MC deosn't help matters much either as I'm extra hard on everybody and very critical. I have very high standands.

If I have any beef with the new generation, it's that most don't know (or don't care) about the history or the cats that came before them and that's so disrespectful to quote SAS. Forget the fact NY gets disrepected @ times (granted we as a city bring a lot of that on ourselves) and it just turns me off sometimes. That's the main reason I wanted to share the A$AP vids with y'all and anyone I can because it was really to cool to see him flip out (as he should've) from meeting the man he was named after. I can @ least respect him more b/c I know he has some sense of history.

I'm a firm believer in knowing your craft whatever it is. Whether you spit, hoop or you're an actor, you should be a student of the game.
